Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study is to find out the habits of English reading among the students of English Study Program of Riau University. The method used in this research is quantitative research and the design is survey study. A questionnaire was used as the instrument of this research. The questionnaire involved seven indicators of reading habits: attitudes toward reading, reading frequency, reading materials read, time spend on academic reading, time spend on non-academic reading, motivation in the family environment, and motivation out of the family environment. SPSS Statistics 17.0 program was used to analyse the data. The data analysis displayed only a few number of students who have a habit toward English reading. The finding also proved that the frequency of students in reading English materials was less than 25%. However, the data of attitudes toward reading reveals that most of students (80.2%) aware that reading in English was important for their future. Conducting research to gain a broad overview of the reading habits of EFL learners, the researcher made suggestions to promote English reading habits among university students, especially the students of English Study Program.Keywords: Reading, Reading Habits, Survey Study

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive study aimed to find out the ability of fourth semester students of English Study Program of University of Riau in using reduced adverb clauses in sentences, and to analyze kinds of students’ difficulties in using reduced adverb clauses in sentences. This study was based on the students’ problem where they were still confused in using reduced adverb clauses in sentences even they had learnt it on second and third semesters. They will have any subject in the next semester that related to this topic, in this case that is TOEFL Preparation. Therefore, it was needed to do some research in order to know their abilities in using reduced adverb clauses in sentences. This research was conducted in two sessions; try out and real test. The instruments of this study were 40 questions and it was in transformation/ changing the passage test. The research finding shows that fourth semester students of English Study Program of University of Riau were still less average in using reduced adverb clauses. Their mean score was only 48 in the try out test, then in the real test students’ mean score was 50. This research also proves that the most difficult kind of reduced adverb clauses for students was reduced in passive since their mean score was only 30. Based on this finding, it was suggested to fourth Semester Students of English Study Program of Teachers’ Training and Education Faculty in University of Riau to re read and practice materials about reduced adverb clauses and re recognise and surely practiceabout how to make passive sentence again properly.Keywords: grammar, using reduced adverb clauses, fourth semester students’ ability

Abstract

Abstract Reading Journal is a possible instrument to find out what and how learners do extensive reading and explore their perceptions about what and how they read. This article is based on one of instruments for a study on Exploring Extensive Reading in Developing English Language Competency of Indonesia EFL Learners. The study is a case study and one of the data collected through journal entry. This article aims to present the findings of the study in terms of types of reading materials that an Indonesian learner read for extensive reading and learner’s perceptions about the reading materials. The findings from this instrument are: (1) types of reading materials that an Indonesian learner read for extensive reading were a book about health and a novel about ditective and (2) an Indonesian learner’s perceptions’ about reading materials were her interest in terms of the use for the book and pleasure for the novel. This study suggests that learners need to write journal for extensive reading materials. This study also recommends to include what learners learn in journal entry by reading the novel selected for further.Keywords: characteristics and benefit of Extensive Reading

Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to describe the student’s ability in comprehending report texts and aimed to find out the students ability in comprehending report texts for each component and the level of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy indicated in the ability. This research took place in SMAN 1 Bantan Kabupaten Bengkalis that collected from February to April 2017. The try out class was XI IPS 3 (26 students) and the sample was XI IPA 1 (29 students) chosen by cluster random sampling. The result showed that the ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Bantan in comprehending report texts for each component is in good level which the mean score was 60.0, however, the students have not passed the minimum score of the school which is 76. For the level of remembering; finding factual information the mean score was 73.4, finding references was 42.5, finding meaning of difficult words was 42.2. The level of understanding (finding restatement) the mean score was 62.0, for the analyzing level (finding main idea) the mean score was 72.7. and the level of evaluating (finding social function) was 64.8. Therefore, this research suggested the English teachers to focus on the level and components that students still find difficulities and categorized them into poor level. Students should learn the components in report texts and other text types. Further researchers are expected to find the standard guidance of classification of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy indicated the components of reading comprehension.Key Words: Student’s Ability, Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy, Comprehending Report Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research was to find out whether there is a significant effect of using wordless picture on the second year students’ ability of SMPN 14 Pekanbaru in writing narrative texts.This research is a pre-experimental research using one group pre-test post-test design. In conducting this research, a single group without control group was selected to be a sample. There were 31 students were selected as the sample by using cluster random sampling. A writing test was used both in pre and post-test. T-test formula was used in order to find out the difference between pre-test and post-test and to analyze the hypotheses. After analyzing the data, it was found that t-test score was 6.302 while t-table score in significance level 5% df= 29was 2.05. Since t-test was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. It can be further understood that “there is a significant effect of using wordless picture on the second year students’ ability of SMPN 14 Pekanbaru in writing narrative texts”. Based on the research findings, it is suggested that wordless picture can help the students to improve their writing ability especially in writing narrative text.Key Words: Effect,Wordless Picture, Writing Ability, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to know the effect of storytelling technique on student’s speaking ability of first year students of SMAN 2 Pekanbaru. This research was pre-experimental design involving 36 students as a sample chosen through cluster random sampling. The data were gained after before and after the treatment implementing storytelling technique. The students were given pre-test and post-test. The result of this research shows that storytelling technique had an effect to student’s speaking ability because there was a significant difference between the post-test and pre-test. It shows that the storytelling technique could help the students to improve their speaking ability. This research suggests that the students should read and speak more to improve their speaking ability.Keywords: Effect, Ability, Storytelling.

Abstract

EFL learners majoring in English experience different reading histories which areinterested to be explored. It can be conducted through one of classroom activities in Extensive Reading. This article is based on the literature review for a study “Exploring Personal Reading Histories for Learners of FKIP University of Riau”. This article aims to describe how Exploring Personal Reading Histories is appropriate for the learners of FKIP University of Riau. Critical analysis was conducted in order to gain the aim of this study. The result of analysis shows how Exploring Personal Reading Histories is appropriate for Learners of FKIP University of Riau in terms of the context of Indonesian EFL learners and the activities of extensive reading for reading competency. The result of this review is expected to be meaningful for the study designed.

Abstract

Becoming interest in reading for EFL learners majoring in English is as the reflection of interaction with others in reading experiences. This article is a critical analysis of related theories for analyzing a study “The Analysis of Reading Experiences based on Exploring Personal Reading Histories for Learners of FKIP University of Riau”. This article aims to explore how Sociocultural theory is appropriate in analyzing the learners‟ experiences based on Exploring Personal Reading Histories for the learners of FKIP University of Riau. Critical analysis was conducted in this study. The result of analysis shows that Sociocultural theory is appropriate for learners of FKIP University of Riau in terms of reading experiences of Indonesian learners mediated by language, interact with others, and develop self-regulation in the process for reading competence and reading interest. The finding shows how the concept of mediation, practice, scaffolding, self-direction, and zone of proximal development in Sociocultural theory reflect on the learners‟ reading experiences. The result of the analysis is expected to be meaningful for the study designed.

Abstract: This pre-experimental research is aimed to find out whether or not there is an effect of Round Table Technique on the writing ability of the second year students of SMPN 40 Pekanbaru in writing recount texts. This research used one group pre-test and post-test design. In conducting this research, a single group from the second grade was selected to be a sample by using Cluster Random Sampling. There are 36 students as the sample. The results of this study shows that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test (49.12 > 41.13). After analyzing the data, the writer found that t-test score was -10.645 while t-table score in significance level 5% df = 35 was 2.030. Since the value of the t-test was higher than the t-table, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis was accepted. It means that “there is an effect of Round Table Technique on the students’ writing ability of SMPN 40 Pekanbaru in writing recount texts. Based on the research findings, it is suggested that Round Table Technique can help the students improve their writing ability especially in writing recount texts.Key Words: Effect, Round Table Technique, Writing Ability, Recount Text
