Abstract

Abstract: Slang is confidential, informal English spoken which created and used by a particular community. This study discusses about an analysis of slang in Black Panther movie. The purpose of this study is to find the type and the meaning of slang used in a Black Panther movie. The source of the data was taken from the script of Black Panther movie. The Black Panther movie is classified as African action movies released on 14th February 2018 and directed by Ryan Coogler. The research design used in this study is descriptive qualitative research with a document or content analysis as the research type. This thesis described one by one word or phrase of slang found from Black Panther movie by using dictionaries and theory related about slang.From the analysis, there were three types of slangs, they were society slang, public house slang, and soldier slang. There were 8 words of society slang, 6 words of public house slang, and 1 word of soldier slang. Then the slang term in the form of words and phrases were classified and analyzed. The finding shows that there are some words and phrases of slang in Black Panther that have been classified into types of slang. The examples are Strap, Shit, Freeze, Baba, Guy, Chicks, Mate, and Feds.This research is expected to contribute to the reader's clear knowledge of slangs. It can assist the reader to talk fluent English. And fresh English vocabulary used in the daily discussion can also be anticipated to be enriched.Key Words: Slang, Movie, Black Panther

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out the significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing ability of the third year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. The sample of this research was class 6B, consisting of 35 students. The data were collected using two kinds of test; namely, a vocabulary test and writing test. The result of this research showed the third year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau achieved good level in both vocabulary and writing with the average score 77 in vocabulary and 67 in writing. The result of this research proved that there was a positive correlation between the vocabulary mastery and writing ability of the third year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. The Rxy distribution of the coefficient correlation was 0.541. It means that there was a fair correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing ability of the third year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Hα) was accepted.Key Words: Correlation, Vocabulary Mastery, Writing Ability

Abstract

Sago industry has the potential to pollute the environment. This is because the concentration of COD contained in the sago industry environment quality standard that exceeds 55,000 mg / L. One way to lower the COD concentration is by using a hybrid anaerobic bioreactor two stages. The purpose of this study was to remove COD and determine the highest COD removal efficiency in wastewater treatment sago tunak Volume working conditions hybrid anaerobic bioreactor two stages used in this study was 10 L to 20 L the first stage bioreactor and the second stage in the bioreactor with variations of organic loading rate is 27.50 kgCOD / m3hari the first bioreactor and organic loading rate of 7.86 kgCOD / m3hari; 11 kgCOD / m3hari; 18.33 kgCOD / m3hari on the second stage bioreactor. Each organic loading rate is operated until steady state based on the data obtained COD. The results showed that most of COD removal efficiency was obtained in the operation of the organic loading rate of 27.50 kgCOD / m3hari amounted to 87.88% in the first stage bioreactor and organic loading rate of 7.86 kgCOD / m3hari amounted to 93.94% in the second stage bioreactor. The system of hybrid anaerobic bioreactor two stages mediated phase of this stone can be used as a technology that is used for treating wastewater effectively and efficiently sago.Keywords: anaerobic bioreactor hybrid, COD, sago wastewater, two stages.

Abstract

Abstract: Textbook is a book that serves as a guideline for learners and teachers in supporting in teaching and learning process. In this study aims to analyze the English textbook based on BSNP. This research attempted to discover whether or not the English textbooks analyzed met the criteria of a good textbook adapted from BSNP instrument and whether it was relevant to the 2013 Curriculum and to find out how those criteria were fulfilled or not by those textbooks. This research design was content analysis with descriptive qualitative method, the subject of this research was English textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris” for second grade of Senior High School, the data source in this research were documents, the technique to collecting the data was content analysis technique. The result of the research showed that Bahasa inggris textbook had met the criteria of good textbook with the fulfillment 84.77 % The textbook was relevant to the 2013 Curriculum because most of the aspect in core competence and basic competence of 2013 Curriculum were reflect in the textbook. Teacher needs to seek out the compatibility of the textbook to use. This book met the most of the requirements and standart of a textbook in implementing 2013 Curriculum. By using this book in teaching and learning process, hopefully a good result is achieved. Through this research, evaluators can understand the result of evaluation by following standard BNSP which minister by education minister. Besides, evaluators can use this information and compare with standard evaluation based on experts to meet good criteria of English textbook.Keywords: textbook, 2013 Curriculum , BSNP instrument for textbook evaluation

