Abstract

Tolerance in religion practices among different groups or differen religious communities is always important in plural societies like Indonesia. However, the fact shows that many intolarance cases still occur in the country. This study is an endevour to explore the tolerance teaching brought  by Gus Baha in his traditional islamic lectures. In addition, the reaction of the public to the teaching was also examined. It adopted a digital ethnography approach employing virtual data as the main sources, including YouTube Video, and the comments of netizen following them. The ideas of tolerance were analyzed thematically, and the comments were classified, following the Appraisal theory (Martin & Rose, 2005). Based on the analysis, it reveals that Gus Baha makes use of old stories involving prophets, the Prophet and his companion as they implemented tolerant practices of daily business and religious matters. The stories there proved upscaled tolerance exemplified by the best models for Moslem communities. The public (netizen) have shown positive responses toward the ideas, as it is proved from their positive emotion (80%), and judgment (74%), meaning they like the idea and agree that they are right. In turn, it is expected that they would practice the models of tolerance in their own daily lives.

Abstract

Possession is a serious health problem for Javanese and Muslims. This study aims to describe the perspective of Javanese and Muslims on a trance or a state of being possessed. This is qualitative research applying a linguistic anthropological approach. The subjects are the members of the Javanese and Muslim communities in Tulungagung. They are the individuals having experienced trance(s), their family, and the witnesses. Other important informants are the healers, shamans, and Islamic leaders (ustadz or kyai). Based on the analysis, it shows that trance for the Javanese is a disease inflicted by a certain spirit. It must be cured by a shaman with a series of rituals and offerings. For Muslims, it is a disturbance of the genie as the possessed disobeys God’s rules. Its healing is done through ruqyah by reciting particular verses from the Qur'an. The way Javanese treats a trance reflects their perspectives and thoughts as found in local wisdom: tamba teka lara lunga (the cure comes and the disease goes), meaning that every disease has its cure. For Muslims, a trance is simply an effect of the human relation to his God. A better quality in the relationship will result in a human’s better life. Conversely, a bad relationship to God will bring about a negative quality in human life. Trance is just one of them; it is believed to be evidence of the poor relationship a possessed has to God.

Abstract

There is no “real equivalence” in translation; it is always relative, finding the best among the defect possibilities. This study was aimed to discover the the types of variations of the experiential meaning breadth (EMB) in a novel, 'Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk' in Indonesian and English, to find out the EMB variation level. This is a descriptive qualitative endevour, applying a content analysis method, focusing on the experiential meaning, particularly on its breadth dimension. The data sources are two language versions of the novel, Indonesian (Ind) and English (En). The data are clause units of transitivity. The results of this study indicate that the most dominant EMB variation is 0 variation. The intertextual bond is proved to be strong in leading the translators to create the meaning of the clauses. In general the variation level of EMB is very low, 9.16. This indicates that the intertextual context plays a very dominant role to lead the decision of the translator in realizing the meaning. The variations in the EMB in general do not affect the completeness of the meaning.

Abstract

Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby that is written in 1925 records one of the most remarkable decades in American history. American economy “roars” in the interbellum/interwar period with the advancement of technology and the stock market but then it declined by excessive consumerism. This article seeks to identify the changes in the American economy and consumer culture as depicted in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and the subsequent depression that happened. A new historicism technique is applied to describe some major factors enabling America in the twenties to lead the world’s economy as depicted in the novel and factors ending the development. By using a content analysis technique, data in the form of excerpts from the novel are collected. The data are then analyzed following the thematic analysis principles. The result of the study points out some changes that made America in the twenties roar are the increase of middle-class people, the widespread use of technology, the development of the stock market, the affordability of automobiles, and the freedom to speak and act. The glorious decades came to an end after 1939 when the stock market crashed, consumerism escalated, credit card use expanded and banks got a “panic attack”. The implication for today’s lifestyle is mentioned.

Abstract

In order to know the difference between the local and overseas media in delivering the news and elaborating on the “political dynasty” topic, the researcher conducted research on Najwa Sihab YouTube channel titled “Butet Kartaredjasa dan Petinggi PROJO Bicara Putusan MK” as the local media, and South China Morning Post titled “Nepotism May Win Indonesia’s 2024 Election”. There are two theories that were used to analyze the data, attitude aspects of appraisal theory (Martin & White, 2005), as well as the ideological square from (van Dijk, 2006). In addition, in the process of collecting the data for the analysis process, the researcher uses the qualitative descriptive approach (Miles & Huberman, 1994). The findings show that in local media there are two camps. Pro-Jokowi’s frequently used social esteem and de-emphasize negative things about us to deny negative accusation towards them. Contra-Jokowi’s mostly used social sanction and emphasize negative things about them to present the power abuse by the Jokowi’s party. In overseas media, there are only neutral party that frequently used social esteem and emphasizing negative things about them.

