Abstract

Academic writing is one of important skill to have students in tertiary education, including students of Information Technology Diploma. Using Systemic Functional Linguistics Genre Pedagogy (SFL GP), the students report writings are investigated, his research aims at investigating how students comprehend SFL GP in their report writing and find out the relationship between students’ knowledge of SFL GP with their language proficiency. The texts are analyzed using the genre division by Rose and Martin. The results of the analysis will be used to investigate if the knowledge of genre writing for technology-based students is related to their language proficiency. This research contributes to better use of genre pedagogy for science students, more specifically, students of Information Technology.

Abstract

This study aims at evaluating an English test as part of entrance test in STAN, a government-affiliated college in Indonesia. STAN EPT has four main sections in the test including Structure and Written Expression, Cloze Question, Error Recognition and Reading Comprehension. Using five criteria by Brown & Abeywickrama (2010), the test is evaluated in terms of its practicality, reliability, validity, washback and authenticity. The result indicated that the test has high practicability with all of questions provided in multiple choices. Some elements of reliability and validity are also covered in this test. Yet, the evaluation also showed that washback and authenticity are not covered in STAN EPT. Key words: STAN EPT, English test, test evaluation

Abstract

Del-Gong Kids Corner App is a mobile-based app that provides English kids' stories in audio format. The community service project aims to socialize the Del-Gong app to users, especially in Desa Lumban Dolok as the target community, so the community has a better understanding of using the application for learning and communicating in English through the books available in the app. Methods used to conduct this community service project are by developing the materials and the application. The developed application is then checked for its functions and interface before being finalized and released to the public. Socialization impacts the better understanding of the community regarding the app's use for learning, including the available features. During the socialization, participants gave valuable feedback regarding the app and its functions. The feedback is then used for the improvement of the app. The output of the Del-Gong app is an alternative to learning English and to help promote the reading interest of the community, especially children. --- Aplikasi Del-Gong Kids Corner merupakan sebuah aplikasi berbasis mobile. Aplikasi ini menyediakan cerita-cerita anak dalam bahasa Inggris dalam bentuk audio. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk mensosialisasikan penggunaan aplikasi kepada masyarakat di Desa Lumban Dolok, sehingga peserta memiliki pemahaman yang baik terkait pemanfaatan aplikasi untuk pembelajaran dan peningkatan kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris melalui buku-buku cerita yang tersedia yang mudah di akses melalui aplikasi Del-Gong. Metode dalam pelaksanaan pengabdian ini adalah dengan pembuatan materi aplikasi dan pembangunan aplikasi. Setelah aplikasi dibangun, aplikasi di ujicobakan dan difinalisasi kembali sebelum disosialisasikan ke khalayak sasaran. Hasil dari pelaksanaan sosialisasi aplikasi Del-Gong adalah peningkatan pengetahuan dan pemahaman peserta terkait penggunaan aplikasi Del-Gong, termasuk fitur – fitur yang tersedia pada aplikasi. Respons dari peserta terkait aplikasi utamanya kesesuaikan dalam tampilan aplikasi dan fungsi – fungsi yang tersedia juga diperoleh sebagai hasil dari sosialisasi yang digunakan untuk penyempurnaan aplikasi. Luaran dari aplikasi ini dapat menjadi alternatif dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dan membantu meningkatkan minat membaca anak-anak.

Abstract

The data collection of room loans, inventory, and books is an important activity as a means of documentation at the language laboratory of Del Institute of Technology. Using manual process of the borrowing and data collection, possibility of data loss may occur. Moreover, it is also laborious and inefficient in terms of time. An information system is designed to improve the existing manual system in a computerized way that it can be accessed via desktop or mobile. Using agile software in the development the information system, the application can provide complete and efficient loan information stored in a database server. Based on the user responses, the system is built in a more effective, simpler, faster, and a more structurized way.

