Abstract

Facial makeup is a form of visual art used to enhance and perfect the appearance of the face through the use of cosmetics and specific application techniques. A crucial stage in this process is achieving the desired complexion, which can be done using either the underpainting technique or the conventional technique. This study focuses on comparing the complexion results obtained from the underpainting technique versus the conventional technique when applied to Koto Gadang brides. An experimental method employing a post-test-only control group design was used, involving two groups and six models with normal skin types; each application was evaluated by seven panelists. The aspects assessed included the flawless quality of the complexion, the correct placement of contour and blush, and the makeup's durability. Data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normality, Levene’s Test for homogeneity, and the Independent Samples T-Test for hypothesis testing. The results indicate that: 1) there is a significant difference in complexion outcomes between the two techniques regarding the "flawless complexion" indicator, whereas no significant differences were found regarding contour and blush placement or durability; and 2) the application of the underpainting technique regarding the flawless complexion aspect yielded a calculated t-value of 2.268 with a significance level of 0.043 (p < 0.05), demonstrating a significant difference in the complexion results for Koto Gadang brides.
