Abstract

Single garlic is one plant that has antibacterial properties. Compounds that act as antibacterial are flavonoids, saponins and allicin. The aim of this study was to prove the antibacterial activity of a single bulb garlic ethanol fraction and to find out the active compound agent which acts as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The single bulb garlic extraction process was carried out by maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent, the extract continued with the fractionation process with ethanol, n-hexane and chloroform solvents.  Antibacterial activity testing used paper disc method with a concentration of 15%, 30%, 45%, 60%, 75% and 90%, chloramphenicol positive control and aquadest negative control. Antibacterial test results the largest single bulb garlic ethanol fraction was at a concentration of 90% with a inhibition zone diameter of 8.32 in S. aureus and 9.08 in E. coli. Test the compound content using the GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) method. The results of the antibacterial test were the largest single garlic chloroform fraction at a concentration of 90% with an inhibition zone diameter of 8.32 in S. aureus while 9.08 in E. coli. GC-MS test results obtained organosulfur DATS compound (Dialyl trisulfide).  Keywords: Allium Sativum L., Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, GC-MS

Abstract

Papaya flowers in the community are believed to be antidiabetics, prevent cancer, lower cholesterol, and as antibacterial. Based on its antibacterial properties, the ethanol fraction of papaya flowers will be made in the form of cream preparations. This study aims to find out the activity of papaya flower ethanol fraction cream preparations against the bland growth power of acne-causing Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Ethanol fractions of papaya flower are formulated into cream preparations with fraction concentrations of F1 (2%), F2 (4%), F3 (6%), and F4 (8%) using oil phases (stearic acid, paraffin liquidum, and adeps lanae), water phase (TEA and aquadest) and preservatives (methyl parabens). Furthermore, the cream tested antibacterial activity and physical properties include homogeneity, organoleptic, pH, viscosity, scattering power, adocity and stability. The results showed F1, F2, F3, and F4 each had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria as evidenced by the presence of bland zones in F1 (17.35 mm), F2 (17.77 mm), F3 (18.90 mm), and F4 (19.73 mm). The resulting data is normal and homogeneous distributed data so that the results of the ANOVA test show a significant difference of 0.0000 (p ≤ 0.05) and Tukey Post Hoc test results are obtained significant differences between formulas. The results of the evaluation of cream preparations on observation of homogeneity are less stable and organoleptic have stable results, pH values of 5.62-6.62, viscosity of 4122-4432 cps, scatter power of 5.13-5.70 cm, and akat for 4.86-6.43 seconds. Cycling tests showed stable results in F1, F2 and F3 and less stable in F4. The conclusion of this research is that the formulation ethanol fraction of papaya flower cream preparations has activity against the inhibition of the growth of acne-causing Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Abstract

The tuber of cyperus rotundus are used to tradisional medicine. C. rotundus known to contain compounds of secondary metabolites such as alkoloids, sineol, pinene, siperon, rotunal, siperenon, siperol, tannins, flavonoids and scientifically it has been believed to have antimicrobial activity. Empirically this plant are used as an antibacterial, antitumor, anticancer, and antiallergic. The purpose of this study were determining the inhibition of extract of Cyperus rotundus against tubers of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes. In this study C. rotundus extracted by maceration using 70% ethanol. The extracts tested against S. epidermidis and P. acnes using disc blank method. The results obtained from the mean diameter of the inhibition zones of exstract at concentrations of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% on S. Epidermidis 8.03 mm, 11.43 mm, 15.04 mm, 15.83 mm and 19.98 mm respectively and P. acnes 11.59 mm, 13.35 mm, 17.17 mm, 20.44 mm, and 30.08 mm respectively Aquades used as negative control and erythromycin used as positive control. Testing were continued by determining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC). The result of MIC for S. epidermidis was 15% and P. acnes was 11%. The analysis showed that the antibacterial activity of the tubers extract is bacteriostatic for S. epdermidis and bacterisid for P. acnes.
