Abstract

There are various ways for countries to fulfill their national interests, one of which is through diplomacy, especially in the field of sports. That's what happened at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. This sporting event was used as a way to find peace between South Korea and North Korea. This research seeks to explain how sport can act as an instrument to achieve peace. This research also aims to provide a specific picture of how sport can have a positive impact on countries in conflict, in this context South Korea and North Korea. Sports support for development and peace can be achieved because sport provides a catalyst for non-military diplomacy. Therefore, sport is seen and considered as an important social link in bilateral and multilateral relations. This research is qualitative research with a case study method that uses data collection and analysis through literature study. Data was collected and analyzed using a liberalism perspective with a functionalism approach and the concept of sports diplomacy. The result is that the success of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics has resulted in increased positive interaction between South Korea and North Korea, especially in sports partnerships.

Abstract

This article explains why the Indonesian government did not retaliate the USA according to the DSB WTO authorization, but rather opted to retaliate in the form of signing a mutually agreed solution/MoU in the case of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (FSPTCA). FSPTCA was regarded as a discriminatory act issued by the USA against Indonesia’s clove cigarettes. Indonesia responded by disputing it into the Dispute Settlement Body World Trade Organization (DSB WTO). The USA was found guilty because it violated the WTO principle of non-discrimination and so that it was ordered to comply with the Panel and Appellate Body’s recommendation. Indonesia then requested DSB WTO authorization to carry out retaliation. However, Indonesia did not retaliate according to DSB WTO authorization, but rather opted to sign a mutually agreed solution/MoU (Moratorium of Understanding) to end the FSPTCA trade dispute. Using two-level game theory as its analytical framework, this article argued that Indonesia decision to sign a mutually agreed solution instead of retaliation against the USA was driven by the fact that agreement was considered much more significant and suitable to Indonesia interests.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze comparative economic diplomacy carried out by the PRC and the ROK to DR Congo as an effort to safeguard natural resources (cobalt and copper), competition, and the impact on the SDGs agenda using International Relation’s Liberalism Theory and secondary data. PRC and the ROK need to secure cobalt and copper so that their electric vehicle industry can continue to compete in the world electric vehicle market. DR Congo is the world's largest producer of cobalt and the fourth largest copper producer in the world. DR Congo's GDP is ranked 45th out of 53 African countries. Thus, DR Congo must be able to build the country's infrastructure so that its GDP can increase. PRC and the ROK, thirsty for cobalt and copper for their electric vehicle industries, are moving closer to DR Congo to secure its cobalt and copper. The economic diplomacy carried out by the PRC is a resource for infrastructure while the ROK is based on the principle of mutual benefits. Thus, PRC and the ROK get resources (cobalt and copper) and DR Congo gets the country’s development which is following several SDGs agendas. This paper answers that the economic diplomacy carried out by the PRC and the ROK to DR Congo is an attempt to secure cobalt and copper, creates a competitive environment between PRC and the ROK, and also has an impact on the SDGs in DR Congo.