Abstract

English has become a world language that must be mastered by many people because English has dominated the era of communication to connect and transfer knowledge to the entire world. When it comes to the development of mobile applications for language learning, previous research has tended to emphasize testing on various technologies such as multimedia, virtual and augmented reality, conversational agents and artificial intelligence-based systems. This research, therefore, aimed to develop a mobile-based English learning application that provided English learning in the form of stories called the Deltalk. This mobile-based English learning application provides features in which the users can practice their speaking in English. This app was developed by integrating ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) technology provided by NOVO Learning. The ASR was integrated with Deltalk through the API (Application Programming Interface) and Websocket. Deltalk development adapted two agile frameworks, including Scrum and Lean Software Development by performing MVP process one time.

Abstract

The presence of a library is very much needed as an effort to form superior human resources. The Flores library was established in Pea Nature Village to provide reading materials that can increase the knowledge of the audience in Pa Nature Village. However, the library in question still does not have an information system that can assist users in conducting information retrieval. On the other hand, currently, information technology is developing very fast. The library information system application is expected to help fulfill the need for access to information and information retrieval. Mobile application is the selected application in the development of library information systems. The use of mobile applications will make it easier for users to access information on a mobile basis. This application can also assist in tracing the collection and also the status of the collection of library materials in the Flores Library.

Abstract

Due to college students’ mobility nowadays (e.g. joining Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka program) that allows students to be off campus for a time, some learning processes have to be conducted online. The objective of this study was to investigate how students at an Indonesian college perceived the conduct of online and offline TOEFL ITP preparation classes. Participants in this study were 47 students at an Indonesian private college who completed the TOEFL ITP preparation course. Data collection and data analysis were designed with a mixed-method approach. An online questionnaire with closed and open-ended questions was administered for data collection. The framework used in this study was the Community of Inquiry (CoI). The data obtained was analyzed by practicing qualitative and quantitative approaches as well to gain the participants’ deeper insights into the issue. The participants believed that social, cognitive, and teaching presence could be established in both face-to-face and online learning settings despite their higher preference for offline classes, especially in social presence. Furthermore, it was known that the participants’ preference for teaching methods was in line with the methodology that their instructors carried out. The matter was in the different instructions that they had during online and offline sessions. Implications for teachers are to make sure the learning process can be conducted by establishing a social presence, cognitive presence, and teaching presence.

