Abstract

Honeycomb-structured composite materials are widely used in engineering applications due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent energy absorption capabilities. Utilizing natural fibers, such as coconut coir, as the honeycomb core material offers an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative. However, the mechanical properties of the composite—particularly impact strength—are significantly influenced by the type of resin used as the matrix. This study aims to analyze the effect of resin type on the impact strength of coconut coir-core honeycomb composites and to identify the resin type that yields the best performance. The research employs a laboratory experimental method involving two resin variations: polyester resin and epoxy resin. Specimens were fabricated with a honeycomb structure, with volume fractions and dimensions controlled according to testing standards. Impact strength testing was conducted using the Charpy (or Izod) method in accordance with ASTM standards. The obtained data were analyzed quantitatively to compare the absorbed energy and impact strength values across the resin variations, and visually to identify the resulting fracture patterns. The study is expected to reveal significant differences in impact strength attributable to the resin types used. Resins exhibiting superior adhesion and toughness are anticipated to yield higher impact strength values and more ductile fracture patterns. This research aims to contribute to the development of lightweight, strong, and eco-friendly natural fiber-based composite materials for structural applications requiring resistance to impact loads.
