Abstract

AbstractThis experimental research aimed at investigating the effect of Lexical Collocation on students’ reading comprehension achievement. To conduct the research, 72 students were selected as the samples. They were the tenth grade students of science major at SMAN 4 Singaraja. The group of students were given the lottery, and the result showed that the X MIPA 2 was experimental group and X MIPA 3 was the control group. The design used in this research was Post Test Only Control Group Design. The experimental group was given collocation as treatment and the control group was taught by using a conventional teaching method. At the end, both experimental and control groups were given the post test. The post test was a reading comprehension test, consisting of 20 multiple choices. The data obtained by the post test were analysed by using Descriptive and Inferential Statistic Analyses. This study used alternative hyphothesis. The result of t test in which tobserved was  higher than tcritical value 2.03 was 5.14. Based on the result, the null hyphothesis was rejected and the alternative hyphothesis was accepted. The rejected null hyphothesis means that there is significant difference on reading comprehension between the students who were taught by using collocation and who were not.Key words:Lexical Collocation, Conventional teaching reading, Reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research aimed at investigating whether or not the use of Think Talk Write (TTW) strategy has an effect on the writing skill of tenth grade students’ at SMKN 1 Sukasada in writing narrative text. This experimental study was carried out using Non-Equivalent Control Group Design. There were two classes chosen as sample, experimental and control group. The obtained data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The results of data analysis showed that mean score of experimental group (74.82) was higher than control group (71.22). Moreover, result of independent t-test revealed that there was a significant difference on students’ writing skill (Sig.(2-tailed) = 0.008, p < 0.05). These results indicated that Think Talk Write (TTW) strategy gave significant effect on writing skill of tenth grade students at SMKN 1 Sukasada. As conclusion, alternative hypothesis is accepted in which the students from experimental group achieve better than those students from control group. Keywords: Narrative Text, Think Talk Write (TTW) Strategy, Writing Skill

Abstract

Writing is a difficult skill in English; most of English for Foreign Language students tend to make errors in writing. In assisting the learners to successfully acquire writing skill, an analysis of errors is necessary to be conducted. This study aims at identifying the types of grammatical errors on students’ narrative writings and analyzing the causing factors contributing to the students’ errors. Descriptive qualitative design was applied in this study. The subjects of the study were the ninth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sukawati. The data were collected from students’ narrative writings, questionnaires, andinterviews. In analyzing the data, this study applied the theory from Dulay et al. (1982) in identifying the types of errors and for analyzing the contributing factors of the errors this study used Brown’s (2000) theory. The result of the data analysis showed that the most frequent type of grammatical errors committed wasmisformation error (46.50%), followed by omission error (35.56%), addition error (14.74%), and the least one was misordering error (3.19%). Moreover, the sources of errors were dominated by intralingual transfer (35.33%), followed by interlingual transfer (34.50%), and context of learning (30.15%). Related to this findings, this study had similar result with Hamid & Qayyimah’s (2014) and Ma’mun’s (2016) researcheswhich also found misformation and intralingual transfer as the biggest contributing factors to the errors. Therefore, this present study suggests that the teachers have to find a better way in teaching and learning process of writing and students have to practice more vocabulary especially regarding the forms of verbs, so it can minimize the grammatical errors that occur. Keywords:error analysis, grammatical errors, sources of errors, narrative text
