Abstract

Abstract: The increasing interest of the Indonesian Muslim community to perform umrah has been previously studied by many researchers. However, the phenomenon of backpacker umrah, which has attracted the middle-class Muslim community in Indonesia in the last decade, has not been widely discussed. Backpacker umrah is different from conventional umrah because it does not get complete facilities from travel agencies, so the price is lower. This study explores the motivation of umrah pilgrims to choose backpacker umrah solely because of lower prices or other considerations. Then how far is the response of umrah travel agents to this new trend? This type of research is qualitative research that uses a phenomenological approach. The method used was the observation, questionnaires, and unstructured interviews with 15 backpacker umrah participants determined by a snowball. The results of this study indicate that there are other motivations besides low prices, namely lifestyle. In addition, the selection of the type of umrah that is not tied to a schedule can be more solemn in worship. Although it does not publish directly as one of its products, the umrah travel agency responds to this backpacker umrah phenomenon by seeing it as an economic opportunity by providing land arrangement facilities.

Abstract

Kauman kampong is a religious servant residence of Yogyakarta Sultanate which was formed along with the establishment of the Yogyakarta Sultanate Great Mosque in 1773. Muhammadiyah was founded in this kampong in 1912 which provided its own historical dynamics for this kampong. Since 2010 in Kauman kampong, Yogyakarta, the historical tour package "Tour de Muhammadiyah" has been re-branding to "Muhammadiyah Heritage Trip" in 2016. After ten years of developing guided tours in Kauman kampong, as technology develops, it is necessary to develop a digital basis, among others using a QR code that guides tourists to explore Kauman kampong as a solo-traveler without having to depend on the existence of a tour guide. This article offers the novelty of digitizing the historical travel route in Kauman kampong in four themes of interpretations, namely the history of the religious servants' village, the history of the Islamic women's movement, the history of the four national heroes from Kauman, and the history of Muhammadiyah's journey as an organization. It is hoped that this novelty can inspire the development of other historical regions in Indonesia to digitize local history in each place. This descriptive qualitative research collects data with participatory observation, interview, and documentation.

Abstract

As the front guards, museum guides need to master many skills that support the role of transferring information in the museum to every visitor who comes, both domestic and foreign. More specifically, every museum guide must master foreign language skills in order to serve foreign visitors. Unfortunately, not all museum guides have foreign language skills, especially English, and other supporting skills such as curation, communication, and public speaking. This paper investigates the limited ability of English mastery and other supporting skills of museum guides in two government-owned museums in Yogyakarta, the second tourism city in Indonesia, and how far they affect the internationalization of the two museums as representatives of other museums in Indonesia. This descriptive research uses data collection methods in surveys with questionnaires and in-depth interviews with guides and visitors of the museum, both domestic and foreign. This research found that limited foreign language skills, especially English and other professional skills of museum guides, can slow down the museum's internationalization process in Indonesia.

Abstract

Indonesia, with its majority Muslim population, is home to two major Islamic organizations: Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Although both are rooted in the same faith, they often face tensions due to differing interpretations and religious practices. Most previous research has focused on their conflicts and rhetorical approaches to resolution, while practical strategies—such as tourism—have received little attention. This conceptual study explores how peace tourism can serve as a new way to foster reconciliation between Muhammadiyah and NU. Peace tourism refers to travel that facilitates dialogue and understanding between groups in conflict. This study introduces a simple, practical model of peace tourism that uses shared historical narratives and visits to significant sites of both organizations to bring the two groups closer and promote Ukhuwah Islamiyah (Islamic brotherhood). By participating in these joint trips, both groups can strengthen two key aspects of Islamic brotherhood: ta'aruf (getting to know one another) and tafahum (mutual understanding). The study draws on existing literature in conflict resolution and peace tourism, offering a theoretical exploration of how tourism can improve inter-group relations in Indonesia. It concludes with suggestions for tourism initiatives that could create space for meaningful dialogue and greater harmony between Muhammadiyah and NU.
