Abstract

Indonesia is the world's largest producer and catcher of sharks and rays (Chondrichthyans class). Saw Stingrays (Pristis spp.) have full protection status. Anoxypristis cuspidata is a type of Saw Stingray which is predominantly caught as bycatch from nets and fishing gear by traditional fishermen operating around the waters of Merauke, Papua. One of the determinants of the success of saw stingray conservation is human resources which can be seen from their knowledge and perspective on the existence of saw stingrays. This study aims to determine the perspective of Wendu coastal fishermen on the existence of saw stingrays. This research was conducted in June 2021-March 2022. There were 92 samples in this study, using the non-probability sampling method. The type of non-probability sampling used in this study is purposive sampling. The data analysis technique was carried out using the qualitative data analysis model of Miles and Huberman. Most of the respondents saw saw stingrays 1-2 times in their lifetime. According to the perspective of Wendu coastal fishermen, the number of saw rays decreased and the size of the saw rays decreased. Most still think that saw stingrays can be used either for consumption or for sale.

Abstract

A river basin is a unified water resources management area in one or more river basins. The Maro River is an example of a river in the administrative area of Merauke Regency and is an economically important fish commodity fishing area. The aim of this research is to determine the structure of fish communities and distribution patterns of fish caught in the Maro River Basin, Merauke Regency. This research was conducted in May 2021 using a purposive sampling method. Fish samples were taken from fishermen's catches. Then, the caught fish are identified. There were 13 types of fish that were successfully analyzed, including: Channa striata, Oreochromis niloticus, Oreochromis mossambicus, Lates calcalifer, Hexanematichthys sagor, Anabas testudineus, Toxotes chataerus, Plotosus papuensis, Thryssa scratchleyi, Megalops cyprinoides, Kurtus gulliveri, Clarias batracus and Glossogabius sp. The fish community structure in Kwell and Toray villages found that the diversity index was in the medium category with a value in Kwell village of 2.21 and Toray village of 2.06. Meanwhile, the dominance index in both villages has a dominance index (D') in the low category, namely 0.16. Meanwhile, the uniformity index (E') in Kwell and Toray villages is 2.54 and 2.40 respectively, which is in the high category, resulting in a stable community. Furthermore, the distribution pattern of fish in each village has a random and clustered distribution pattern

Abstract

Mangroves are plants that live in tidal or interface areas between terrestrial and marine ecosystems in tropical and subtropical regions. Mangrove ecosystem is one of the coastal ecosystems that have a very important role, especially for organisms, namely as a supplier of nutrients produced by mangrove litter. An observation regarding litter productivity is still limited in Papua, especially in the city of Merauke. The method used in this study is the transect method, using 3 (three) transects. Mangrove litter is taken by using a litter trap container placed under the mangrove tree. The results obtained from litter production in each transect are as follows transect 1 of 167.8 g/m²/Month, Transect 2 of 65.4 g/m²/Month, and Transect 60 g/m²/Month while density mangrove in each transect 1 transect has a higher tree density value of 65 Ind/ m² while in Transect 2 it has a total litter production of 32 Ind / m² and the mangrove density value in Transect 3 is lower compared to stations 1 and 2 which are 25 Ind/m².

Abstract

One solution to the problem of mangrove degradation faced by the Payum Beach community is to provide training and assistance in mangrove management and utilization. Community participation in mangrove management can be interpreted as the active involvement of the community in every stage of mangrove area management. The training and assistance program is aimed at the local community of Payum Beach, especially women, with a total of 40 participants interested in the program being carried out. Training is carried out through lectures, discussions, and direct practice, while assistance is carried out to ensure the application of the techniques taught. Mangrove management training is through nurseries and making seed houses, while utilization is through mangrove leaf ecoprint training. The results show that this ecoprint and mangrove nursery training has proven effective in increasing the knowledge and skills of participants in various aspects, with an average increase in percentage above 80%, namely 83%. These results indicate the success of the training in empowering local Papuan communities and providing new insights that can be applied in economic activities and environmental conservation, especially in mangrove nurseries and making ecoprint products.
