Abstract

Background: Multicomponent training program like OTAGO is considered to improve the physical performance of pre-frail elderly, thereby reducing risk of fall. The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) is a combination test that assesses physical performance and becomes a fall risk screening test for pre-frail elderly. This study aimed to compare the modified OTAGO to walking training on physical performance as measured by SPPB in the pre-frail elderly. Methods: This was an observational study with a cross-sectional design. The data were taken from the previous study including pre-frail subjects in Prolanis, Gunung Pati area, Semarang before and after giving intervention (modified OTAGO vs walking training) for 6 weeks. The SPPB score was measured from balance function test, chair stand test, and 4-meter walking test before and after the intervention. Data analysis was using SPSS ver 20.0. Paired sample T-test and Wilcoxon signed ranks test were used to analyze the SPPB score before and after interventions in the modified OTAGO and walking training group, respectively. Mann-Whitney U was used to analyze the difference in the average improvement of SPPB score. Results: There was a significant improvement in SPPB score before and after interventions either in modified OTAGO (p=0.013) or walking training (p=0.013). No significant difference was found in the average improvement of SPPB score in both groups (p=0.826). Conclusion: Both modified OTAGO and walking training intervention can improve the physical performance of pre-frail elderly. The modified OTAGO training is not superior in improving physical performance compared to walking training.

Abstract

Background Every individual has a lifetime, starting from the womb, born into the world, to becoming elderly. Aging is a process of gradual loss of tissue's ability to repair itself, maintain its normal structure and function so that it cannot defend the tissue from injury (including infection), and repair the damage that occurs. In the elderly, there are various kinds of health problems such as sleep disorders. Sleep disorder or insomnia is a person's inability to sleep. Poor sleep quality can be improved in various ways such as relaxation techniques. Aim To compare the effectiveness of Jacobson's Progressive Muscle Relaxation (JPMR) and Slow Deep Breathing Therapy in improving sleep quality in the elderly. Method This type of research was a quantitative quasi-experiment with pretest and post-test methods (one group pre-test and post-test design). Respondents involved 49 people while research data were processed with the Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests. The Sleep Quality Questionnaire used the PSQI questionnaire. Result The Wilcoxon test with an alternative to the Mann-Whitney test showed no significant difference in effectiveness between the two therapies with p-value = 0.274. Conclusion Both therapies had almost the same level of effectiveness; there was no significant difference between the two, so progressive muscle relaxation therapy and Slow Deep Breathing were equally effective in treating anxiety and improving sleep quality.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: It is necessary to make innovations that make it easier for osteoarthritis sufferers to do exercises independently at home. Patients can apply proper self-management, such as doing pain-reducing quadriceps muscle exercises. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the effect of quadriceps isometrics on pain intensity in the elderly community with knee osteoarthritis. Method: This study uses a quasi-experimental design with pre and post-test control group design. The sample was selected using a consecutive sampling technique, which consisted of 30 older people divided into 15 older people for each intervention and control group. The intervention group sample was given a treatment of quadriceps isometric for weeks with a frequency of twice a week, and then the control group was given education. The analysis used is a statistical test paired sample T-test and an independent T-test. Result: The paired sample statistics obtained the average pain result in the pre-intervention category with a scale of 6.2, while after the intervention, it was 5.2with a p-value < 0.05. In the paired sample statistics, the average pain result in the category before education was 7.28, while after education, it was 8.03 with a p-value < 0.05. In the independent T-test for the intervention and control groups, the results obtained were a p-value of 0.039 < 0.05. Conclusion: There was a significant difference between the average intervention and control groups of quadriceps isometric exercise in reducing pain intensity in elderly patients.

Abstract

Background: Aging-related physical changes impact Quality of Life (Qol). Even though it is a popular form of exercise for the elderly, few of them are aware of the many advantages of Hatha Yoga. Aim: This study compares elderly exercise programs with Hatha Yoga in an effort to enhance quality of life in older adults. Material and methods: This was a randomized controlled trial consisting of 26 participants split into two groups: 13 people did Hatha Yoga and 13 people did senior exercise. For six weeks, both groups participated in three-week exercises, and the EQ-5D-5L was used to measure quality of life both before and after the intervention. Results: The elderly exercise group's delta post-test utility index score (0,15 ± 0,10) was lower than that of the Hatha Yoga group (0,46 ± 0,11); this difference was statistically significant (<0,001). The VAS score in the Hatha Yoga group (85,15 ± 7,38) was higher than that of the elderly exercise (74,15 ± 7,97) and the difference was significant (p=0.001). The difference in the score of Hatha Yoga (13,62 ± 5,47) compared to elderly exercise (2,46 ± 1,98) results in a significant p<0.001. Conclusions: Hatha Yoga improves better EQ-5D-5L than elderly exercises to improve the QoL of elders. Keywords: elderly, EQ-5D-5L, exercise, hatha yoga, quality of life
