Abstract

Violence in the name of religion continues to sprout within Indonesian society. This article aims to describe the religious conflict resolution model of the NU Ansor Youth Movement and the Muhammadiyah Youth of the Paciran Lamongan Branch. This research employs a qualitative method with a sociological approach to religion, and data collection was conducted through interviews and the study of relevant literature. The findings of this study indicate that: 1) Both the NU Ansor Youth Movement and Muhammadiyah Youth reject violent models of preaching. 2) There is a difference in attitude towards perpetrators of violence, where the NU Ansor Youth Movement tends to adopt a non-accommodative firm stance, unequivocally rejecting and insisting that perpetrators of violence must be punished according to legal statutes, whereas Muhammadiyah Youth exhibits a firm-accommodative attitude, sternly condemning acts of violence but remaining willing to embrace and invite the perpetrators back to a tolerant and inclusive understanding. 3) The media of resolution employed include issuing advisory letters, press releases to the media, dialogues among community elements, conveying deradicalization insights through religious study sessions (Yasinan and Tahlilan), and the formation of Densus 99 Anti-Terror. 4) The conflict resolution model consists of two stages: long-term, aiming to build cadre awareness of the importance of a tolerant attitude and peaceful living through education, training, social and economic empowerment, ideological development, and the distribution of cadres to the public domain; and short-term, wherein preaching programs are executed sporadically and reactively at the time or after acts of violence to prevent the expansion and escalation of conflict.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the relevance of pluralist thought pioneered by Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) to Generation Z as a means of strengthening religious moderation in the current era, enabling them to act wisely in various situations and phenomena. This research employs a library research method, involving the collection of written data or works related to Gus Dur’s pluralist ideas, which are bibliographical in nature. The findings of this study indicate that Gus Dur’s pluralist thought remains highly relevant to the challenges faced by Generation Z today. The discussion identifies religious moderation from the perspective of Gus Dur’s pluralism, encouraging imitation and emulation of his attitudes and behaviours when addressing various religious situations and phenomena. Gus Dur serves as a role model for demonstrating tolerance, inclusivity, and harmony within diversity—qualities that are crucial for Generation Z, who navigate a world of digital information and complex social dynamics. This study concludes that Gus Dur’s pluralist views significantly contribute to strengthening religious moderation among Generation Z, fostering a spirit of tolerance and inclusiveness, and reinforcing national solidarity and unity. For future researchers, it is recommended to further develop similar studies to provide deeper, more comprehensive insights and address existing research gaps.

Abstract

This article examines non-Muslim perspectives on Islam, focusing on Toshihiko Izutsu’s semantic analysis of the Quran. Izutsu, a Japanese scholar, applied a linguistic approach to explore key Quranic concepts such as Allah, iman (faith), and kufr (disbelief), tracing their transformation from pre-Islamic contexts into Islam’s theocentric worldview. Through semantic analysis—involving the collection, comparison, and interpretation of words within conceptual fields—the study reveals how the Quran shapes dynamic value systems and ontology. The findings demonstrate Islam’s transformation of Arab societal paradigms from anthropocentric to Allah-centric, while affirming the Quran’s universal relevance as a guide for humanity. The article also evaluates Izutsu’s contributions to interdisciplinary religious studies, bridging Eastern philosophical sensitivity with Western methodologies. This semantic approach enriches the understanding of sacred texts and fosters cross-cultural and interreligious dialogue, highlighting the Quran’s adaptability to contemporary ethical and existential challenges. Keywords: Non-Muslim studies, Quranic semantics, Toshihiko Izutsu, Weltanschauung, Conceptual transformation.

Abstract

The Manganan tradition in Tuban is a cultural practice passed down through generations, undergoing transformations due to the influence of Islamization. Initially, this tradition served as an expression of gratitude to ancestors for agricultural harvests. However, with the introduction of Islamic teachings, a transformation occurred, strengthening Islamic values within the practice. One of the most significant changes is the integration of Tabligh Akbar into the Manganan ceremony. This study employs a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods to understand the religious and cultural dynamics from a syncretic perspective. The findings reveal that Tabligh Akbar plays a role in Islamizing the Manganan ritual without entirely eliminating local cultural elements. This process reflects a pattern of syncretism, where the community maintains traditional values while adapting religious teachings. Despite shifts in ritual practices, this tradition remains upheld as a form of solidarity, mutual cooperation, and respect for religious values. Thus, the Manganan tradition combined with Tabligh Akbar serves as an example of how religion and culture can interact harmoniously in a dynamic unity. The Manganan tradition in Tuban is a cultural practice passed down through generations, undergoing transformations due to the influence of Islamization.
