Abstract

The Liberal Islam Network is a social-intellectual movement and policy reform group for Islamic sciences. A party that brings the discourse of emancipation and freedom of thought with concepts of pluralism, democracy, and secularism to give birth to ideas about inclusive Islam, progressive Islam, and humanist Islam. By reinterpreting the practices of the Islamic sciences, such as the study of the Qu'ran, the Kalam, the Fiqh, the Sufism, and the Philosophy, it has received much criticism as well as support for contributing to the Islamic sciences. Liberal Islamic networks want a religious definition that is humanistic, broad-based monotheism, not authoritarian, and they tend to be more transparent, inclusive and egalitarian, not simply dishonest or disbelieving to other communities. This paper will focus on two studies, first, about the movement of the Liberal Islamic Network methodology. ; Secondly, explore the contribution of the Liberal Islamic Network to the renewal of the tradition of Islamic sciences. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis with an intellectual history approach. The paper is then discussed using the theory of social movements and the scientific revolution of Thomas Kuhn. Nowadays, the Liberal Islamic Network has contributed to the development of Islamic thought, especially in the renewal of Islamic sciences.

Abstract

This study highlights the tendency of ?Ilm al-Kal?m or sometimes called "Islamic scholastic theology" which is one of the less developed Islamic studies. The author proposes that developing this study requires criticism and a new, more contextual approach. One of the most urgent in Kalam's study is to include contemporary contextual themes such as social, humanity, culture and technology. Therefore, the study orientation of Kalam on the issue of divinity (theocentric) must be transformed into the issue of humanity (anthropocentric). For this reason, Kalam's study must be interdisciplinary with the social sciences and other modern humanities.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the thoughts of contemporary Muslim scholars who offer a contextual approach to understanding the Qur'anic text and the theoretical relationship of each of these figures' thoughts and their application in Q.S. al-Maidah: 38. Some of the statistics discussed in this study include: Fazlur Rahman, Abdullah Saeed, Khaled Aboe El-Fadl, and M. Amin Abdullah. The selection of these four figures was based on the strength of their thinking in understanding the contextual nature of the Qur'an and their influence on other contemporary Muslim scholars, both in Indonesian Islamic universities and in different countries. By formulating the thoughts of these four figures, a moderate contemporary interpretation of Islamic law will be formed, and laws that are relevant to the realities of the times will be formulated. This research uses a literature approach by reviewing literature journals and contemporary tafsir books. The primary data of this research are books and journals that are the thoughts of the four figures, especially those that discuss the hermeneutics of the Qur'an in the renewal of Islamic studies. This research concludes that the contemporary interpretations of the four figures have similarities in seeing the social realities that occur and their theories are interconnected with each other. Fazlur Rahman's double movement theory plays a role in seeing Khaled Aboe El-Fadl's theory's relationship between author, text, and reader. Abdullah Saeed's hierarchy of values theory plays a role in mapping the text. The three-element theory (text, reality, insight) of M. Amin Abdullah serves as a measure of a reader's insight in analyzing the text and connecting it with the reality that occurs. According to them, the punishment for cutting hands contained in Q.S. al-Maidah: 38 can be replaced with imprisonment or a heavy fine. This is because the punishment of cutting hands is no longer by the current social reality, considered inhumane, and contrary to humanity. This research remains theoretical in nature. Future studies may apply the proposed contextual framework to other Qur'anic themes, such as socio-legal or ethical issues, to test its broader applicability.

Abstract

The old rule of asba>b al-nuzu>l in the interpretation of the Qur’an gives birth to textual understanding. Asba>b al-nuzu>l limits the scope of interpretation of certain verses. Because revealed verses cannot be used as the sole basis for determining the direction of interpretation of the Qur’an. This paper uses critical discourse analysis methods to assess and reconstruct the rules of asba>b al-nuzu>l contextually. In the end, asba>b al-nuzu>l was no longer considered the cause of the revelation of the verse, but rather the reason for interpreting the Qur’an. With a new position and understanding, all verses will find new reasons or causes to restore.
