Abstract

In the midst of the Covid-19 epidemic, many sectors are affected including education sectors. Teaching-learning activities are commanded to be held online, one of which is through Zoom Meeting application. The purposes of this research are to investigate the perceptions of lecturer and students towards online learning using Zoom meeting, to find out the advantages and disadvantages of online learning through Zoom meetings, and to figure out the students' participation during online learning through Zoom meetings. A descriptive qualitative method is used in this study. To collect the data, some techniques are used involving questionnaire, observation, and semi-structured interview. The questionnaire adapted from Roudlotun Nurul Laili and Muhammad Nasir (2020) and Minhas, et al (2021) was distributed to the fourth semester students and the lecturer of a private university in Sumedang. The findings show that the perceptions of students and lecturer about Zoom Meeting as an online learning application media are very diverse, but this Zoom Meeting application is arguably still effective for online learning. There are some advantages of online learning through Zoom Meeting, such as its flexibility to be used anywhere and on any type of gadget and its beneficial features that make easy for learning activities to take place. Apart from that, there are also disadvantages of using Zoom Meeting as a learning medium. The results show that it wastes a lot of internet data and the internet connection is not stable. The students participate more actively in a smaller scale of class or breakout room than in a large class during online learning.

Abstract

Textbook is learning material that can affect student’s perspective and thinking. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to several things such as gender equality contained in the textbook, either explicitly or implicitly. This paper concerns gender representation in two English textbooks assessed by the National Education Standards Agency and Cambridge University Pers. The framework of systemic functional linguistics proposed by Halliday & Matthiessen (2014) is utilized in this study. The research used a qualitative descriptive analysis focusing on the textual data obtained from the 10 selected texts related with the gender roles of the characters. The result indicates that male was found to be more frequently represented in roles of Participants, Process and Circumstantial. In this case, females are almost invisible and marginalized in both textbooks. Four types of transitivity were found in the first book and they represented male as characters whose activities related to business or industry with high desires, rational and a traveler whereas female represented as characters whose activities related to education and household. The second book contains six types of transitivity process, it is represented male as strength, attentive, talk much and female as a nurturing, beautiful, complaisant and cheerful. In summary, there is unequal representation between male and female in both textbooks.

Abstract

Abstract: Asynchronous online discussion board (AODB) has turned into a crucial tool for online and blended learning, as well as some in-class teaching contexts, in higher education (HE). Despite not being initially designed for teaching, it is now prominently featured as a learning autonomy promoter. This research is henceforth crucial due to the dearth of comprehensive assessments of how a technology enables lecturers to tote out the AODB-related activities. Employing technology affordance framework helped shape this study’s discoveries. Via the 16-week observations on the five lecturers’ AODBs in Canvas LMS, this study put together four supporting features, enabling this study to capture lecturers’ efforts to set up AODBs for pedagogical process. There are instruction pages, settings, search entries for authors, replies and likes. These features led this study to lump together the interview data from three lecturers into four affordances of Canvas-mediated AODB (consisting of collaboration, flexibility, knowledge record, and monitoring and assessment) and two constraints (mobile accessibility and usability for grading). The disclosure of Canvas-mediated AODBs’ affordances and constraints may introduce some brand-new details to the realm of discussion in education. Even so, further study scrutinizing various platforms and employing a variety of lecturer profiles is highly encouraged in order to result in a wider range of facts regarding AODB in HE.
