Abstract

The majority of people are concentrating on using technology for many things, including communication. Technology significantly affects learning outcomes in educational environments. It depends on the teacher's technological know-how and competence. With technology, it might be simpler to decide whether a teacher should join the class in person or virtually. Delivering lectures with a creative and engaging design is a wonderful way to get students excited. The flipped classroom is a new paradigm in learning that has been utilized by teachers. In this approach, the teacher can present the lectures online and then discuss them offline during the following meeting. Since the pandemic had nearly coming to an end and teachers should be able to switch between online classes and offline classes, flipped classrooms have grown in popularity. This research is a narrative study that aims to identify the teachers' challenges in optimizing students' speaking skills by using flipped classroom. Speaking has a crucial part in determining a student's success in language learning. In order to confirm the beneficial effects of flipped classroom in speaking classes, the present research aims to elaborate teachers' perceptions in improving students' speaking skills through flipped classroom. The participants in this study were 4 English teachers from two senior high schools in East Priangan, West Java. The research employed a qualitative approach to gather data, by using a diary and an interview. The diary includes a few questions on their experiences with the flipped classroom implementation process, and the interview covers the challenges, strategies, and perspectives faced by doing so in order to improve students' speaking abilities. The results of this study proved that employing flipped classrooms made teachers feel more supported and students' speaking abilities increased. Additionally, flipped classrooms have a beneficial effect on learning activity because they may foster active learning.

Abstract

EFL students frequently face challenges in understanding cultural references, idioms, and slang, which can hinder vocabulary acquisition and overall language comprehension. This issue raises important questions about the accessibility and effectiveness of various language learning tools for learners from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This study explored the impact of using pop culture English movies for vocabulary acquisition among EFL college students. A qualitative case study method was employed, involving 40 participants, with 10 students from each grade level completing a questionnaire and 10 participating in follow-up interviews. Data were collected through Likert-scale questionnaires to explore students’ perceptions and semi-structured interviews to investigate the strategies for learning vocabulary through movies. The results indicated that students generally found movies valuable for vocabulary acquisition, particularly enhancing their listening skills and contextual understanding. Most students reported increased confidence in using new vocabulary learned through movies. They employed various strategies, including note-taking, subtitles, and engaging in peer discussions. However, challenges such as difficulty understanding cultural references and the fast pace of dialogues were significant obstacles. Despite these, many students preferred learning vocabulary through movies over traditional classroom methods. The study concluded that pop culture English movies can be an effective tool for vocabulary acquisition, provided that students are guided in using appropriate learning strategies. Future research should focus on the long-term impact of movie-based learning on vocabulary retention and the potential benefits of different movie genres for language learning.

Abstract

The integration of digital textbooks in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom has become more common, particularly as digital literacy grows in importance for 21st-century learners. While many digital learning tools are available, there is limited research that closely examines how digital textbooks contribute to students’ digital literacy development in real classroom practice, especially in EFL contexts. This study aimed to explore how the use of digital textbooks contributes to students’ digital literacy development in EFL learning from both student and teacher perspectives. A qualitative case study was conducted involving classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with students and an English teacher. The analysis was guided by Hague and Payton’s digital literacy framework by covering eight aspects: functional skills, creativity, critical thinking and evaluation, cultural and social understanding, collaboration, ability to find and select information, effective communication, and safeguarding. The findings indicated that digital textbooks supported several aspects of digital literacy, particularly functional skills, information selection, and critical evaluation. However, certain aspects, such as creativity and safeguarding, were less frequently observed. The study concludes that digital textbooks have the potential to foster digital literacy in EFL settings, but their effectiveness depends on how actively features are utilized and supported through guided classroom practices.

Abstract

Speaking English is a crucial part of learning English as a foreign language (EFL), yet many Indonesian students struggle with vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and fluency. While numerous studies have been conducted on mobile-assisted language learning (MALL), little is known about the precise function of TikTok videos as a self-help tool for speaking acquisition, particularly in studies that do not consider the user's perspective. This study examines how TikTok videos can help improve English speaking skills, with an emphasis on vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and fluency. Three TikTok videos were selected using a qualitative content study. The results indicate that these videos demonstrate authentic and spontaneous English speaking techniques that can help users improve their speaking skills through unstructured digital content. This implies that TikTok videos can be used as supplementary speaking examples for students learning English as a second language (EFL). Teachers and content producers can learn more about the educational potential of social media platforms from this research.
