Abstract

This study aims to develop digital communication module that can be used by the general public for professional communication contexts. The module has been developed using the Define, Design, Development, Dissemination (4D) model: Define includes determining a digital communication platform along with the goals and etiquette needed; Design includes making a blueprint for the module; Development includes the development of the module as a whole by involving expert judgment; then Dissemination includes dissemination/publication of the module. From the Define and Design stages, the initial design of the module is obtained. Expert assessment at the Development stage shows that the module design is useful for audiences and is appropriate for dissemination with minor improvements for further dissemination in a form of a book at the Dissemination stage.

Abstract

Travelers seeking authentic interactions with nature and culture are increasingly interested in destinations managed by the local community. Amidst the rising number of communities offering similar traveling experiences, operators seek a way to promote their destination and its distinctiveness. One of the ways to accentuate the particularity and the status of a tourist spot is by doing an online promotion in English, and artificial intelligence seems to open a window for its possibilities. This research aims to reveal how residents perceive the use of AI, including ChatGPT, in promoting their community-based tourist destinations. Residents participating in the research were invited to express their feelings and reactions towards AI-generated texts promoting a community-managed destination in the area they reside. Their reactions revealed three states of emotion: insecurity, uncertainty, and inauthenticity. They also reported an inability to make an informed decision due to a lack of key knowledge and skills, rendering the use of AI unproductive.

Abstract

As the front guards, museum guides need to master many skills that support the role of transferring information in the museum to every visitor who comes, both domestic and foreign. More specifically, every museum guide must master foreign language skills in order to serve foreign visitors. Unfortunately, not all museum guides have foreign language skills, especially English, and other supporting skills such as curation, communication, and public speaking. This paper investigates the limited ability of English mastery and other supporting skills of museum guides in two government-owned museums in Yogyakarta, the second tourism city in Indonesia, and how far they affect the internationalization of the two museums as representatives of other museums in Indonesia. This descriptive research uses data collection methods in surveys with questionnaires and in-depth interviews with guides and visitors of the museum, both domestic and foreign. This research found that limited foreign language skills, especially English and other professional skills of museum guides, can slow down the museum's internationalization process in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract. Writing instructions pose challenges for educators, as students often struggle to effectively express their ideas in writing. First language influence further complicates the writing process. With the emergence of ChatGPT, this paper aims to explore its potential application in the writing classroom. This study investigates the strategies employed by students in integrating ChatGPT, an AI language model, into their writing process. Seven outstanding undergraduate students of the Applied English program preparing themselves for Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) were asked to write some simple essays. They are encouraged to utilize ChatGPT to help them improve their writing. Their portfolio of essays was used to explore how students utilize this technology to enhance their writing skills and evaluate the effectiveness of such integration. Some in-depth interviews were also conducted with these students who actively engaged with ChatGPT to understand how they enhance their writing skills through the help of ChatGPT: students' experiences and approaches to incorporating ChatGPT into their writing workflow, including idea generation, improving sentence structure and grammar, enhancing coherence and flow, and expanding vocabulary. Perceived benefits and challenges associated with integrating ChatGPT are examined, including: effects on confidence, efficiency, and writing quality. Concerns regarding overreliance, plagiarism, and authenticity of the written work are also addressed. This study's findings highlight the efficacy of integrating AI language models in writing classes through ChatGPT's writing suggestions, enhancing students' expression, structure, and style. Further the study shows that while ChatGPT improves students' writing skills , it raises concerns about overreliance and plagiarism. Ethical guidelines and long-term studies are needed to address dependency issues and maintain authenticity. Assessing ChatGPT's adaptability across writing contexts is crucial for responsible integration in education, advancing AI-assisted writing understanding. Keywords: college writing, ChatGPT, learning strategies
