Abstract

The focus of this study is to examine how Batak Angkola Muslim women, particularly mothers, implement the 3H philosophy—Hamoraon (wealth), Hagabeon (lineage), and Hasangapon (honor)—in shaping strong and dignified family character. These three cultural values have long been the foundation of the Batak Angkola community. However, amid modernization and socio-economic challenges, their application needs contextual adjustment. This study aims to explore the strategic role of mothers in passing down and applying the 3H philosophy in shaping children's character, as well as to identify the challenges they face and the strategies they use. This study employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to understand participants' lived experiences. Data were gathered through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, involving housewives and community leaders in the Angkola region, South Tapanuli. Findings show that mothers play a key role in instilling the 3H values through daily parenting and support for education. Despite limited resources, Angkola mothers show resilience and strong commitment to their children's success, especially in formal education. The integration of Islamic values with local culture strengthens mothers’ roles in character building. Academically, this study highlights how maternal roles help preserve cultural-religious values in indigenous Muslim communities. It also enriches the field of character education by offering a culturally rooted model of value transmission that combines local wisdom and Islamic ethics. This can serve as a reference for culturally responsive education policies and gender-inclusive family studies.
