Abstract

Urban built cultural heritage are currently facing a great threat from development pressure particularly in developing countries as a result of population growth, urban development, as well as economic growth, no exception to Indonesia. Jakarta and Bandung as one of the most established and fast growing metropolitan in Indonesia in terms of population and economy are struggling to conserve their urban built cultural heritage. Although national law have encourage cultural heritage conservation management in maintaining the existence of these historic residential neighborhood areas, both cities are still gradually suffering losses of distinctive character and appearance. Whether through process of adaptive reuse, renovations, and even replacement, these changes detract from the townscape value of these invaluable urban assets. This problem is found quite evident throughout Jakarta and Bandung. This paper summarizes the findings of research carried out into the gap between spatial planning regulations and practice of two different Indonesian cities in relation to the urban heritage conservation of two historical residential corridors in Senopati Street - Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta and Progo Street, Bandung. It reviews and compares the effectiveness of different spatial planning regulations approaches of respective cities on delivering the urban heritage conservation outcomes in attempt to find a solution and establish as well as indicate ways of improving the cultural heritage regulations in Indonesia. The research explores the land use transformation and changes of urban built heritage character and appearance of historical residential neighborhood areas along both observed corridors and questions the extent of these transformation and changes occurred in both locations. The research presents a method for measuring changes of land use and physical character in the historic built environment and descriptive analyses factors that might affect the loss of built heritage character in both areas

Abstract

Since the 1970s, street hawkers have considered Malioboro an icon of the city of Yogyakarta. Malioboro has become increasingly crowded. Seeing this condition, a decision was made to relocate the street hawkers from the Malioboro corridor. This decision has pros and cons; some consider street hawkers to be a place for creativity, a sector that greatly affects the level of crowds and is the main attraction for the Malioboro area. However, few people consider it a barrier to the original face of the Malioboro corridor. Urban vitality is an important aspect of increasing visitor interest; it relates to comfort, security, safety, and fun as the main indicators. This study aims to examine the impact of the relocation decision on the vitality of Malioboro as a tourist area. Using qualitative methods, this study compared the reality through field surveys and online questionnaires that had been distributed for one week to a total of 61 respondents who had ever visited Malioboro with the theory of urban vitality and urban tourism precincts. To get a conclusion on whether the Yogyakarta city government’s decision to relocate the street hawkers from Malioboro Street can maintain or even reduce Malioboro’s urban vitality.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The Benteng Kuto Besak (BKB) waterfront is a historic public space along the Musi River that integrates heritage, recreational, cultural, and commercial functions. This study assesses the applicability of Kriken’s urban design principles to formulate site-specific directions for sustainable management of the BKB waterfront heritage area. A qualitative descriptive case study approach was employed using field observations, photographic documentation, brief informal field interviews, and document analysis, including the Palembang Spatial Plan (RTRW) and Government Regulation No. 38 of 2011. Kriken’s nine principles (sustainability, accessibility, diversity, open space, compatibility, incentives, adaptability, density, and identity) served as the analytical framework for examining spatial conditions, activities, potentials, and problems. The findings reveal challenges related to limited green infrastructure, pedestrian and vehicular conflicts, informal commercial activities, road conditions, waste management, and heritage compatibility. Diversity is reflected primarily through the variety of functions, activities, and user choices rather than architectural stylistic variation. The resulting design directions emphasize pedestrian continuity, flexible open space management, heritage compatible interventions, improved vegetation and environmental management, organized vendor zones, and preservation of visual and cultural identity. The study demonstrates that Kriken’s framework can be adapted to formulate site-specific urban design directions for historic waterfront areas in Indonesia.