Abstract

Abstract: This research is about the analysis of word formation processes of the latestupdated words in September 2023 in the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Online Dictionary(OALD). The objective of this research is to identify the types of word formation processes of the latest updated words in September 2023 in the OALD and to find out how the word formation processes occur in the latest updated words in September 2023 in the OALD. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The source of the data is the latest updated words in September 2023 in the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Online Dictionary. The data were collected through document analysis. The instrument of this research is the researcher himself. The technique of data analysis used in this research is descriptive analysis. The researcher found 150 words containing word formation processes. There are nine types of word formation processes found in this research, namely borrowing, compounding, clipping, blending, backformation, conversion, acronym, derivation, and multiple processes. The most dominant type of word formation process found in this research is compounding. From 150 data, there are 100 datacontaining compounding.Key Words: word formation processes, latest updated words, online dictionary

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to find out the ability level of the second-year studentsof MAS Yayasan Pendidikan Al-Falah in comprehending descriptive and narrative textsand also to investigate the aspect that is easy to understand (the highest score) ofnarrative and descriptive texts in students learning at MAS Yayasan Pendidikan Al-Falah. The researcher used a cluster random sampling technique to decide the sample.The total sample is 46 students, from class XI IPA 1 and XI IPS 2. A test was applied tocollect data. There were 48 multiple-choice reading questions with 3 descriptive and 3narrative texts. The finding shows that the student’s ability in reading comprehension isat different levels, but most students are at mediocre levels, both in descriptive andnarrative text. Meanwhile, the aspect that gets the highest score in the descriptive text isin Guessing inference (I), and in the narrative text is in General Structure (GS).Key Words: Reading Comprehension Ability, Descriptive Text, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research is to find out whether or not there is significant correlation between social media usage and English vocabulary mastery of the fifth-semester students of the English Study Program Universitas Riau. By applying the quantitative method, this research used a population with the total 112 students of the fifth semester, while the samples were 76 students, who were selected using a cluster random sampling technique. The research isntruments are a Questionnaire and a Test. The questionnaire is to measure social media usage (Safitri, 2021; Sivagnanam and Yunus, 2020), and the vocabulary test is to measure the vocabulary mastery of the students adapted from TOEFL book (Riau University Language Center, 2014) and TOEFL book by (Kardimin, 2008). The researcher used IBM SPSS Statistics 25 to analyze the data. The results of the data analysis showed that the average student's use of social media is 92.3, which is considered to be at a "high" level, while the average student's mastery of vocabulary is 79.4, which is considered to be at a "good" level. Additionally, the research finding showed that the correlation coefficient of the two variables is 0.489, considered a positive and moderate correlation. and the determinant coefficient is 0.2391, which implies social media usage has a 24% influence on the students' vocabulary mastery, meanwhile 76% being influenced by other factors.Keywords: Correlation, Social Media Usage, Vocabulary Mastery

Abstract

Translation is an activity in which students learn and transfer meaning from English to Indonesian, or vice versa. This research aims at determining the perception of English study program students towards the use of Google Translate for writing assignments. This research was a mixed-method research. The researchers used interview and questionnaire as the instruments of this research. The data obtained from interview was analyzed qualitatively, and the data obtained from questionnaire was analyzed quantitatively using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software and Microsoft Excel. The result showed that 62.6% of English students had a positive opinion of Google Translate when using it for writing projects. The average of every item was used to determine this value. Item 13 displayed 59% of the data, which was the middle figure or percentage. The item with the highest score, item 3, received a 71%. The perception on the use of Google Translate among fourth-semester English students at Riau University in writing assignments was positive, despite participants stating that the writing process with Google Translate was only to expand vocabulary. Students realized Google Translate can help them in writing. At last, the majority of English students utilize Google Translate to increase their vocabulary.
