Abstract

‘The clash of civilizations’ of Samuel Huntington and ‘the end of history’ of Francis Fukuyama are two grand theories that have been widely accepted as the most dominant narratives in post- Cold War international relations. Unfortunately, there have been little theoretical developments in today’s world to predict the future of international conflict. The theory assumed that the future international conflict will not occur between democracies and non-democracies as Democratic Peace Theory proposed, but between established democracies and emerging democracies. The established democracies reluctant to share their power with the emerging democracies on how to manage global order. This reluctancy will lead to political frictions and conflicts among them. In spite of its theoretical breakthrough, this theory suffers of logical inconsistency since it does not distinguish between emerging democracies and emerging powers. Instead of conflict among democracies, this article argues that international conflicts in the 21st century will be dominated by asimetrical conflict between nation-states and radical movements, conflicts due to information openess, and conflict over natural resources.

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia has been known to have abundant natural resources and culture-based creative industries. The country is therefore vulnerable to the practice of fraud of origin. One of many industrial sectors susceptible to thatparticular crime is the wooden furniture businesses. In many cases, it is apparent that natural products and raw materials of Indonesia are being exported without listing the country as the place of origin. The most commonIndonesian material falls within this illegal practice are timber products. In the province of Central Java, Jepara has been a prominent center of timber industry producing high quality timber products and wooden raw materials. From a unique standpoint, the timber industry in Jepara is deeply rooted to the culture and identity of the natives, making the attempt to separate the discussion between timber industry and the people of Jepara not only  imprudent but virtually impossible. By looking at the statistic in which Jepara’s public education level is assessed to be still below the national standard, and as well bearing to the general fact that the timber actors in Jepara are more focused on product sales rather than important technical aspects such as certification of origin, it should be projected that crimes such as fraud of origin could be easily committed in Jepara. This study is using a comparative advantage theory and theories or models of H-O to investigate how the practice of fraud of origin in Jepara occurs and how to resolve such problem.

Abstract

The Russian-Ukrainian conflict reached its peak in 2014. Conflict exacerbated by theexistence of war crimes has caused a humanitarian crisis with various socio-economicimpacts and also increased the number of refugees. Since August 2014, Russia has decidedto issue humanitarian aid policy in the conflict. This research analyzes the motives ofRussia's humanitarian aid policy in Donbas using the theory of neoclassical realism. Theresults reveal that the policy is a strategy to increase Russian influence in Ukraine.Anarchic international structure with nations competing for power became an independentvariable in this research. Putin's view on seeing Russia as a major power and Russia's rolein the international world becomes an intervening variable that translates the internationalsituation into the policy. The strategy of humanitarian aid policy with the motive ofmaintaining influence in Ukraine will also have an impact on the increasing position ofRussia in regional countries that can strengthen its status as a global player.

The escalation in insurgency by Southern Thailand separatist groups that began with the Arion military raid, the Krue-se and Tak Bai incidents in 2004, promted the Thai government to take securitization action against an ethnational nationalist issue that had not previously been considered a political issue. This research aimed an explanation of the securitization process undertaken by the Thai government to construct the ethnonationalist issue of Southern Thailand as a threat to Thailand's national security. Abstract

The Syrian Civil War is yet another war in a series thereof in the Arab Spring in which the United States and its allies are involved. However, an anomaly has occurred in the military coalition: Canada has significantly decreased the degree of its involvement by stopping its airstrikes within the Western coalition’s campaign. Employing a dual-perspective of classical realism and constructivism, this thesis seeks to find the determining factors to the event using the concepts of transcendent purpose and of norm dynamics. To arrive at the conclusion, this thesis investigates norms projected by Canada in relation to its military alliances, including but not limited to NATO. This thesis finds that, on the one hand, Canada has historically always defended its image by joining military coalitions involving the United States; on the other hand, however, Canada is always reluctant to engage in wars which defy its transcendent purpose, hence the best of both worlds. This thesis concludes that Canada’s foreign policy, in line with its transcendent purpose, constitutes of two factors: the Axworthy norms and legitimacy. In the Syrian Civil War, the United States-led coalition lacks both.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the reason why the join patrol in the Malacca Strait and Singapore, the Malacca Straits Patrol (MSP) ineffective to maintain security in the Malacca Strait and Singapore. The ineffective can be seen in the 2014 ReCAAP data where in 2014 there were 44 cases of piracy in the Malacca Strait and Singapore. Up 32 cases from 2013 and in 2015 it rose again to 94 cases. In analyzing the case this research will use realist theory. In the realist theory it is stated that in achieving a goal a country needs its national power. But the national power must be transformed into the real power of the country's government. Then for the data this study uses a literature study. Whereas for data analysis this research uses congruent data analysis. The results of this study indicate that the ineffective of the MSP in tackling cases of piracy and piracy is caused by thelimited military power of MSP members to carry out anti-piracy operations. This condition made worse by the quality of government of Malacca Strait Patrol member countries which are not good because they are not so concerned about these limitations.
