Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the awareness and utilization of social network for learning among undergraduate students at Al-hikmah University, Ilorin, Nigeria. Gender, technology background, age, level, and area of specialization are the variables involved. The descriptive survey research design was employed to draw responses with the use of a self-structured questionnaire. All Al-hikmah university students are the population of the study while the target population are 200leve to 400level students from which a sample size of 400 undergraduate students was selected via random sampling techniques from six out of seven faculties available. The instrument was validated by experts and the reliability co-efficient using a split-half test was 0.86. Four research questions and one hypothesis were used for the study. Frequency distribution, charts, and t-test were the statistical tools used to analyse the data. The findings indicated that social network is used for educational purposes with improved engagement, better understanding of the subject matter as it helps to reinforce learning with technology because 80.0% of learners were digital native. Despite the benefits, the social network can interrupt personal study, distract the conventional classroom learning, loss of privacy and exposure to cybercrimes as indicated by the respondents with 82%, 68%, and 55% respectively. Hence, Tertiary Institutions should organize series of seminars, workshops, conferences to update, enlighten and encourage students and lecturers on the good and not forgetting the not too-good and disadvantages attached with the use of the social network as a tool for learning and interaction.  Corresponding author: Semiu Olawale MakindeDOI: 10.24071/ijiet.2020.040204

Abstract

This study investigated the influence of social/mass media as agent of change on childhood social pedagogy and academic achievement in Lagos, Nigeria. Specifically this study examined the impact of social/mass media on early age children social pedagogy and the aftermath effect on their academic achievement in Lagos, Nigeria. The research design was a descriptive type of survey. The sampling technique adopted was purposive and used to sample the population from upper primary school pupils of age 6 to 9 years. This age range can respond to the instrument of the research with free mind. Respondents to the validated questionnaire of reliability index of 0.87 were 490 pupils of 240 boys and 250 girls from ten Nursery and Primary schools in Ifako Ijaiye, Lagos. Three research objectives were raised for the study. Simple percentages and charts were used to represent and analyse the responses from the respondents. The findings show that the social/mass media especially the android phone and television were powerful devices that influence the lives of early age pupils. It teaches them on how to relate with their environment, improve their performance in school and also a means where they cultivate negative attitudes towards people. Conclusively, the media content effect on young pupils depends on the upbringing, because they react to social/mass media differently and are not influenced the same way. Hence, the type of media contents they exposed to should be monitored in other not to be influenced adversely.

Abstract

This research proposes the development and validation of a Moodle-based flipped learning strategy for enhancing basic communication in Arabic among undergraduates in Nigeria, using Al-Hikmah University as a case study. Flipped learning is a model that redefines traditional classroom activities, enhances engagement, and deepens understanding. Integration with Moodle, a widely used Learning Management System (MLS), creates a structured environment for content delivery. The study involves creating Arabic language modules on Moodle, including instructional videos, multimedia, and interactive exercises. These modules support self-paced learning, enabling students to review materials before class, with in-class time dedicated to collaborative activities. Effectiveness will be assessed through quantitative and qualitative measures, including pre- and post-assessment tests, surveys, and focus group discussions. Anticipated outcomes include improved language proficiency, increased participation, and enhanced communication skills. Validating the flipped learning platform using Moodle at Al-Hikmah University will provide valuable insights into language education, particularly for enhancing Arabic communication skills. The study's novelty lies in its innovative use of flipped learning, customized application of Moodle, focus on a unique demographic, and practical approach to language acquisition. This research offers a blueprint for future implementations in diverse educational settings, promoting the broader adoption of technology-enhanced learning methods.

Abstract

The shift from traditional to technology-driven learning has brought numerous advantages, with the Internet of Things (IoT) emerging as a promising avenue for enhancing educational experiences. Despite its potential, undergraduates have not fully embraced IoT for learning, primarily due to a lack of awareness. This study investigates the awareness of IoT among undergraduates, considering gender and area of specialization. Using a descriptive survey method, the research focuses on undergraduates in Kwara State universities, employing random and stratified sampling. Data collection utilized a validated questionnaire, and analysis involved percentages, mean scores, t-tests, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Findings revealed smartphones as the most widely used IoT devices. Gender significantly influenced IoT awareness. However, the area of specialization did not significantly impact awareness. Conclusively, undergraduates are employing IoT devices for learning, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness among female students and encouraging widespread utilization of these technologies for improved educational experiences.

Abstract

This study examined the perception and attitude of undergraduates toward online learning platforms (OLPs) in the post-COVID-19 era in Kwara State, Nigeria. The COVID-19 pandemic forced educational institutions to adopt virtual learning environments, making it essential to understand students' experiences because these insights are critical for improving education delivery in the new normal. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were collected from 383 undergraduates across federal, state, and private universities selected through random sampling. A structured questionnaire measured three variables: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and overall attitude toward OLPs. The findings revealed that students generally held positive perceptions and attitudes, although variations were observed based on gender and institution type because of differences in access, digital literacy, and learning environments. This study underscores the importance of inclusive digital strategies and infrastructure to support equitable and effective learning experiences across Nigeria’s higher education system.

Abstract

This study investigated emotional Intelligence and self-efficacy as determinants of ICT Competence among Professional Counsellors in Kwara State, Nigeria. A descriptive research design of survey type was used. Two null hypotheses were formulated and tested to ascertain the relationship between independent variables and dependent variables. Three instruments: The emotional intelligence scale with a reliability index of 0.68; the General Self-Efficacy Scale with a 0.74 reliability coefficient; and the ICT skill scale with a 0.83 reliability coefficient were adapted for the study. The target population were all 230 professional counsellors in Kwara State, Nigeria. A Purposive sampling technique was used to select 120 professional counsellors in Kwara State as respondents. Data collected was analyzed using inferential statistical tools of Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC) to test the relationship between variables of the study at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings show that there was a significant positive relationship between emotional intelligence, self-efficacy and ICT competence among professional counsellors in Kwara State.  The study concluded that emotional intelligence and self-efficacy are strong determinants of ICT competency but self-efficacy is stronger among professional counsellors in Kwara State, Nigeria. Hence, it was recommended among others that the university management should equip the counselling units with modern ICT tools like radio recording machines, and computers with Internet facilities to ensure professional counsellors’ high emotional intelligence and maximum self-efficacy which could facilitate effective integration of ICT for the provision of counselling services to students and staff.
