Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from impaired insulin secretion or action. Long-term use of antidiabetic drugs can cause side effects, necessitating safer therapeutic alternatives, such as those derived from natural sources. Pineapple core (Ananas comosus L.) is known to contain secondary metabolites—including flavonoids, saponins and tannins—that possess potential antidiabetic activity. This experimental study utilized male Wistar rats divided into several treatment groups: a negative control (Na-CMC), a positive control (glibenclamide) and extract groups receiving doses of 150, 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight. Blood glucose levels were measured on days 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 and 28. The results demonstrated that the ethyl acetate extract of pineapple core significantly reduced blood glucose levels (p<0.05) in alloxan-induced male Wistar rats. By day 28, the percentage reduction in blood glucose levels was approximately 35% for the 150 mg/kg dose, 52% for the 250 mg/kg dose and 65% for the 500 mg/kg dose. Meanwhile, the glibenclamide group showed a reduction of approximately 70%. The 500 mg/kg dose was the most effective at lowering blood glucose levels compared to the other doses.”
