Abstract

This study aimedto analyze: (1) the application of “CLLS” in learning English reading comprehension among the students of year 8 ofthe MTs. Ma’arif Malangbong, (2) their perception toward the application of “CLLS”, (3) their achievement on reading comprehension using “CLLS”, (4) their problems in using “CLLS”, and (5) the solutions to improve their knowledge and skill of using “CLLS”. The analysis reveals that: (1) the application of “CLLS” in learning English reading comprehension among the students of year 8 of the MTs. Ma’arif Malangbong has run well, (2) the perception of students of year 8 of the MTs. Ma’arif Malangbong toward the application of “CLLS” was generally positive, only some students who show negative perception, (3) students’ achievement on reading comprehension using “CLLS” has generally increased moderately from 69,78 in 2013 to 72,20 in 2014 and to 74,60 that is in 2015, but this research also found that there were three students who had high achievement with negative perception on the application of the “CLLS”, (4) students’ problems in using “CLLS” involve: unstable emotion, lack of interaction, poor students' understanding, bad perception, the surroundings, lack of vocabulary mastery, lack of grammar knowledge, and lack of media used by teachers, and (5) the solutions to improve students’ knowledge and skill of using “CLLS” are: encouraging students to talk to teachers, and friends, (b) suggest students to have more often working in group outside of the schoolhours, (c) give enough explanation of the importance of English lessons, (d) explain that English is not a hard and difficult, (e) motivate students to continuously make serious effort in practicing English by creating better surroundings,(f) guide them to diligently read, (g) provide basic patterns that will be used, and (h) explain something through the media they have.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis persepsi siswa tentang lingkungan belajar bahasa dan mengetahui motivasi belajar siswa dalam meningkatkan keterampilan bahasa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif menggunakan angket sebagai instrumen dan dikonfirmasi melalui sesi wawancara. Data yang didapat dari angket dihitung secara manual dengan menghitung persentase dan skor rata-rata tanggapan siswa. Temuan pertama ditemukan bahwa terdapat 80,8% siswa memiliki persepsi baik dan 19,2% siswa memiliki persepsi buruk terhadap lingkungan belajar bahasa yang dikembangkan oleh asrama. Temuan kedua, berkaitan dengan motivasi siswa, ditemukan bahwa keterampilan menulis memiliki nilai rata-rata tertinggi 4,05 yang berarti, melalui program yang dikembangkan oleh asrama bahasa tersebut, siswa sangat termotivasi dan tertarik untuk menulis, diikuti oleh keterampilan berbicara dan membaca yang ditunjukkan dengan nilai rata-rata 3,87 dan 3,23. Sedangkan keterampilan mendengar berada pada posisi terbawah dengan mean score 3,09. Berdasarkan temuan tersebut, pihak asrama disarankan untuk mengembangkan program yang dapat melibatkan dan meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam mendengarkan dan membaca karena dianggap sebagai keterampilan reseptif untuk meningkatkan kualitas keterampilan produktif siswa.

Abstract

Motivation is one of crucial factors to teachers during their professional development. It is well established that motivation can positively increase their growth professionally. This study aimed to find out motivating factors between novice and experienced teacher. In this context, novice teacher is a teacher who has less than 5 years teaching experience while experienced teacher is a teacher who has more than 5 years’ experience. This research employed descriptive study, involving 4 teachers. A questionnaire and a semi structured interview were employed to gain the data. The data were analyzed descriptively. From the study, it is found that there are some similarities between novice and experienced teachers’ motivation. Moreover, it also found that taking postgraduate study gives a positive impact on their teaching practice. Indeed, it is recommended to give teachers more propelling on the importance of teacher need for their professional development.

Abstract

The research aimed at investigating types of scaffolding, the ways a teacher provides scaffolding, and benefits and challenges of scaffolding in teaching writing News Item text in tenth graders in a senior high school in Bandung. This research employed a qualitative research design, embracing characteristic of a case study. The data were obtained from non-participant classroom observation for six meetings, and one interview. The data collected from classroom observation and interview were transcribed and then analyzed by using framework of types of scaffolding (e.g Roehler and Cantlon (1997), Hammond (2001), Gibbons, (2002), and Walqui (2006)). The findings revealed that seven types of scaffolding were provided by the teacher   during teaching writing News Item text. The most intensive scaffolding was given in the Modeling stage, while scaffolding was removed in the Independent Writing stage. Regarding the benefits and challenges of providing scaffolding, this research found out the benefits of scaffolding such as to connect students’ prior knowledge with a new concept, to engage students, to minimize the level confusion of students, and to build students‟ self-confidence. Meanwhile, the challenges of providing scaffolding are the number of students in the classroom, time constraints, and demands on teacher.

Abstract

In the midst of the Covid-19 epidemic, many sectors are affected including education sectors. Teaching-learning activities are commanded to be held online, one of which is through Zoom Meeting application. The purposes of this research are to investigate the perceptions of lecturer and students towards online learning using Zoom meeting, to find out the advantages and disadvantages of online learning through Zoom meetings, and to figure out the students' participation during online learning through Zoom meetings. A descriptive qualitative method is used in this study. To collect the data, some techniques are used involving questionnaire, observation, and semi-structured interview. The questionnaire adapted from Roudlotun Nurul Laili and Muhammad Nasir (2020) and Minhas, et al (2021) was distributed to the fourth semester students and the lecturer of a private university in Sumedang. The findings show that the perceptions of students and lecturer about Zoom Meeting as an online learning application media are very diverse, but this Zoom Meeting application is arguably still effective for online learning. There are some advantages of online learning through Zoom Meeting, such as its flexibility to be used anywhere and on any type of gadget and its beneficial features that make easy for learning activities to take place. Apart from that, there are also disadvantages of using Zoom Meeting as a learning medium. The results show that it wastes a lot of internet data and the internet connection is not stable. The students participate more actively in a smaller scale of class or breakout room than in a large class during online learning.

