Abstract

The development of sustainable and economically sound practical diet in the coming years will depend on the reduction of fish meal and the increased inclusion of sustainable protein sources. Over the years, our laboratory has systematically reduced the inclusion levels of fish meal and other animal protein sources by using a range of alternative plant-protein sources. These diets may be further improved through the use of specialized proteins, supplements for limiting amino acids, enzyme and attractants. Good success has been seen with corn protein concentrates, advanced processing products of soybean meal, such as soy protein concentrates and advanced soy product (enzyme treated or fermented soy). Based on the results of our research, the proportion of animal meal can be reduced to 12 % in our current formulations without any detrimental effects on pompano performance and nutrient retention. In addition, the use of fermented soy or the combination of enzyme-treated soy with proper inclusion level of squid hydrolysates as an attractant has proven to improve the functional properties of SBM and lead to better liver and intestine condition of pompano. Considering the sizeable body of knowledge concerning nutrition for Florida pompano, all information taken from this species could be used as the starting point to develop better feed formulations for Silver pompano production in Indonesia.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This experiment was aimed to investigate the effects of protein hydrolysates on growth performance and immune response of the Asian sea bass Lates calcarifer Bloch. The experiment was performed in two different rearing period, namely nursery and grow out by using completely randomized design. Experimental fish were fed with three types of diets and each treatment was repeated three times: a local commercial diet (control), coated or not, with 2%, and 3% of protein hydrolysates. Challenge test was performed with Vibrio parahaemolyticus at a density of 105 sel/mL by using immersion method. The results showed that the the neutrofil, leukocyte and monocyte of the fish fed on protein hydrolisates were significantly higher than those non-supplemented group (P<0.05). Meanwhile, the lymphocyte on the fish treated with hydrolisates showed no difference amongst treatments (P<0.05). The growth performance of Asian sea bass fed on protein hydrolisates significantly improved the total fish weight (g), relative weight gain, specific growth rate, final weight (g) and final length (cm) in comparison to the control (P<0.05) both at nursery and grow out phase. Higher survival both at the nursery and grow out phase were obtained by the group fed with 3% protein hydrolisates: 97.28±0.18% and 86.0±4.32%. Followed with 2% supplementation level 96.75±0.28% and 78.4±7.7%. The lowest survival was shown by the control group with 93.65±0.13% and 20.1±21.1% from nursery and grow-out phase respectively. Results of challenged test showed that the protein hydrolisates supplementation was able to improve the post-challenged survival and resistency of Asian sea bass against V. parahaemolyticus infection. Fish treated with 3% protein hydrolisates generated higher survival 78,33±2,89%, followed by treatment 2% 73,33±5,77%, and control 31,67±7,64% after five days post immersion (P<0.05). Abstract

Growth performance, survival rate, productivity, and carcass analysis were examined in the whole grow-out production system for Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei fed four commercial diets over 15 weeks. Shrimp were held in twelve hapas nets with a size of 2 x 2 x 1 m and installed within the commercial ponds. The shrimp were stocked with the density of 100 shrimp m-2 per net in a completely randomized design (CRD). All feed used in this study was characterized with high protein levels within the range of 40 – 42% labeled as HP A and B; and medium protein levels (30 – 35%), labeled as MP A and B. Based on the proximate and nutritional profile analysis of the diet, the nutritional profile of HP B, MP A and MP B written on the feed bags showed an inconsistent results compared to the results of the test.  Shrimp fed the highest protein level had higher final body weight; feed conversion ratio, thermal growth coefficient, survival rate and average daily growth compared to MP B. Shrimp fed higher protein level also exhibited the lowest feed conversion ratio compared to the group of shrimp fed with medium protein. The results obtained in this study indicated that with small difference in growth rates, especially between HP groups compared with MP A, there is still a chance to re-formulate the diet to produce a cost-effective diet that still fulfill the specific nutrient requirement of the shrimp. Feed did not influence the nutritional deposition of the whole body of shrimp, but it seemed due to the inappropriate drying techniques Keywords: Protein level, growth, carcass, Litopenaeus vannamei, specific nutrient

Abstract

The production efficiency of striped catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus is very dependent on the quality of feed, which can increase the fish’s growth rate and health condition. Thus, the aimed of this study was to investigate the effects of different levels of Oregano Essential Oil (OEO) contained with thymol and carvacrol, at the concentration level of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4% OEO, which is applied using top-dressing method and included in feed formulation on the growth rate, body composition, digestive health and resistance of striped catfish P. hypophthalmus against the pathogenic bacteria Aeromonas hydrophila. The results of growth trials using top-dressing method for 122 days using formulated feed method for 70 days showed that the application of OEO yielded better growth than the control, with 0.2% OEO providing better growth performance than 0.1 and 0.4% OEO. The body composition analysis results also showed a better level of nutrient absorption in fish fed the OEO-based diet compared to the control. For the number of bacteria in the digestive tract, OEO supplementation can also significantly reduce the number of bacteria compared to fish-fed control feed. The challenge test results after the fish were given treatment feed for 24 days showed that the application of 0.1% OEO provided better protection against Aeromonas hydrophila. However, there was no significant difference with 0.2% OEO. The application of 0.2% OEO can be recommended to increase the efficiency and productivity of catfish cultivation.

Abstract

Seaweeds is a fishery commodity that has economic value and generates quite a large amount of foreign exchange. However, in its development, production fluctuated and not all marine locations could maintain seaweed throughout the year. Relatively low production costs and a market that is available at any time. The purpose of this study was to analyze the productivity and development strategies for Euchema cotonii grass cultivation in Banten Bay. Changes in spatial planning, land conversion, industrial activities in the western and eastern parts, waste disposal through the river in this section and the excavation of sand mines have made the bay very vulnerable to the environment. The location of this activity is the coast and waters around the island of  Banten Bay. The method of data collection is the measurement of water quality parameters in the field, surveys, interviews, discussions and limited participation in seaweed cultivation locations. The data analysis method is descriptive and uses the SWOT tool (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats) and uses SPSS version 25, excel and to assess sustainability using raphfish. Research results show. Water quality conditions are in accordance with the growth of seaweed. Production starting in 1987 fluctuated and conditions were stagnant in the last 3 years. The recommended strategy for increasing production is increasing grass productivity through expanding areas that have mapped potential and land suitability with applied technology, competent human resources, using superior seeds and reducing environmental pollution by industry and sand mining. KEYWORDS: Seaweed; Banten Bay; Environmental pollution; Serang.
