Abstract

Introduction: Declining the rates of smoking among the poor still becomes a challenge for the health sector. Ideally, they can use the money for smoking to pay for their family health insurance premium. This research aimed to analyze how the poor in the informal sector perceived the payment of National Health Insurance (NHI/ JKN) using the cigarette cost. Methods: Data were collected from focus group discussions (FGD) in three different locations, Deli Serdang, Sumedang Districts and Medan City. Thirty-three informal sector workers with low financial capabilities participated in these FGDs. Health Belief Model was used as the framework for analyzing the data and information. Data analysis was conducted through the content analysis method. Results: The finding showed that poor people who work in the informal sector gave two different responses regarding the use of cigarette costs for paying the NHI/JKN program premium. The respondents had already an excellent perceived susceptibility and severity both on smoking habits and their low finance condition. They believed that the NHI/JKN benefit was to protect them financially if their family members need medical treatment. However, they had low self-efficacy and high perceived barriers that hinder them from replacing the money for buying cigarettes into paying for NHI/JKN premium. Conclusion: An approach to the poor people in the informal sector within their local context, is urgently needed to increase their health insurance literacy and knowledge about smoking.

Abstract

The use and availability of social media have grown exponentially, providing new opportunities to support smoking cessation efforts. Social media encompasses various interactive platforms, enabling individuals and communities to exchange information within a virtual network. This study aims to identify discourses related to smoking cessation encouragement among Indonesian people in social media. To collect data on social media, particularly Twitter, the researchers used Netlytic as a tool and limited the keyword to "rokok" in the Indonesian language. Content analysis was used to analyse collected tweets and identify themes related to smoking. Social network analysis was also conducted to identify actors and relationship between actors. The study found that discourse around smoking can either support smoking cessation intervention, normalise smoking and cigarettes, which may not support cessation efforts, or be neutral. Themes that support smoking cessation efforts include sharing experiences as a second-hand smoker, discomfort having a smoking partner, family members' sickness due to smoking, and reporting health disadvantages of smoking. Besides, smoking was normalised, and its devastating health effects were neglected since people saw smoking as a "teman ngopi". Smoking cessation campaigns on social media can use relevant threads on Twitter to make them more relatable to encourage smoking cessation.

Abstract

The prevalence of HIV in Indonesia is increasing, particularly among certain regions and married women. Such disparities have a significant impact on regional development. Knowledge of HIV and the ability to negotiate sexual relationships with their spouses can help prevent the spread of HIV in the population. This study aims to compare the HIV knowledge, stigma, sexual relationship negotiation, and attitudes toward negotiating safer sexual relationships of Indonesian married women in high and low HIV prevalence areas (Papua and West Sulawesi). Percentages, t-tests, and logistic regression were conducted using the 2017 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS) to analyze the differences between the two regions. The study found that HIV knowledge and negotiating skills differed between the two regions. Married women in the region with the highest HIV prevalence had better HIV knowledge but lower ability to negotiate sexual relationships with their husbands compared to married women living in the lowest HIV prevalence. The differences in HIV knowledge and ability to negotiate sexual relationships may be linked to gender disparities as well as efforts to prevent HIV transmission in the regions. Further studies are needed to explore the experiences and perspectives of married women in negotiating sexual relationships to develop more effective strategies to prevent HIV transmission in this population group.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought additional stressors to Indonesian family farms, which are already subject to drought, flood, landslide, pest attack, and market price fluctuations. This study aims to analyse family farms’ resilience to the stressors caused by the COVID-19 pandemic using Henry’s family resilience model. Applying a qualitative approach, this study collected data using focus group discussions in two villages in East Java and a village in Center Java. The data was analysed using thematic analysis. We discovered that stressors related to the COVID-19 pandemic are lower demand on agricultural products and lower income among farmers. Organic and conventional farmers have different protection and vulnerability factors. Organic farmers are able to reach buyers directly using social media amid COVID-19 restrictions while conventional farmers still rely on sales through middlemen. The adaptive process of farming families is influenced by social psychological factors within the family such as meaning, emotion, control, and maintenance systems. This study suggests that family farmers have to be empowered in terms of their innovative production in current stressors and increase their access to the market as a priority for agricultural extension programmes.
