Abstract

This activity aims to provide guidance, training, and mentoring to help resolve problems faced by partners, including high operational costs of fish farming because of the high cost of factory-made pellets, limited understanding and knowledge of fish farming techniques, and limited access to business capital in groups of freshwater fish farming in village of Jerukagung Srumbung Magelang. In this activity, the use of semi-intensive farming technology was introduced and the introduction of mixer and fish pellet feed making machines technology were able to produce pellets independently for groups of fish farmers. Semi-intensive system farming techniques are proven to be able to increase productivity at a low cost to replace the conventional methods that have been done so far. The service program was completed in eight months, divided into three stages consisting of competency enhancement, technology development, and partnership development. The use of semi-intensive farming technology by applying good pond water maintenance techniques, selecting the right seeds, and optimal feeding techniques has been shown to increase fish production. High feed costs during the enlargement process which can reach 75% of the total cost can be replaced using pellet feed has made by group using local raw materials that are easily available in the surrounding area or environment, so as to reduce feed costs by up to 25%.

Abstract

The amount of domestic waste generation is an urgent problem in many places in Indonesia. Managing fruit waste into biogas is one solution to the waste problem and also contributes to reducing the energy crisis. Some fruits contain inhibitors of methanogenic performance. Oranges contain limonene in addition to their acidity properties. Tannins in apples are also inhibitors of methanogens. Another group of microbes, namely acidogens and acetogens in the digester, are less sensitive to acid conditions and inhibitors. Special treatment is needed considering the sensitivity of methanogens to inhibitors originating from fruit waste. The strategy offered is to carry out the initial process of biodigester operation with the aim of maintaining the stability of growth and population of various microbial groups as reflected in the pH of the effluent, biogas volume and content of methane, TS and VS of both feed and biodigester effluent. The biodigester was designed semi-continuously on a pilot scale with an effective slurry volume of 16 liters with a loading rate of 40 kg/(m3.day). The feed was given at 6%TS. The composition of the substrate consists of a mixture of citrus fruits, apples and melons and mixed with cow dung in a certain ratio. The percentage of fruit substrate is increased gradually to give time for the microbial group in the biodigester to adapt to changes in inhibitor levels from fruit waste. Monitoring was conducted on pH, daily volume of biogas and methane levels, TS and VS of feed and effluent reflecting the performance of acidogen, acetogen and methanogen microbes. The average methane level was 62.15% and the highest was 75.63% in the S1 feed composition. The acclimatization time for each feed composition period varied between 14 to 65 days. Up to the composition of the fruit mixture of 35% (S5) or equivalent to a limonene content of 44.44 ppm, the pH stability parameter was depressed at a low value of 6.7.

Abstract

Vinasse utilization as biogas forming substrate requires special handling because of it’s acidic state which is inhibitor to methanogens. At start-up, the performance of microbial group should be in state of equilibrium between methanogens and non-methanogens. This is attempted by adding inhibitor substrates incrementally. Start-up conduct in semi continue process with vinasse dry base composition 0% (S0), 50% (S1), 75% (S2), 90% (S3) up to 100% (S4). Biodigester loading rate is 40 kg/(m3/hari) with 8 litre effective slurry volume. Substrat is fed at 6,5% TS. The best pH stability obtained on S2 feed composition which is 6.3 for eleven consecutive days. This reflects the balance of methanogen and non-methanogenic microbes performance. The highest average daily biogas production was achieved at feed composition S3 of 3780mL even though the average pH tended to decrease to 6.18. At S4, pH and average biogas volume is decreased significanly to 5.9 and 1932mL.
