Abstract

Harald Motzki is one of the orientalists who study the hadith objectively. One of Motzki's theories in studying hadith is isnad cum matn. This theory is a method in searching the history of hadith and combining aspects of isnad and matan as well as the Common Link theory which was popularized by Juynbol. In this article the author uses misogynistic traditions about the creation of women, bearing in mind that these traditions are often used as a reason to legitimize discrimination against women. The author found that misogynistic traditions about the creation of women were delivered by the Prophet himself, and at the same time, the Prophet also became the common link of these hadiths. In Mysoginy perspectives raditions or more specifically traditions that talk about the creation of women from ribs are also authentic from the Prophet and are delivered in two versions, namely the long version and the short version, which are then recorded in several hadith books.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the fact that acts of violence in the name of religion are mostly carried out by groups associated with Salafi pesantren (Islamic boarding schools). Some pesantren have become fertile ground for the spread of radical ideologies. On the other hand, radical understandings are often born from a literal reading of religious texts, one that disregards context. Therefore, this study aims to critically examine the understanding and interpretation of religious texts by the elites of Pesantren Salafiyah Depati Agung and Pesantren Sa’adatuddarein, particularly those texts that are frequently used as a foundation in discourses on religious moderation. The texts in focus are QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 143 and 256. This study will also analyze the epistemological constructs behind their interpretations. This research uses qualitative methods with data collection techniques including interviews and documentation. The theoretical framework applied is the theory of exegesis reception, which involves understanding the Qur'an by interpreting its message based on linguistic meaning. To further analyze the construction of their interpretations of these verses, the study employs an epistemological theory of interpretation, which examines the sources, methods, approaches, patterns, and characteristics of interpretation. The findings of this study are as follows: First, the elites of Pesantren Salafiyah Depati Agung interpret QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 143 and 256 as legitimizing the view that Ahlussunnah wal Jama’ah is a moderate group within the Muslim community, represented in Indonesia by Nahdlatul Ulama. In contrast, the elites of Pesantren Sa’adatuddarein do not attempt to link these verses to any particular group or sect. According to them, these verses speak to the superiority of the Muslim community over previous religious communities. Second, an epistemological analysis reveals that the elites of Pesantren Salafiyah Depati Agung tend to interpret the texts through reason (bi al-ra’y), with an ijmali-contextual method and approach. The tone and characteristics of their interpretation are theological-sectarian. Meanwhile, the elites of Pesantren Sa’adatuddarein tend to follow a bi al-ma'tsur approach, using ijmali-textual methods and approaches, with a theological-normative tone in their interpretations.

Abstract

There are many factors that influence the occurrence of acts of violence in the name of religion. One of them is the misreading of religious texts, giving birth to a single perspective. To overcome this, it is necessary to review how the Qur'an in essence teaches religion in moderation. Therefore, this article will discuss about religious moderation in the Qur'an perspective of Ahmad al-Shawi. He is one of the mufasir whose work is quite influential in Indonesia. Most Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia use Tafsir al-Shawi as a reference in studying Qur'anic tafsir. This research focuses on al-Shawi's interpretation of QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 143 is a verse that is often associated with the foundation of religious moderation. This research is qualitative research using descriptive-analytical methods. The results showed that ummah wasath referred to in QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 143 is a person who has a moderate attitude characterized by several criteria, namely fair, commendable character, knowledge, and practicing his knowledge.

Abstract

Abraham Geiger stated that the Qur'an took a lot from the teachings of the Jewish religion, both cultural and transcendent. This study aims to discuss and refute the views of an orientalist named Abraham Geiger on the authenticity of the Qur'an. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach. The results and discussion of this study indicate that Abraham Geiger's accusation that the Koran is only a reflection of Muhammad on Judaism and Christianity is a false accusation. The accusations made by Abraham Geiger do not eliminate the authenticity of the Qur'an as the holy book of Muslims, because historical facts prove that the entire contents of the Qur'an were narrated by many people who continued the chain to the Messenger of Allah. If the criteria for news of mutawatir are mentioned, then the Qur'an has met that criterion.

Abstract

Flexing culture, which refers to the act of showcasing wealth and social status, has become a common phenomenon in the digital era, especially on social media. This culture represents a materialistic lifestyle that has the potential to create social inequality and spiritual crises. This study aims to analyze flexing culture from the perspective of the Qur’an by highlighting its contradiction with the values of tauhid. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method using a thematic interpretation (tafsir maudhu’i) approach, analyzing Qur’anic verses related to wealth, arrogance, and worldly life. This study finds that flexing culture contradicts the principle of tauhid, as it promotes behaviors such as arrogance (takabbur), ostentation (riya’), and wastefulness (israf), all of which are criticized in the Qur’an. In contrast, the Qur’an emphasizes the importance of simplicity, gratitude, and the responsible use of wealth. In conclusion, flexing culture is inconsistent with Qur’anic values and should be addressed through the strengthening of spiritual awareness and ethical use of social media.

Abstract

AbstractThe study of hadith among Western scholars has developed quite significantly, especially after the appearance of Ignaz Goldziher with his work entitled Muhammedanische Studien. This development ultimately mapped the study of hadith in the West to become one-way. Western scholars have different thoughts from one another. Herbert Berg divides into three groups of Western scholars who study hadith based on their attitudes and thoughts, namely scepticism, sanguine, and middle ground. However, some experts in hadith studies only divide it into two groups, namely skeptics and non-skeptics. So, thus, there are differences of opinion regarding the position of some orientalists. For example, Juynboll was positioned by Herbert Berg in the middle ground group while other experts positioned him in the skeptical orientalist group. In order to explore this problem, the writer examines Juynboll's thoughts on the Prophet's hadith, especially in relation to the theory that is always embedded with his name, namely the common link theory. The author finds that Juynboll is not as skeptical as to his predecessors, who generalized the Prophet's hadith as questionable its authenticity. Juynboll still idealizes the existence of a hadith that can truly be accounted for its authenticity coming from the Prophet even though it is very small. That was why he was included by Herbert Berg in the middle ground group.

Abstract

One of the factors for the occurrence of acts of violence in the name of religion is inaccuracy in reading religious texts. One form of such inaccuracy is the literal reading of the Qur'an and the hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him). For example, the hadith whose editorship says that the Prophet (peace be upon him) once drove non-Muslims out of the Arabian Peninsula. This hadith will impact rigid understanding and foster anti-Muslim attitudes if taken literally. Therefore, in this paper, the author tries to re-read these hadiths using hermeneutic analysis to find the contextual meaning of these hadiths. This literature research is carried out qualitatively by collecting data from primary and secondary sources which are then analyzed using a hermeneutic approach. The conclusion is that the hadith was delivered by the Prophet (peace be upon him) in the position of head of state so that the hadiths he delivered had implications for state issues, not creed issues. The expulsion was not directed at non-Muslims as a whole but only at specific individuals who could threaten the stability of Medina at that time.
