Abstract

In Indonesia context, the study of Quranic Exegesis has two groups of opposite interpretations: Interpretations that are too based on the outer meaning of the text and interpretations rely more on the inner meaning of the text. Generally speaking, a balanced and moderate interpretation is an interpretation that combines the two meanings. The moderate commentators are those who do not deny the meaning of one from another. The style of interpretation of Shaleh Darat seems to combine the two meanings. This research uses descriptive-analytic method by trying to find the pattern and embodiment of moderate Interpretations in his work, Fayḍ al-Raḥmān. From the study of his work, this study found: 1) Shaleh Darat has a tendency to moderate interpretation of the Qur’an with the characteristics of fairness, balance, and tolerance. 2) His moderate interpretations appear in some verses regarding sharia and mu'amalah fields.

Abstract

Recently, many tafsîr (interpretive) studies in Indonesia have been directed to the works of "children of the nation" in the local-regional level and Indonesian-language tafsîr. Most of Archipelago-nuanced tafsîr nowadays are used as research objects, from thesis level to dissertation. This article will use Tafsîr al-Azhâr Hamka as the object by emphasizing on the locality aspect by using surah Ali ‘Imrân as the sample. Locality can be included in the Adabî-Ijtima‘î style (social). Therefore, as a foundation methodology, the style will be firstly discussed in general. This study uses analytical descriptive by citing Karl Mannheim’s theory of Sociology. The result is that locality is found in Tafsir al-Azhâr in surah Ali ‘Imrân i.e. locality in language and socio-culture. This locality shows that Hamka is a mufasir (interpreter) who always contextualizes important themes inside a verse so that the meaning and message of the verse are easily understood and applied in the real community where Hamka lives in.

Abstract

Factors related to the discrimination of women's rights include religious perspectives that are contaminated by cultural patriarchy, race, social strata, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, and health. Liberation of women's rights can be realized by Islamic organizations which are free from the negative influence of patriarchal culture. These organizations are Nahdatul Ulama 'and Muhammadiyah. The focus of the discussion includes the gender perspective of Nahdatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah. it also want to trace the gender equality perspective of Nahdatul Ulama' and Muhammadiyah. The method used by the writer is in the form of library research. Sources of data are taken from relevant theme raised by the author. The results of research are giving freedom for women to realize their rights and potential both in the public sector and domestic sector.

Abstract

The study of tafsir tartib nuzuli is still quite rare. This study seeks to complete the study. Tafsir tartib nuzuli is still considered “strange” by the majority of Muslims. This study is library research using a descriptive-analysis method. There are at least four mufasirs (interpreters) who use the tafsir method of tartib nuzuli, namely Bayan al-Ma'ani by Abdul Qadir Huwaisy (Iraq: 1880-1978), Al-Tafsir al-Hadith by Muhammad Darwazah (Syria: 1887-1984), Ma'arij al-Tafakkur by Abdurrahman al-Maidani (Syria: 1927-2004), and Fahm al-Qur`an al-Hakim by Muhammad al-Jabiri (Morocco: 1935-2010). Of the four books of nuzuli interpretation, this paper will focus on two books, namely Al-Tafsir al-Hadith and Fahm al-Qur`an al-Hakim. The tafsir method of nuzuli has its own characteristics and contributions compared to other methods of interpretation. Tafsir tartib nuzuli can be an alternative method in portraying the Prophet’s da’wah journey / Islamic transformation from the time of Muhammad's prophethood until his death. Tartib nuzuli interpretation is more related to the chronology of the Prophetic Sirah Nabawiyah (Prophetic Journey) as narrated in the books of Sirah. Studi tentang tafsir tartib nuzuli masih cukup jarang dilakukan. Kajian ini berusaha untuk melengkapi studi tersebut. Tafsir tartib nuzuli dianggap masih ”asing” oleh mayoritas umat Islam. Kajian ini bersifat kepustakaan (library research) dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif-analisis. Setidaknya ada empat mufasir yang menggunakan metode tafsir tartib nuzuli yaitu Bayan al-Ma’ani karya Abdul Qadir Huwaisy (Irak: 1880-1978), Al-Tafsir al-Hadits karya Muhammad Darwazah (Suriah: 1887-1984), Ma’arij al-Tafakkur karya Abdurrahman al-Maidani (Suriah: 1927-2004), dan Fahm al-Qur`an al-Hakim karya Muhammad al-Jabiri (Maroko: 1935-2010). Dari empat kitab tafsir nuzuli tersebut, tulisan ini akan fokus pada dua kitab, yaitu Al-Tafsir al-Hadits dan Fahm al-Qur`an al-Hakim. Metode tafsir nuzuli memiliki ciri khas dan kontribusi tersendiri dibanding metode tafsir lain. Tafsir tartib nuzuli dapat menjadi metode alternatif dalam memotret perjalanan dakwah Nabi/formasi Islam sejak masa kenabian Muhammad sampai wafatnya. Tafsir tartib nuzuli lebih sinkron dengan kronologi Sirah Nabawiyah sebagaimana dinarasikan dalam kitab-kitab sirah.

Abstract

This article examines Tafsīr al-Ibrīz, a Javanese exegetical work of the Quran authored by the traditionalist Muslim scholar Kyai Bisri Musthofa (1915–1977). Adopting a dialogical approach to tafsr literature, the study seeks to explore the intersection between the scriptural text and the sociocultural contexts that the exegete engages with. Written during a period marked by the intensification of Islamic reform and modernization, al-Ibrīz offers valuable historical insights into these dynamics, as well as the exegete’s responses and critiques of contemporary socio-religious challenges in Indonesia. Through a critical-dialectical epistemological framework, the article underscores two significant aspects: the intellectual perspective of the author and the socio-cultural milieu in which the book was produced. Furthermore, it contends that Bisri Musthofa epitomizes a defender of Islamic traditionalism, whose religious authority is articulated through classical Islamic scholarship. His book embodies the responses of traditionalist Muslims to the processes of modernization and rationalization in late 20th-century Indonesia, addressing issues spanning economics, theology, and ethics.[Artikel ini mengkaji Tafsir al-Ibrīz, sebuah karya tafsir al-Qur’an Jawa yang ditulis oleh ulama tradisionalis, Kyai Bisri Musthofa (1915–1977). Dengan menggunakan pendekatan dialogis literatur tafsir, penelitian ini berupaya untuk mengeksplorasi persinggungan antara teks kitab suci dan konteks sosial budaya yang dihadapi oleh penafsir. Ditulis selama periode yang ditandai oleh intensifikasi reformasi dan modernisasi Islam, al-Ibrīz menawarkan wawasan sejarah yang berharga serta tanggapan dan kritik penafsir terhadap tantangan sosial-keagamaan kontemporer di Indonesia. Melalui kerangka epistemologis dialektis-kritis, artikel ini menggarisbawahi dua aspek penting: perspektif intelektual penyusun dan lingkungan sosial-budaya tempat buku tersebut disusun. Lebih jauh, penulis berpendapat bahwa Bisri Musthofa merupakan lambang pembela tradisionalisme Islam, yang otoritas keagamaannya diartikulasikan melalui keilmuan Islam klasik.
