Abstract

Mouthwash is a solution used to clean the oral cavity to eliminate bacteria. Green and red betel leaves are believed to contain higher phenol content, which can inhibit bacterial activity. The purpose of this study is to determine the difference in effectiveness of a mixture of green and red betel leaf decoction as a mouthwash in reducing bacterial counts and plaque scores. This research is a quasi-experiment with a pretest and posttest controlled group design. The population consists of students from the Dental Nursing Department using purposive sampling technique, totaling 69 students divided into three groups, each with 23 samples using green betel leaf, red betel leaf, and a mixture of both decoctions as mouthwash. Effectiveness was tested with paired t-test, while differences were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. The results showed that mouthwash with green betel leaf, red betel leaf, and a mixture of both decoctions were effective in reducing bacterial colonies and plaque on teeth. There were significant differences in reducing bacterial colonies among the three types of decoctions, but no differences in reducing plaque scores. The use of mouthwash from betel leaf decoctions is a good protective measure with easily obtainable and applicable materials for the community to avoid the use of chemical substances.

Abstract

Women are generally more susceptible to dental and oral diseases, one of which is gum inflammation (gingivitis), caused by bacterial plaque infection. Untreated gingivitis in adolescents can lead to further complications in the periodontal tissues. Gingivitis treatment can be carried out by gargling with traditional ingredients that are safe for adolescents and do not cause harmful side effects. One natural traditional ingredient that can be used is a turmeric solution mouthwash, which contains antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. This study aims to determine the changes in the gingival index of respondents suffering from gingivitis after gargling with turmeric solution at the Department of Dental Health, Poltekkes Kemenkes Padang. The research employed a quasi-experimental method by administering a turmeric solution gargle to respondents with gingivitis, and then examining their gingival index after three days of use. The study population consisted of all students at the Department of Dental Health, Poltekkes Kemenkes Padang. The sample was taken from students in the department using a judgement sampling technique. Data were analysed using a paired t-test. The results showed that before gargling with turmeric solution, the most common gingival index categories among respondents were moderate and severe (each 44.4%), whereas after gargling, the majority fell into the mild category (55.5%). The paired t-test yielded a p-value of 0.001. In conclusion, there is a significant effect of gargling turmeric solution on gingival index in patients with gingivitis. It is recommended for further research to research the optimal formulation and concentration of turmeric solution, as well as the safety of its long-term use for adolescents and other age groups.

Abstract

School-aged children are a group that is vulnerable to dental and oral health problems. Dental and oral health is important to maintain from an early age to prevent disorders of the teeth and their supporting tissues, the results of research at SDN 05 Pontianak Utara showed that students' knowledge, attitudes, and behavior were still very low. The initial survey found that only 30% of students knew the right time to brush their teeth, 93% did not know when to replace their toothbrush, and 80% did not know the importance of regular dental check-ups, this study aims to determine whether health promotion using leaflet media can improve students' knowledge about how to maintain dental and oral health. This study used a pre-experimental method with a one group pretest-posttest design. The number of respondents was 90 5th grade students of SDN 05 Pontianak Utara who were selected using a total sampling technique. The research instrument was a negative question questionnaire consisting of 15 multiple-choice questions. The questionnaire was given twice, namely before (pretest) and after (posttest) the health promotion was carried out. The results of this study showed a significant increase in students' knowledge before health promotion with leaflet media, students' knowledge was in the poor knowledge category of 63 students (70%) after health promotion with leaflet media, students' knowledge was in the good category of 73 students (81%). The conclusion of this study is that the level of students' knowledge after being given health promotion became good and leaflet media proved effective in increasing the knowledge of fifth grade students of SDN 05 North Pontianak about how to maintain dental and oral health

Abstract

The most common oral disease in Indonesia is dental cavities, especially common in school-age children due to their tendency to favor sweet and sticky foods that can cause dental caries. This study aims to identify the relationship between the frequency of cariogenic food consumption and the DMF-T index in 12-year-old children at SDN 05 Batu Taba, Ampek Angkek District, Agam Regency in 2023. This type of research is an analytic study with a cross-sectional design. The study population included 47 respondents aged 12 years from SDN 05 Batu Taba. The research methods involved interviews regarding the frequency of cariogenic food consumption and DMF-T index examination. Data analysis involved univariate and bivariate analysis, with the chi-square test used for bivariate analysis. The results showed that the frequency distribution of cariogenic food consumption was categorized as low 63.8%, medium 19.1%, high 17.0%, and very high 0%. The frequency distribution of dental caries in the good category reached 42.6%, while the bad category reached 57.4%. The statistical test results showed a ρ value of 0.016 <0.005. The conclusion of this study is that there is a significant relationship between the frequency of cariogenic food consumption and the DMF-T index in 12-year-old children at SDN 05 Batu Taba, Ampek Angkek District, Agam Regency. It is recommended to intensify the longitudinal study to better understand the behavioral changes of cariogenic food consumption frequency and its impact on DMF-T index over time.

Abstract

Education is a deliberate effort to influence individuals or groups to achieve optimal learning objectives. In dental health, the demonstration method is used to teach proper toothbrushing techniques for removing plaque. However, the effectiveness of this method can be influenced by the patient's awareness of plaque presence, which can be enhanced through disclosing solutions as educational tools. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of plaque reduction using the demonstration method with and without disclosing solutions. The study employed a pre-experimental design with a pre-post observational approach and statistical analysis using paired t-tests and independent t-tests. The research subjects consisted of 60 elementary school students from SDN 37, selected through purposive sampling. The paired t-test results indicated a significant difference in plaque index before and after education (p<0.05). However, the independent t-test showed no significant difference between the groups using disclosing solutions and those without (p>0.05). In conclusion, the demonstration method is effective in reducing plaque among students, both with and without disclosing solutions, although there is no significant difference in effectiveness between the two methods