Abstract

Background: Background: Tourism villages generally need help with marketing due to the lack of community involvement in these efforts. As a result, the content and news on their websites often need to be updated. This activity aims to enhance the writing skills of tourism journalism cadres in Tamansari, Banyumas. Method: In order to achieve this goal, a training program includes three stages: presentations, field observations for material/data collection, and writing practice. Results: Based on the results and evaluations conducted, it can be concluded that the training program was quite successful. This is evident from three main indicators: 1) the training participants showed a high enthusiasm for attending the training (100%), and they are also committed to promoting (100%) their village. During the implementation, the number of participants remained intact (100%) and engaged in every activity stage with total commitment. A post-training survey also supports this positive trend. The majority (75%) felt the training went well, and they also experienced the benefits of the activity. With this positive perception, they also expressed readiness (100%) to create/write news and to promote tourism (100%). They demonstrated this by submitting news writing assignments in class or individual tasks at home. Their writings required minimal editing (3-5%) and were ready for publication. Conclusion: The mentoring provided awareness of the importance of promoting and utilizing the younger generation to contribute by channeling their abilities to create journalistic works that highlight tourism information in their villages.

Abstract

The novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and the short story Surabanglus are two works by Ahmad Tohari (AT) that talk about food and how food becomes the identity of a society. RDP tells the story of how Srintil, the Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk, loses her parents due to a massive poisoning in her village caused by tempeh bongrek made by her parents. With very little knowledge of toxicology, the people of Dukuh Paruk "treat" the tempeh poisoning with empirical experience passed down from their ancestors. While Surabanglus tells the story of the friendship between Kimin and Suing which is so touching because Suing had to experience the bad luck of eating poisonous cassava due to unbearable hunger. This research is descriptive and qualitative and uses textual analysis to reveal and interpret the hidden construction in a text. The data collected is analyzed from a gastro-critical lens. Gastro-criticism is part of a critical approach to welcome the phenomenon of culinary literature in literary works. Culinary is chosen as one of the symbols, myths, and signs in the development of literary works. From the data contained in the novel RDP and short story Surabanglus in the form of narrative quotations, and dialog between characters in AT's two works, there are four findings, namely; food and its characteristics, food and socioeconomic status, food and food processing tools, food and medicine. Through these two works, AT not only presents a story with food as the plot, but at the same time, Tohari documents what and how food in a society becomes a symbol and social identity of the community.

Abstract

This study is to reveal the metaphor used in political talks among the supporters of running mates in Indonesian General Election of 2019, those are Jokowi as the incumbent, and Prabowo as the competitor. This applied a content analysis to explore the use of metaphor in the political speeches. The data source included the news and the videos containing metaphors produced by the politician supporting the candidates. The theory applied in investigating the metaphors are conceptual metaphor (Lakoff and Johnson:1980), and the Critical Metaphor Analysis, CMA (Charteris-Black: 2004). Some conceptual metaphors drawn from their metaphorical expressions are NATION IS A BUILDING, functions to criticize that the building couldn’t stand on the lie, hiding the history of competitor candidate, Prabowo. Other metaphors from the incumbent are targeted to Rocky Gerung (RG), as a tough and intelligent speakers in Indonesian political discourse. Budiman Sujatmiko took the concept of DEBATING IS A PLAY, undermining the arguments in RG’s statements. Meanwhile, the supporters in Prabowo Camp focuses on criticizing the behavior of the existing government and leaders, by creating concepts of MISUSING IS STEALING, PRESIDENT IS A SCHOOL BOY, SWEARING IS A SENSATION, TO LEAD IS TO SUFFER. These two different metaphors go into an ideology with different direction. In one side, the incumbents claim that the government has failed. In another, the opposants believe that it has failed, by proving their bad behaviors

Abstract

Yogyakarta, a city with a significant Muslim population, has seen a rise in Muslim product stores that cater to both local and global consumer demands. These stores use diverse linguistic resources to appeal to a broad customer base, reflecting the influence of both local cultural values and global commercial trends. The study investigates how language is employed in naming these stores. This research was conducted to 1) describe the language use in the names of Muslim-product stores, 2) explain the language-use pattern of the store names, and 3) identify the unique syntax of store names. This study adopted a qualitative-descriptive approach, with a survey method. Data was collected by observing Muslim product shops in the city of Yogyakarta and recording shopfronts/façade shop data by recording it with a digital camera on a cellphone. Besides, the data collection was also carried out through digital surveys via Google Map. This was carried out to complement the results of conventional survey and also as a data verification step. In particular, this research will specifically focus on the textual data of shop names. The data will be analyzed interactively to categorize based on the linguistic form, constituent elements and syntactic patterns of the names. Based on the analysis results, it can be concluded 1) four languages are used in the shop name: Indonesian, English, Arabic, Javanese. They are used in mono-, bi-, and multilingual signs, with a predominance of multilingualism, 2) the naming of the stores shows the elements of name, product, quality, and target consumer; generally the name identity is chosen in Arabic, and the product is in English, and 3) structurally, Indonesian shop name phrases employ English rule, giving a deviating pattern, which implies a strong influence of the global language.
