Abstract

The exploration of Javanese language in children encompasses language attitudes and the process of grammar system formation in children. The growth and development of children with the Javanese language are influenced by their mother tongue and environment. Factors influencing language acquisition in children include the social environment, which in this study includes teachers and students at Jumapolo 01 Kindergarten. This research examines the intensity of Javanese language interaction in the domestic domain and the influence of Indonesian. The study aims to understand the language attitudes of children from Jumapolo 01 Kindergarten and their syntactic level. Data collection was conducted through active participatory observation, using observation, involvement, and conversation techniques. The data were then reduced and analyzed based on syntactic theory. Finally, conclusions were drawn from the research findings regarding language attitudes and syntactic phenomena observed in sentence patterns produced by Jumapolo 01 Kindergarten students. This study reveals that preschool students at Jumapolo 01 Kindergarten predominantly choose to use Javanese in conversations with friends and educators. The sentence patterns produced by Jumapolo 01 Kindergarten students demonstrate an ability to form clear and efficient sentences. Although there are some sentence pattern errors, the sentences are still acceptable between speakers and listeners.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the preservation of the mother tongue in the family sphere in the Bugis community in the Karimunjawa Islands. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected using observation and unstructured interviews. Data analysis used Miles and Huberman's theory, the sociolinguistic approach related to preservation, and the language shift by Spolsky and Schiffman. The results of the analysis are presented descriptively. The results of this study indicate the role of the head of the family in regulating the pattern of selection and preservation of the mother tongue in the family of the Bugis ethnic community in the Karimunjawa Islands region. There is a slight difference between ideological patterns related to the process of language preservation in families in young families and non-young families. Young families are more flexible in intervening in the linguistic ideology of their children, while non-young families appear to have strong interventions. The multilingual Bugis community still exists and practices its language and maintains Bugis to communicate in the sphere of daily life, despite being able to use Javanese and Indonesian. Tradition and culture are also important supports for language maintenance in the Bugis community in Karimunjawa.

Abstract

The existence of various traditional expressions from different regions in Bangka Belitung encourages this research to find out how these traditional expressions are formed, especially in the northern region of Bangka. This study examines the use of a natural concept in Bangka traditional expressions using cognitive semantic analysis, namely Kövecses' conceptualization metaphor. Data were obtained from a book of Bangka traditional expressions written by Khaliffitriansyah, Karyani, and Prayoga (2016). This research uses metaphor conceptualization as a theory, so it only uses metaphorical data. Based on the findings, 20 data containing metaphorical forms were found to be classified based on the conceptualization. Bangka traditional expressions contain metaphors formed in the concept of nature as the most used concept, including using plants, animals, and not man-made entities such as stars, stones, and water.

Abstract

EFL Teaching is performed by applying various teaching methodologies to suit the characteristics and needs of the students. For the EFL students at public junior high schools who did not experience English learning in public elementary schools and have limited or no prior English language experience, the EFL teacher may incorporate the students’ acquired languages to help them understand the materials. The research exposes why an EFL teacher at SMPN 1 Salem, integrates national and regional languages in her EFL classroom. The data were collected by giving questionnaires to 27 students and 1 teacher. The results show that the teacher mostly incorporates Indonesian and Sundanese with English in her classroom. Javanese is not used, as all students speak it as their mother tongue, even though they belong to Salem Sub-District, Brebes District, Central Java Province, whose regional language is Javanese. The three languages are used in the classroom to enable students to master English, as it is quite difficult to acquire when it is fully taught in English. The research reveals how teacher adapts to the classroom conditions
