Abstract

Noun phrase is used when a single word is not enough to describe a noun. Ambiguity and mistranslation might happen in noun phrase translation that needs different structure depending on two languages. This research has purposes to find out the translation shifts that occur on noun phrase in Instagram caption translation, to reveal the translation techniques applied in translating noun phrase from ST to the TT and to assess the translation accuracy of noun phrase in TT from the ST. The theories used in this research are Catford’s theory of translation shift, Molina and Albir’s theory of translation technique, and translation accuracy in Nababan et al TQA (Translation Quality Assessment). This research is descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research are 125 noun phrases from Instagram caption and their translation into Indonesian. Questionnaire is also distributed to three raters as the data of this research. The analysis shows that there are six kinds of translation shift in translating the data; intra-system shift is 32% (40 data), structure shift is 22.4% (28 data), unit shift is 20% (25 data), level shift is 9.6% (12 data), none shift is 8.8% (11 data), and class shift is 7.2% (9 data). There are 9 translation techniques used; literal translation is 42.40% (53 data), borrowing technique is 20.80% (26 data), establish equivalent is 16.80% (21 data), calque is 7.20% (9 data), discursive creation and reduction each are 4.80% (6 data), linguistic compression is 1.60% (2 data), and linguistic amplification and transposition each are 0.80% (1 datum). In term of translation accuracy, 66 data are accurate with 58.20%, 27 data are less accurate with 21.60%, and 32 data are inaccurate with 25.60%. Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the kinds of offenses motivating the characters to express apologies in the film entitled “Princess Diaries 2”, to know how the characters express their apologies and  to reveal why the characters use the ways to express apologies as a politeness strategy. The phenomena of verbal (words or utterances), non-verbal actions supporting apologies and intonation in apologizing expressed by the characters in the film entitled “Princess Diaries 2” are taken as the samples. There are six kinds of offences found in the film “Princess Diaries 2” that motivate the characters to express apologies. They are deception, infringement on possession, infringements on talk, instances of inconvenience, social behavior offences, and infringement on time. The addresser performs apologies with simple or complex form. The apology strategies appearing in the data are direct apology (expression of regret and request of forgiveness), acknowledgment, expression of lack of intend, self-deficiency and expression of embarrassment, giving explanation or account, minimizing the degree of the offence, expression of  concern to the offended, promise of forbearance and offer of repair. Furthermore, the addressers also express their apology with direct or indirect apology. Apology can also be perceived as positive politeness strategy since there is an expression of concern to the offended. Tone of voice and facial expression also support the performance of the act of apologizing expressed by the characters. Keywords: apologies, politeness, sociopragmatic

Abstract

Hyperbole employs a sharp-witter arrangement of words, images or meanings, meant to produce a specific effect on an audience. This paper focuses on hyperbole in television advertisement. The aims is to know the kinds of hyperbole used in television advertisement and to discuss the purposes of using hyperboles in television advertisement. This research uses descriptive method which involves the following steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data.This study presents only two types of hyperbole. Referential equivalent method is used to determine the kinds of hyperboles in television advertisement. Meanwhile, pragmatic equivalent method is used to analyze the purpose of of using hyperboles in television advertisement. The first is visual hyperbole and the second is verbal hyperbole. The purposes of using hyperboles in television advertisement are to exaggerate the ideas that need stress, to add an amusing effect in the text, and to grab the attention or to attract the customer. Abstract

This research is entitled "Analysis of Politeness Strategies in Directive Speech in Mission:Impossible - Fallout". The purpose of this research is to find out the utterance that tellssomeone and contains elements of politeness strategies. The object of this research isMission: Impossible – Fallout. It is a 2018 American spy film directed by ChristopherMcQuarrie. In this study, the method used is descriptive qualitative because the researcherwill examine and interpret the data. The data found is in the form of a dialog. The step to getdata is to collect data sources from subtitles. After that, the researcher reads, selects, andanalyzes dialogues containing politeness strategies in directive speech. The results of thisstudy, researchers found 70 data. Then, from 70 data, there are 2 types of politenessstrategies, namely positive politeness, and negative politeness. Positive politeness is found in8 data, negative politeness is found in 62 data. Abstract

The research entitled “An Analysis of Lexical and Contextual Meaning in Lewis Capaldi’sSong Lyrics”. This research aimed to find out the lexical and contextual meanings,describing both meanings in each data, and classifying the types of context that are found ineach data. There were three songs as the object of the research taken from DivinelyUninspired to a Hellish Extent’s album entitled “Leaving my Love Behind, Lost on You andHold Me While you Wait”. This research used the descriptive qualitative method since theresearcher analyzed and interpret Lewis Capaldi’s song lyrics. Mansoer Pateda’s theoriesare used in this research. The data were found in the form of words and phrases which havelexical and contextual meaning in song lyrics. The step to obtain the data was collectingsources of data from Lewis Capaldi songs taken from the internet. After that, the researcherread, selected, and listened to the song to understand the context of the song and analyzedthem based on research focuses. As a result of this research, the researcher found 33 datathat had lexical and contextual meaning. Then, from 33 data, there were five types of contextthat are found, such as mood context, situational context, purpose context, object context,and context of time. According to the results found, the situational context is the dominant inthis study since it shows someone's situation about his relationship.Keywords: semantics, lexical meaning, contextual meaning, Lewis Capaldi
