Abstract

ABSTRACKThe research is entitled “Family Value in Film Coco by Walt Disney Picture”.  It is written to fulfill the requirement of accomplishing bachelor’s degree in English Department Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University. Coco is an animated movie that tells the story of Miguel, a boy from the Rivera family who is very fond of music and he wants to be a musician, but the Rivera family is phobia with music. This research is about family value.  The purpose of this research are identify classify and analyze the theme in the Film Coco through the characters, plot and setting. The method used in this research is primary method. The writer uses the theory of family value from Lammana and Riedman (1990) to analyze and describe the family values in the movie. The result of this research is that the value in our family is important, through the values in the family we can know and understand the meaning of a family. There are three types of family values: togetherness, stability, and loyalty, through conflict and the plot. Keywords: animation film, family value, culture

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims to describe the values of the American ethos concept in the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum. This study uses the American ethos theory of Herbert McClosky in the book of Traditional Value in American life (1974). The object of this research is the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum, that was downloaded from internet media. The focus of this study is a consept of the American ethos in the novel and classification of the types of characters in the novel. The data collection technique used is a careful reading technique, recording, and interpretation. Two approaches were used, namely intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The data analysis technique used is descriptive. The results of the study are as follows. (1) Concept of the American ethos in the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum that showing the attitudes, actions, and dialogues of the characters. Therefore, the values of the American ethos concept are found, namely ambition and achievement, profit pursuit and personal interests, as well as competition. (2) The types of characters possessed by the characters namely amoral, expedient, conforming, irrational-conscientious, and rational-altruistic. (3) The types of character reflected in the American ethos, namely amoral, expedient, and rational-altruistic.      Keywords: American Ethos, Types of Character, Values

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis Skripsi is entitled Cerminan Feminisme dalam novel The Best of Me karya Nicholas Sparks. The objectives of this research were to identify, analyze and describe the feminism as well as to analyze how women fought the struggle with women power in The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks. The writer based her research on the theory of Betty Friedan (1963). According to Friedan, there are five concepts of feminism that consist of The Suburban Women, The American Women, The Educated Women, The Happy Women, and New Women. In conducting this study, the writer used intrinsic and extrinsic approaches, and qualitative analysis in which the process consists of describing, analyzing, and interpreting process. Intrinsic element was used to analyze and identify the characters, and the extrinsic element was used to analyze and describe the types of feminism. These approaches were applied in order to get the appropriate analysis and to answer the problems. The results of this research were the description of events to know Amanda’s characters, the woman who struggled and fought with her power based on the five concepts of feminism by Betty Friedan (1963). Keyword: Feminism, Character

Abstract

ABSTRACT            The title of this research is “Friendship in the Film Big Hero 6 by Walt Disney Animation Studios” and it is intended as a requirement to accomplish a degree at the Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University. The aims of this study are to analyze the friendship aspect and the depiction of friendship reflected in the film Big Hero 6 through the portrayal of the characters named, Hiro, Go Go, Honey Lemon, Fred, Wasabi, dan Baymax. Theories from some experts are being applied in this study, such as theory from Dessai (2010) to unfold the definition of friendship in general and theory from Grieff (2009) to describe the elements of maintaining friendship.  The results show that 1) the characters portray 5 friendship aspects which are solidarity, sacrifice, trust, understanding, and teamwork; (2) the depictions of friendship through some characters that are always there for Hiro; Baymax who gives his life for Hiro, the shape of trust between Hiro and Baymax, Baymax’s sensitivity of understanding the circumstances, and hand in hand to defeat the villain.Keywords: Friendship, Film, Animation, Big Hero 6.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Styles of Leadership as Reflected in the Novel ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ by Ernest Hemingway”. In this research, the writer focuses on the styles of leadership as reflected in the novel. The novel itself is based on Hemingway’s experiences during the Spanish Civil War and features an American protagonist, named Robert Jordan, who fights with Spanish guerrillas for the Republicans. The purpose of this research are to identify and classify the styles of leadership as reflected in the novel and to analyze how styles are reflected through the novel. In this research the writer used qualitative method and described it descriptively. The writer analysed the leadership styles through the character in the novel by using Martin’s theory of characterisation (2004) by looking on character’s features, actions, intentions, desires, and traits. The data were analysed based on Goleman’s theory styles of leadership (2000). There are six styles of leadership, those are: coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting and coaching.The results of this research shown six styles of leadership as reflected in the novel, those are coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting, and coaching. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled ?The Reflection of Anxiety in the Film ?Final Destination 3? by James Wong,? is written to identify, classify, and analyze the types of anxiety found in the film Final Destination 3. Anxiety is a self effective, unpleasant state, accompanied by a physical sensation that warn the person against impending danger, and there are other feelings of unpleasant character (mental tension, sorrow, grief), and anxiety must have other characteristics beside this quality of unpleasure (Freud, 1996:69). This study aims at identifying, classifying, and analyzing the types of anxiety based on Freud?s theory of anxiety and Snyder?s theory of mise-en-scene and cinematography. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method by Bogdan and Bilken (1982). The data were taken from the movie entitled Final Destination 3. All the collected data were identified, classified, and analyzed by using Freud theory (1996) and Snyder (2011). The result of this research show that there are 31 anxiety reflected in the movie, consisting 16 reality anxiety, 10 neurotic anxiety, and 5 moral anxiety.      Keywords: Anxiety, Reality, Neurotic, Moral, Final Destination 3

