Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Politeness Principles in English and Bajo language: A Contrastive Analysis.” This study is an attempt to identify, classify, analyze and contrast polite utterances in English and Bajo language according to politeness principles. In this research, the writer uses descriptive method. The English data were collected from pragmatic books, website and some skripsis, and Bajo language data have been collected by interviewing the native speakers of Bajo language who live in Kalupapi Village, from some books and website. In this research the write uses Leech’s theory in analyzing data and Lado’s theory in contrasting both languages to find out the differences and similarities in both languages. The polite principles in both languages that can be seen are requesting, commanding and ordering, and it is also shown by the acting of convincing what the speaker says. It is expected that this study can help the students and readers in learning politeness principles in using language in daily life.  Keywords: Politeness Principle, Pragmatics, Contrastive Analysis, Bajo Language.

Abstract

                                                ABSTRACTThis research entitled “English Teacher Performances in the Middle and High Schools of Manado Independent School (MIS)” aims to determine the performance of English teachers in planning, implementing and evaluating English learning in bilingual school, as well as knowing the factors that influence the teacher performances. This type of research is descriptive. The theory used to classify performance of teachers is Usman’s (2003) theory, and to determine the factors that influence performances of teachers, Tehseen and Hadi (2015) is applied. The research participants were 6 English teachers (3 teachers in Middle School and 3 teacher in High School). Data were collected by using observation and interview methods. The results of this study indicate that teacher performance is very competitive, each teacher tries to apply the best way in planning, implementing and evaluating the learning process. Factors that influence the performance of teachers are divided into two parts: 1) General factors that include: a) teacher salary, b) working condition, c) students’ behavior, d) relation among the staffs, e) facilities. 2) Special factors, which are the challenges of teacher performances, including: a) time allocation, and b) students’ ability._______________________Keywords : English Teacher, Performance, Factors Influence

Abstract

                                               ABSTRACTThis analysis entitled " Senyapan di dalam Gelar Wicara The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Suatu Analisis Psikolinguistik" is about linguistic learning in a psycholinguistics view. In this study, the writer analyzes the types of pause, one of the forms of speech disfluency in the object of research, the host and the guest stars in the tv talk show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, presented in the transcript of the talk show aired on 1 May 2020 and 2 May 2020. Pauses during spontaneous conversations is very common in daily life. The theory used to support this research is the theory of FoxTree (1995) and Bortfeld et al (2001). This research is focused on the types of speech disfluency that are pauses, which consist of silent pauses and filled pauses. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of pauses that occur in the talk show, and to find out the causes of pauses that occur in it. This analysis applies a qualitative descriptive method. The stages carried out in this research process are collecting data by downloading the video talk show, taking data transcripts with subtitles, identifying forms of pauses, classifying forms of pauses, looking for the causes of pauses, and summarizing the results of the analysis. The results of this study are the total number of pauses produced by the speakers are 183 times. Silent pauses are produced in the amount of 123 times (67%) and filled pauses are 60 times (33%)Keywords: Pause, psycholinguistic analysis
