Abstract

Sasi, a customary resource management system practiced by the people of Eastern Indonesia, has been largely understood as a conservation instrument, while its contribution as a cultural ecosystem service and regulation for community-based ecotourism has not been critically synthesized. This study aims to identify and synthesize scientific literature on the dual role of Sasi as a cultural ecosystem service and regulation, and its relevance to ecotourism development in Menarbu Village, West Papua. The study used a Systematic Literature Review method referring to the PRISMA 2020 protocol, with searches on Google Scholar, Garuda, Scopus, and ScienceDirect, filtering 1,855 records to 15 eligible studies published between 2015 and 2026. The synthesis shows that Sasi functions as a regulation service through limiting harvest time and space that supports habitat restoration, while its cultural functions, strengthening identity, ritual, and social cohesion, are highly dependent on the continuity of institutions that are still fragile in newly formalized systems such as in Menarbu. The interaction of these two functions shows more tension than synergy once tourism enters the system. This study concludes that Menarbu is an empirically under-researched case, where the resilience of its dual function has not been tested under the pressure of sustainable tourism.
