The effect of immersion of heat cured acrylic resin denture base in sungkai leaf extract (peronema canescens Jack) towards porosity and dimensional stability: a laboratory experimental studyIntroduction: Heat cured acrylic resin is one of the commonly used denture base materials; however, it has disadvantages such as porosity and water absorption, which may affect its dimensional stability. The use of denture disinfectants is necessary during treatment. An alternative disinfectant that can be used is sungkai leaf extract, as it contains tannins and flavonoids. The aim of this study was to analyze the differences in effect of immersing heat-cured acrylic resin denture bases in sungkai leaf extract at concentrations of 30%, 35%, and 40% on denture porosity and dimensional stability. Methods: The design of this study was laboratory experimental with 40 samples, each measuring 65x10x2.5 mm. The samples were divided into four groups: a control group and three groups immersed in sungkai leaf extract at concentrations of 30%, 35%, and 40%. The immersion period lasted for 2 days 12 hours 50 minutes. Data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA and Least Significant Difference (LSD) tests. Results: The mean porosity of the heat-cured acrylic resin denture base after immersion in sungkai leaf extract at 30%, 35%, and 40% concentrations were 0.4767±0.05358%; 0.6222±0.0358%; 0.7830±0.0432%. Similarly, the mean dimensional stability of the denture base after immersion in sungkai leaf extract at the same concentrations were 0.3748 ± 0.0181 mg/cm2; 0.5213±0.0379 mg/cm2; 0.6736±0.0398 mg/cm2, respectively. The one-way ANOVA test yielded a significance value of p=0.0001 (p<0.05), indicating that immersion in sungkai leaf extract at these concentrations significantly affected the porosity and dimensional stability of the heat-cured acrylic resin denture base. Conclusion: There was a significant difference in the effect of sungkai leaf extract immersion on increased porosity and decreased dimensional stability. The concentration of 30% showed lower changes compared to 35% and 40%, and the control group.
