Abstract

Women are generally more susceptible to dental and oral diseases, one of which is gum inflammation (gingivitis), caused by bacterial plaque infection. Untreated gingivitis in adolescents can lead to further complications in the periodontal tissues. Gingivitis treatment can be carried out by gargling with traditional ingredients that are safe for adolescents and do not cause harmful side effects. One natural traditional ingredient that can be used is a turmeric solution mouthwash, which contains antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. This study aims to determine the changes in the gingival index of respondents suffering from gingivitis after gargling with turmeric solution at the Department of Dental Health, Poltekkes Kemenkes Padang. The research employed a quasi-experimental method by administering a turmeric solution gargle to respondents with gingivitis, and then examining their gingival index after three days of use. The study population consisted of all students at the Department of Dental Health, Poltekkes Kemenkes Padang. The sample was taken from students in the department using a judgement sampling technique. Data were analysed using a paired t-test. The results showed that before gargling with turmeric solution, the most common gingival index categories among respondents were moderate and severe (each 44.4%), whereas after gargling, the majority fell into the mild category (55.5%). The paired t-test yielded a p-value of 0.001. In conclusion, there is a significant effect of gargling turmeric solution on gingival index in patients with gingivitis. It is recommended for further research to research the optimal formulation and concentration of turmeric solution, as well as the safety of its long-term use for adolescents and other age groups.

Abstract

Oral hygiene is an indicator of oral and dental health which can be assessed based on the presence or absence of organic deposits, such as pellicle, materia alba (dental deposit), food residue, calculus, and dental plaque. Plaque is the cause of tooth decay among the world's population. Plaque on the tooth surface can be used as an indicator of oral hygiene. Poor cleaning can lead to stickier plaque and tartar after calcification. The thin plaque is almost the same as the color of the teeth, so that plaque cannot be seen with the naked eye. The presence of plaque that is formed from contact with oral fluids can be detected by using certain dye. This study aims to determine the Effectiveness of Purple Sweet Potato Extract and Disclosing substance for Plaque Identification among the children in Aisyah Orphanage, Tilatang Kamang Sub-District, Agam District. This was a quasi-experimental study with a post-test-only design. The samples of this study were 30 children at Aisyah Orphanage, Tilatang Kamang Sub-District, Agam District, with the inclusion criteria of children with permanent teeth and index teeth. The samples were selected through total sampling technique. The results showed that after applying purple sweet potato extract to the children at Aisyah Orphanage in Bukittinggi City, most of them had the Patient Hygiene Performance index (PHP) in the moderate criteria (50%). Furthermore, after applying disclosing substances to the children at Aisyah Orphanage in Bukittinggi City, most of them had the PHP index in the poor criteria (56.7%). The t-test independent statistical test results obtained a p-value of 0.000 (p <0.005), indicating a significant difference between sweet potato extract and disclosing substance. Disclosing substance was more effective than purple sweet potato extract in identifying plaque on the tooth surface. Further study is recommended to apply purple sweet potato extract with different concentrations as an alternative ingredient to identify plaque on the tooth surface.

Abstract

The main cause of caries and periodontal disease is plaque. Plaque can be removed by brushing your teeth. Children with mental disabilities or mental retardation have limitations in functioning themselves and adjusting to the environment. The prevalence of caries is 30% higher than normal children and poor oral hygiene is a problem faced by mentally retarded children. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of tooth brushing education on reducing plaque index (Patient Hygiene Performance Index) in mentally retarded children at SLB N 02 Padang. The research design used was a Pre- Experimental One Group Pre and Posttest design with an initial plaque index examination (pretest) and a plaque index examination after brushing education (posttest), with a population of 86 people, the sampling technique was purposive sampling, obtained a sample of 45 person. The study was conducted at SLB N 02 Padang in 2019. The results showed a higher difference in the PHP index, namely for moderate mental retardation at 1.3 while the difference in numbers for mild mental retardation was 1.28. Data analysis using statistical tests with paired sample t-test showed that there was a significant difference between the PHP index before and after education about brushing teeth in children with mild and moderate mental retardation. It is recommended to respondents to always apply the brushing technique that has been given, and brush their teeth at least twice a day, ie in the morning after breakfast and at night before going to bed and guide the mentally retarded children one by one when brushing their teeth.