Abstract

This study is aimed at examining the effectiveness of video recorded speaking task in improving students’ speaking skill. A quasi-experimental design is employed in this study. The population was the tenth grade students of a vocational school in Bandung. The sample was 30 students chosen through convenience sampling. The sample was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. Each group was given a pre-test at the beginning and a post-test at the end of the treatment.  The kind of speaking test was mini conversation test where the researcher gave the students topic, and gave them time to prepare talks, and then they performed it in front of the class. In this stage, the researcher assessed their speaking skill using the scoring rubric by Brown (2001) cited in Vidhiasi (2017). The result of pre-test score showed that there was no significant difference between two classes. Then, the result of analyzing gained score, generated from the difference between pre- and post-test, revealed that the score of experimental class was significantly higher than controlled class at significance level 0,05. It means that the use of video recorded speaking task was effective in improving students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

Pronunciation is a fundamental part of the language-learning process. In order to speak meaningfully in real-world conversations, students require to be able to pronounce word sound properly. This research aims to explore the pronunciation difficulties faced by students of a private senior high school in Bandung and to find out what factors influenced their difficulties in pronunciation. A descriptive qualitative design method is used in this study. To collect the data, three techniques were used including observation, interview, and questionnaires. The findings highlight several difficulties faced by the students, namely substitution errors, voicing errors, difficulties with consonant voiced and unvoiced, and challenges related to stress, rhythm, and intonation patterns are identified as common challenges. These errors and difficulties are influenced by both internal and external factors such as; students' native language, learning environment, types of teachers, and methods applied. The results of this study are essential because they provide language teachers with insight into the elements that influence the pronunciation of English as a foreign language, as well as the opportunity to reflect on their own learning and teaching methods

Abstract

Teaching reading is one of the skills that must be mastered in English which aims to get a meaning from a text. There are several kinds of methods and strategies that can be used to teach reading. This research focused on what strategies are used by teachers, the challenges that arise when using these strategies, and how teachers overcome these challenges. In this study, researcher used descriptive qualitative study with observation and interview data collection. This research was conducted at a private junior high school in Bandung and the participants are an English teacher and 28 students of grade 8. The results of this study are classified into 3 themes: strategies used by teachers in teaching reading, challenges faced when implementing strategies, and how the teacher to overcome these challenges. It was found that the teacher used 3 strategies in teaching reading, namely Question Answer Relationship, Scaffolding, and Reading Aloud. Teacher found several challenges, namely students' low communication skills, the lack of supported facility, and the lack of students' vocabularies, and student response to length of the text. The teacher overcomes some of these challenges, namely using a mix language of English and Bahasa, the teacher used a good approach when learning, and the teacher masters all the material so that when students ask questions the teacher can answer all the questions. For the further researcher will add more sources or references related to teaching reading, so the results of the research more complete.

Abstract

YouTube is not only a platform that individuals share, upload, comment on videos; but also teachers and educators can make practical and effective use of it to the best as great that students can have more an advantage or profit gained. This study aims to carry out a systematic or formal inquiry to discover and examine the facts of how active and distinguished YouTube can be in the educational process and how it is beneficial for language teachers to enhance the skills of students. The study exhibits different theoretical frameworks that equip the employment of technology to increase the learning/teaching process. In using multimedia, video clips used to develop teachers’ abilities for using technology in classrooms. The objectives of this research are to give knowledgeably and clear explanations about teaching students’ listening skills through English video. The researcher emerges a questionnaire and applies it to third-semester of college students, Ma’soem University to give confirmation and show the advantages of technology in the academic field. The paper investigates classes where computers can be utilized, and also appear the defiance that faces teachers and educators regarding this application. The researchers terminated that YouTube is a necessary tool in classrooms as it appeals to the attention of students and envolves their mentality and creativity. It also assists cover the materials exhaustive, especially language. YouTube leads the fun element into classes, through meet the interests of students. Equivalent findings have a remarkable impact on the learning process as the students will realize the educational environment more uplift and inspire. Besides, they notice the material presented worth studying, and this method, they would admire the attempt expend in explaining the information. The research aspires to be of worth to teachers for the operation of technology and students to have a superior apprehension of the materials extend.

Abstract

This study explores gender differences, reading habits, and preferences among undergraduate students studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at Ma'soem University, focusing on second, fourth, and eighth semesters. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to gather detailed data through comprehensive questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The sample included 32 participants, evenly distributed between male and female students. Key findings revealed a significant language preference gap, with 37.5% of female students preferring foreign language reading, compared to 18.8% of males who favored their native language. Regarding format, male students overwhelmingly preferred print books (93.8%), while females were more divided, with 75% favoring print and 25% choosing electronic formats. Both genders leaned towards fiction, though females showed a slightly stronger preference. Genre preferences also differed, with males favoring fantasy, mystery/thriller, and self-help, while females leaned towards fantasy, romance, and self-help. Access methods varied, with males more likely to use bookstores and lending networks, while females frequently used libraries and online platforms.
