Abstract

The Syrian Civil War is yet another war in a series thereof in the Arab Spring in which the United States and its allies are involved. However, an anomaly has occurred in the military coalition: Canada has significantly decreased the degree of its involvement by stopping its airstrikes within the Western coalition’s campaign. Employing a dual-perspective of classical realism and constructivism, this thesis seeks to find the determining factors to the event using the concepts of transcendent purpose and of norm dynamics. To arrive at the conclusion, this thesis investigates norms projected by Canada in relation to its military alliances, including but not limited to NATO. This thesis finds that, on the one hand, Canada has historically always defended its image by joining military coalitions involving the United States; on the other hand, however, Canada is always reluctant to engage in wars which defy its transcendent purpose, hence the best of both worlds. This thesis concludes that Canada’s foreign policy, in line with its transcendent purpose, constitutes of two factors: the Axworthy norms and legitimacy. In the Syrian Civil War, the United States-led coalition lacks both.

Abstract

The emergence of mobilised mass movements, demanding prosperity and the elimination of injustice, has emerged in various parts of the world, without exception in the Middle East and Indonesia. This movement was dominated by educated middle-class youth, sparked the term ummah, and then formed unique solidarity to protest against the government of his country. A new concept is needed by paying attention to the novelty of these characteristics, considering the old populism concept is not relevant enough to explain it. This paper seeks to raise the concept of New Islamic Populism to answer this deficiency. Furthermore, the Al-Mukmin Ngruki Islamic Boarding School (PPIM), the Islamic boarding school often associated with terrorism, is used as the object of research to show the evolution of populism. This study uses qualitative methods and data collection techniques in the form of interviews and literature studies. This study foundthat both santri and ustaz PPIM have aspirations and characteristics, asshown by the New Islamic Populism movement.

Abstract

This article explains how China's increased assertiveness in recent decades and the bureaucratic politics inside Indonesian government institutions have impacted Indonesia's response to the South China Sea dispute. Different from what others have found, this article will not discuss whether Indonesia's response is proper in dealing with China's assertiveness or vice versa. Instead, by applying the theory of Neoclassical Realism which incorporates the variables of external pressure and domestic politics, this article aspires to compare Indonesia's response under the leadership of Yudhoyono and Jokowi. Conducting a comparative analysis serves as a means to encapsulate and comprehend the trajectory of Indonesia's responses to the South China Sea dispute. Moreover, employing a qualitative descriptive research methodology, this study revealed that the assertive stance of China and Indonesia’s bureaucratic politics have influenced variations in the extent to which Indonesia employs multilateral and unilateral strategies in its response during the leaderships of Yudhoyono and Jokowi. Based on these findings, this article also formulates a model explaining Indonesia’s response to the South China Sea dispute.

Abstract

The process of securitization of anti-child sexual exploitation norms (anti-ESA) carried out by ECPAT Indonesia relies on two hegemonic discourses, namely the global hegemonic discourse on children's rights and the political discourse on state hegemony. Looking at using the Securitization Theory, this study finds that ECPAT Indonesia disseminates the ESA threat to the local community as a securitization audience but without conducting equivalent socialization. This inequality arises due to the securitization model carried out by ECPAT Indonesia which is imposing through state hegemony instead of accommodating differences in norm structures between global and local communities. This argument is supported by using critical discourse analysis that looks at interviews with ECPAT Indonesia and the press releases they issue. In researching this issue, this study finds that ECPAT Indonesia does design their operations by utilizing the two hegemonies that have been mentioned.