ABSTRACT          This research entitled Formula Fantasi Yang Tercermin dalam Film Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire (2005) is written to fulfill the requirement of accomplishing bachelor’s degree in English Department Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University. The focus of this research is Fantasy Formula in the film. The problem of this research is focusing on what are the fantasy formula is and how the reflection of fantasy formula as reflected in the film Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire (2005). The writer used theory from Cawelti (1976) and Snyder (2011) to analyze the fantasy formula. Abstract

ABSTRACTA moral message is a message or lesson conveyed by the author to the reader or listener directly or indirectly with a spesific purpose for example is the moral messages found in the Novel “The Color Purple”, one of the most popular novels written by Alice Walker in 1982. Most of her writings focus and symbolize the struggles of African-Americans, Particulary woman, and their witness against societies that are racist, sexist, and violent. The problems of this research is : what are the moral messages in “The Color Purple” and how are the moral messages portrayed  in this story. This research use deskriptive method, which describes the extrinsic and intrinsic element in a literary work by using pragmatic theory of Abrams in The Mirror of the Lamp who conceive study literary works that focus on the effects of literary works to the reader. Based on this research, the writer analyzed the moral messages in this novel into two parts, that is Positive moral messages which are describe through several literary media involve: Story of Titles, Main Character,A Supporting Character (Shug Avery, Sophia Butlers), Interaction between Characters (Celie and Nettie, Celie and Shug Avery, Mary Agnes and Sofia). Negative Moral Messages that is Sexual Violence, Free Sex, and Same-sex Relationship (Lesbianism). Keywords : The Color Purple, Novel, Moral Messages.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research entitled ?The Analysis of Children Violation in the Novel The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum is written to fulfill the requirement of accomplishing bachelor?s degree in English Department Faculty of Humanities, Sam Ratulangi University. The focus of this study is to identify and classify the types of violence against children reflected in this novel, and the impact experienced by the main character, Meg. The writer used the concept of Child Abuse by Tracy Natasha (2012) to analyze the types, the causes, and the impacts toward victim. The writer also used the theory of Literature by Wellek and Warren to identify the intrinsic approach such as the plot, theme, and character. The result of this research shows four types of violation suffered by the victim, such as emotional, physical, sexual, and neglect based on the plot, the dialogues between the characters, and the actions portrayed in the novel.       Keywords: Child Abuse, Neglect, Violation, Literature

Abstract

                                         ABSTRACTThe title of this research is “Analisis Pemikiran Feminisme Maya Angelou Seperti Tercermin dalam Puisi Still I Rise, Phenomenal Woman, dan Equality” which is aimed to discover the black feminist thought in three poems by Maya Angelou through the kinds of figurative language and imagery. This research uses descriptive method in analyzing the data with two steps. The first step is identifying figurative language and imagery in each poems. The second step is analyzing how black feminist thought which is reflected in Maya Angelou’s poems through figurative language and imagery. This research focuses on the analysis of figurative language, the kinds of imagery, and black feminism in Maya Angelou’s poems. The writer uses the theory from Perrine (1969) to analyze the figurative language and imagery in the poems. The writer also uses the theory of black feminism from Collins (2000) to analyze how black feminist thought reflected in Maya Angelou’s poems through figurative language and imagery. The results of this study show that in her poems, Angelou uses some figurative language and imagery; there are simile, hyperbole, metaphor, personification, irony, symbol, visual imagery, auditory imagery, and kinesthetic imagery.
