Abstract

The biofloc system is a solution for intensive cultivation activities. This is because in biofloc system the are heterotrophic bacteria that can reuse waste from cultured organisms so as to improve water quality. However, the biofloc system can cause high nitrite production if the dissolved oxygen concentration in the water is below the optimum value. High nitrite concentrations can cause brown nitrite, causing fish to suffocate even though the oxygen concentration in the water is sufficient. Polyculture can be a solution to reduce the concentration of biofloc so that brown nitrite can be prevented. Therefore, a research was conducted with the aim of knowing the effect of the composition of the best polyculture biota in order to produce high cultivation performance. The ratio of tilapia and catfish used included 80% catfish and 20% tilapia fish (treatment A), 70% catfish and 30% tilapia fish (treatment B), 60% catfish and 40% tilapia ( treatment C), and 100% catfish (treatment D). Maintenance is carried out for 60 days where feeding is done on a restricted basis. The results of the research carried out showed that the best FCR, ADG and SR were in treatment C with consecutive values of 1.27 ± 0.02 (FCR), 1.4 g/day (ADG) on the last maintenance day, 95.11 ± 1.02% (SR). This study shows that the performance of cultivation in biofloc systems in polyculture is better than monoculture.

Abstract

ABSTRACT In this study, a commercial product of natural silicates and yeast (NSY) and saponins from Yucca schidigera and Quillaja saponaria plants (SBP) were used to evaluate their nutritional effects on growth and health status of pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. Four isonitrogenous and iso-lipidic experimental diets were formulated to contain 0%, 0.3% NSY, 0.2% SBP and 0.6% NSY. After 60 days, shrimp were sampled and standard haemato-immunological parameters were measured. The growth performances of shrimp were significantly affected by the dietary inclusion of NSY and SBP, whereas the inclusion of NSY and SBP provide a better growth compared to the control group. Additionally, the inclusion of NSY and SBP significantly enhance the total haemocytes count and lysozyme activity in shrimp compared to control. Therefore, NSY and SBP can be regarded as the functional ingredients in shrimp diet to improve the growth and non-specific immune function of shrimp.

Abstract

A problem that often occurred for the actor of catfish cultivation was an indication of smelly mud/dirt/muddy taste (off-flavors). Off-flavors were identified from chemical geosmin compound (GSM) and 2-Methyl Iso-borneol (MIB) produced by Cyanophyceae (Blue Green Algae or BGA) and actinomycetes. This soil odor compounds was soluble in water, into the body of fish through the gill and forwarded to the fatty tissue of fish, so that the fish meat was finally mud-smelly/dirt/musty. Probiotics was an attempt to reduce the compounds that caused off-flavors. The use of probiotics containing Bacillus spp. on feed could degrade organic matter through bioremediation digestive organs and environmental fish farming to minimize the accumulation of organic matter. The reduced of organic matter in waters on total organic odor, has impacted on the percentage of BGA as cause of mud-smelly in waters, especially for species Oscillatoria Sp. In this study, the researchers used Bacillus spp. to treat 10 ml/kg and 20 ml/kg of feed that can indirectly lower the percentage of BGA, Oscillatoria population Sp. and off-flavor in catfish meat as compared to controls.
