Abstract

This study is primarily aimed to investigate the beliefs and attitudes of Indonesian EFL pre-service teachers toward the use of mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets for learning and instructional practice in Indonesia. Furthermore, this phenomenological study attempted to reveal the factors affecting these two constructs from 20 Indonesian EFL pre-service teachers through semi-structured interviews. As teaching tools, the majority of the participants expressed their reluctance to use mobile devices as instructional tools in in-person classes. However, they acknowledged that this technology could facilitate online learning and agreed that this technology would become more popular in the future. Analysis of the data also revealed factors affecting beliefs and attitudes of pre-service teachers toward the use of mobile devices as instructional tools comprising perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness and other influencing elements of self-efficacy: enactive mastery and physiological arousal. Finally, this study presents implications and recommendations that can be a reference to optimize the integrated mobile technology for class instruction.

Abstract

This research retells stories of Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers regarding their experience employing different types of assessments in their classrooms. The research aims to understand how educators in Indonesia view assessment practices in EFL learning environments. A qualitative approach using narrative inquiry research type was used along with semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation as data collection methods. Four EFL teachers from two vocational high schools in Central Java, Indonesia, were recruited to describe the types of learning assessments used and the perceived benefits and challenges of various assessment methods. The findings reveal that EFL teachers face various challenges in designing assessments, including ensuring student honesty and aligning assessments with learning objectives. The research also highlights the importance of formative and summative assessments, as well as the integration of Assessment for Learning (AfL), Assessment of Learning (AoL), and Assessment as Learning (AaL) in the assessment process. The results of this research provide valuable insights for policymakers, curriculum developers, and educational institutions to improve assessment policies and practices, better aligning them with the goals of EFL education in Indonesia.

Abstract

The novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and the short story Surabanglus are two works by Ahmad Tohari (AT) that talk about food and how food becomes the identity of a society. RDP tells the story of how Srintil, the Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk, loses her parents due to a massive poisoning in her village caused by tempeh bongrek made by her parents. With very little knowledge of toxicology, the people of Dukuh Paruk "treat" the tempeh poisoning with empirical experience passed down from their ancestors. While Surabanglus tells the story of the friendship between Kimin and Suing which is so touching because Suing had to experience the bad luck of eating poisonous cassava due to unbearable hunger. This research is descriptive and qualitative and uses textual analysis to reveal and interpret the hidden construction in a text. The data collected is analyzed from a gastro-critical lens. Gastro-criticism is part of a critical approach to welcome the phenomenon of culinary literature in literary works. Culinary is chosen as one of the symbols, myths, and signs in the development of literary works. From the data contained in the novel RDP and short story Surabanglus in the form of narrative quotations, and dialog between characters in AT's two works, there are four findings, namely; food and its characteristics, food and socioeconomic status, food and food processing tools, food and medicine. Through these two works, AT not only presents a story with food as the plot, but at the same time, Tohari documents what and how food in a society becomes a symbol and social identity of the community.
