Abstract

This research aims to analyze the classroom interaction in teaching learning process and the categories of anomalous exchanges that occur during classroom interaction in a fifth grade of an elementary school. The research employed a case study as a research methodology. Document analysis was used as data collection technique of this research. The documents analyzed were videos of teaching learning process in an elementary school in Bandung. The findings showed that the classroom interaction was dominated by Teacher Talk in which the teacher delivered information mostly through question and answer activities. Unanswered questions by the learners and no feedback from the teacher contributed to the occurrence of anomalous exchanges. In terms of anomalous exchanges, the findings revealed that defective exchanges and elliptical exchanges mostly occurred during the classroom interaction. Several factors which influenced the occurrence of these exchanges were the topic discussed, the wait-time, the types of teacher’s questions, and the non-conducive of learners’ situation.

Abstract

This article presents the outcome of a case study research which is particularly aimed at investigating dimensions of learner autonomy in EFL teaching-learning particularly in an English education program and situations under which learners learn autonomously. To collect the data, a questionnaire adapted from Murase (2009) was distributed to fourty first-year undergraduate students of a university in Bandung and interview was addressed to nine undergraduate learners. The findings showed that all dimensions of learner autonomy are found and each dimension is reflected in various degrees. The degree of technical and political dimensions of learner autonomy is in respect not as satisfactory as expected. However, the degree of learner autonomy in the psychological and socio-cultural dimension is high enough. There are four major aspects related to situations under which learners learn autonomously, including the subject matter, the lecturer, the time, and the challenging task. It is recommended for further research to investigate learner autonomy in a more specific context of class, for example learner autonomy in a speaking class, in order to get more in-depth data.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to describe how the teacher integrates technologies in blended learning and to analyze students’ perception and challenges in blended learning. The research was conducted in a private senior high school in Bandung and used a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected through interview and questionnaire. The findings show that the teacher had already integrated technologies to run the process of teaching and learning in the new normal era as a replacement of a face to face learning due to Covid-19 pandemic. In the blended learning, the teacher integrated the variety of technologies in teaching-learning activities, namely zoom meeting and WhatsApp group chatting for the synchronous learning and she utilized google classroom, screencast o matic screen recorder, viva video editor, YouTube, and Quizizz the synchronous learning. The students perceived  blended learning positively and determined that it is it is one of the effective ways of teaching. The biggest challenge overcome by the teacher is more time needed to learn and adapt to this new situation where they must employ technology in our educational culture. For the students, the stability of internet connection also becomes major obstacle in blended learning. Apart from that, blended learning can be an option applied in the learning process in the current pandemic era.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic had limited interactions and raised the potential of the increased use of gadgets. Those conditions might increase the prevalence of child speech delays considering the development of a child's speech requires two-way interactions. Speech delay in early childhood itself needs to be a concern for parents and the community because communication is one of the affecting aspects of a child's welfare. One of the components in the community that has a strategic role in reaching parents is the Family Welfare and Empowerment or known as PKK, team. Therefore, this Community Service was aimed to optimize the strategic role of Family Welfare and Empowerment (PKK) in preventing speech delays in early childhood. The activity was carried out in Padalarang District by involving twenty-four PKK team members and one PKK coordinator. The activity was carried out in two stages, including socialization and training. At the socialization stage, participants received exposure to the stages of language development according to age. At the training stage, participants received exposure and did hands-on practices related to the stimulation to improve early childhood language development. At the end of the activity, participants demonstrated an example of simple stimulation that can be given, such as reading aloud for children. The activity went well and was followed enthusiastically by the participants. Based on the interviews, participants gave positive responses. It is hoped that similar activities can be conducted continuously in the future.

Abstract

The research aimed at investigating types of scaffolding, the ways a teacher provides scaffolding, and benefits and challenges of scaffolding in teaching writing News Item text in tenth graders in a senior high school in Bandung. This research employed a qualitative research design, embracing characteristic of a case study. The data were obtained from non-participant classroom observation for six meetings, and one interview. The data collected from classroom observation and interview were transcribed and then analyzed by using framework of types of scaffolding (e.g Roehler and Cantlon (1997), Hammond (2001), Gibbons, (2002), and Walqui (2006)). The findings revealed that seven types of scaffolding were provided by the teacher   during teaching writing News Item text. The most intensive scaffolding was given in the Modeling stage, while scaffolding was removed in the Independent Writing stage. Regarding the benefits and challenges of providing scaffolding, this research found out the benefits of scaffolding such as to connect students’ prior knowledge with a new concept, to engage students, to minimize the level confusion of students, and to build students‟ self-confidence. Meanwhile, the challenges of providing scaffolding are the number of students in the classroom, time constraints, and demands on teacher.

Role-play technique provided some advantages. Firstly, it gave students opportunities to practice their speaking ability. Secondly, it increased students’ confidence to practice speaking in front of the classroom. Then, it improved students’ interests during the learning process. Fourth, it made students add more English vocabularies. Finally, students could communicate in English frequently with their friends so they could maintain their social relation with their peers. When using role-play technique, the students found difficulties related to pronunciation, word or sentence structure, lack of vocabulary, and memorizing the dialogue. The teacher found that role-play technique was time consuming, and it was hard to make sure the suitability of the material to the activities.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the significant different about video and audio in students’ listening practices. This research employed a comparative research design with two group pretest and post-test design. There were two variables: independent variable was video and audio and the dependent variable was the students’ listening practices. Population of this study research was 64 students and the samples were 30 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used listening test. Based on the finding of the research, the conclusions can be explained that the first and the second test has different topic and both test has different result of hypothesis testing, which in the first test that discussed the topic about some dialogues and conversations, the t-test value was 13.00 and t-table for n = 58 in level of significant α = 0.05 was 2.00. Because of t-test > t-table (13.15 > 2.00), it means that there is a significant difference between the students listening comprehension by using video and audio. Meanwhile in the second test which discussed the topic from cut movie, the t-test value was -10.15 and t-table was 2.00. Because of t-test < t-table (-10.15 < 2.00), it means that there is not a significant difference between the students listening comprehension by using video and audio. The result of this research shows that video is a better media than audio to be applied on student listening comprehension, therefore the implementation of this research expects the teachers/ lecturers to use video as learning media in teaching listening especially in listening comprehension.

Abstract

This research focuses on learning vocabulary to young learners through YouTube videos and is categorized as descriptive-qualitative method using observation and interviews. This research was conducted at Al-Ma'soem Elementary School which involved 32 young learners and an English teacher. The results of this study were classified into 3 themes; the characteristics of YouTube videos, the advantages of using YouTube videos and the problems faced by teachers in using YouTube videos. It was found that all young learners at Al-Ma'soem Elementary School grade 1 were involved in learning vocabulary through YouTube videos. These young learners gave a positive response during the learning activities because they preferred learning English, especially learning vocabulary by using videos on YouTube. Related to the last findings, the lack of the teacher in preparing a suitable video and the unstable internet connection are considered as problems experienced by the teacher in using the videos on YouTube. Additionally, the use of YouTube videos to learn vocabulary in English learning is quite effective, however, the teachers are suggested to wisely choose the characteristics of videos that are suitable for young learners and find out the best solution to overcome the problems appeared.