Abstract

Danau Toba merupakan destinasi wisata unggulan di Sumatera Utara yang memiliki potensi wisata alam, wisata buatan, dan budaya Batak. Namun, wisatawan seringkali membutuhkan rekomendasi wisata yang sesuai dengan kriteria keinginan mereka. Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, aplikasi rekomendasi destinasi wisata di sekitar Danau Toba dikembangkan menggunakan metode Multi-Objective Optimization on the basis of Ratio Analysis (MOORA) dengan pembobotan Rank Order Centroid (ROC). Aplikasi rekomendasi wisata dirancang untuk mempermudah para wisatawan untuk mencari destinasi wisata yang menarik sesuai keinginannya. Aplikasi akan memberikan rekomendasi wisata yang optimal berdasarkan kriteria yang telah ditentukan, yaitu jenis wisata, wilayah, rating, harga tiket, hari operasional, dan jam operasional. Jumlah data pada aplikasi rekomendasi wisata menggunakan 123 objek wisata. Hasil aplikasi yang dibangun berupa pengembangan aplikasi rekomendasi wisata berbasis mobile dengan menggunakan API, PHP dan teknologi multi-platform yaitu Flutter. Pengujian aplikasi melibatkan beberapa pengujian, termasuk system testing, user testing, dan pengujian akurasi pengelolaan data. Hasil system testing menunjukkan bahwa aplikasi beroperasi dengan stabil tanpa error dan semua fungsi berjalan sesuai yang diharapkan. User testing dilakukan dengan menyebarkan kuesioner kepada 625 responden yang telah menggunakan aplikasi tersebut, terdiri dari masyarakat domisili Sumatera Utara sebanyak 144 orang (69,2%) dan luar Sumatera Utara sebanyak 65 orang (30,8%). Sebanyak 94,2% responden menyatakan bahwa aplikasi mudah digunakan, 94,1% merasa fungsi rekomendasi sesuai dengan kebutuhan, 83,2% menganggap desain tampilan menarik, 95,5% menyatakan informasi pada setiap destinasi wisata sudah jelas, 94,7% pengguna dari luar dan dalam Sumatera Utara dapat memahami alur aplikasi, dan 94,4% berencana menggunakan aplikasi ini sebagai panduan untuk mengunjungi destinasi wisata di Sumatera Utara. Hasil pengujian akurasi pengelolaan data menunjukkan kecocokan yang tinggi antara hasil perhitungan manual dan implementasi sistem dalam menambah, mengubah, dan menghapus data wisata. Aplikasi rekomendasi ini memiliki keunggulan yang mampu menekankan wisata disekitar Danau Toba sehingga potensi dan kearifan lokalnya dapat terlihat lebih menarik bagi pengunjung baru.   Abstract Lake Toba is a premier tourist destination in North Sumatra, renowned for its natural beauty, artificial attractions, and rich Batak culture. However, tourists often seek recommendations that align with their preferences. To address this need, a tourist destination recommendation application for the Lake Toba area has been developed using the Multi-Objective Optimization based on the Ratio Analysis (MOORA) method, incorporating Rank Order Centroid (ROC) weighting. This application aims to simplify the process for tourists to find appealing destinations based on their criteria. It provides optimal recommendations according to various factors, including type of tourism, region, ratings, ticket prices, operational days, and hours. The application features data on 123 tourist attractions. The resulting application is a mobile-based platform developed using API, PHP, and cross-platform technology, specifically Flutter. Thorough testing has been conducted, including system testing, user testing, and data management accuracy testing. The system testing revealed that the application operates smoothly without errors and that all functionalities perform as intended. User testing involved distributing questionnaires to 625 respondents who had used the application, comprising 144 individuals from North Sumatra (69.2%) and 65 from outside the region (30.8%). The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with 94.2% of respondents finding the application easy to use, 94.1% satisfied that the recommendations met their needs, 83.2% deeming the design attractive, and 95.5% confirming that the information about each tourist destination was clear. Furthermore, 94.7% of users, both from within and outside North Sumatra, reported understanding the application flow, and 94.4% expressed their intention to use the app as a guide for visiting tourist sites in North Sumatra. The data management accuracy test indicated a strong correlation between manual calculations and the application's data handling capabilities for adding, modifying, and deleting tourism data. This recommendation application highlights tourism around Lake Toba, making its potential and local wisdom more appealing to new visitors.

Abstract

Materi ajar merupakan bagian yang sangat penting dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar. Keberagaman materi ajar diperlukan untuk memfasilitasi pembelajaran yang menarik di sekolah dasar. Melalui Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini, sebuah film pendek bermuatan konten lokal telah disosialisasikan dan dibagikan kepada empat Sekolah Dasar di Kabupaten Toba yang menjadi mitra institusi. PkM dilaksanakan dengan kegiatan menonton bersama di masing-masing sekolah, diskusi, dan tanya jawab tentang film pendek. Selain itu, kuesioner juga dibagikan kepada peserta sosialisasi di keempat sekolah dengan total 260 peserta. Tujuan kuesioner adalah untuk mengetahui pemahaman peserta terhadap materi/konten lokal yang disampaikan melalui film pendek dan saran. Dari analisis deskriptif yang dilakukan, secara umum peserta sosialisasi berpendapat bahwa film pendek tersebut sangat mudah dipahami, sangat dekat dengan budaya dan kehidupan sehari-hari, dan sangat menarik dijadikan sebagai materi ajar di kelas. Selain itu, para peserta juga mampu mengidentifikasi budaya Batak Toba dan pesan moral yang disampaikan. Melalui sosialisasi dan diseminasi film pendek ini, diharapkan sekolah memiliki materi ajar yang beragam untuk mendukung pembelajaran yang menarik dan mudah dipahami.
