Abstract

Speaking subject performed at colleges, especially English language courses, is provided to students to actively develop English speaking skills. However, in fact there are still many students who are less taking advantage of the opportunities given. This has an impact on low student speaking skills. The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of peer assessment of student speech skills in the second semester of Economics Development of STIE Muhammadiyah JambiThe design of this research is a quasi experimental with a posttest-only control group design. The population of the study was the semester II student of Economics Development of STIE Muhammadiyah Jambi year 2018/2019. The population consisted of 75 students. This research sample was class A as the experimental class and B as the control class. Both classes was taken the value of the speaking test which then be compared. The results of this study showed that students taught using peer assessment had better speaking skills than students taught using the teacher assessment.

Abstract

Assessment is a part of everyday life in education, and it takes many forms for many different aims and levels. Measuring the students' progress, competency, and accountability was necessary during the learning process. This study aims to learn about lecturers' opinions and practices about using online assessment during Covid-19 in the context of ELT classrooms. The research method used is qualitative research with a case study approach. It was conducted in the Economics and Business Faculty of the University of Muhammadiyah Jambi. Participatory observation and interviews are used to acquire data. It found some crucial points; online media used by lecturers to assess students and the positive and negative sides of lecturers' online assessment practices. They choose online text messages like Whats App Group and Telegram Group for interactive assessment. For neat task submission, they chose Google Classroom. And for assessing speaking, Tiktok, Instagram and Youtube became alternative platforms. There are benefits and drawbacks that lecturers have encountered, such as effectiveness and efficiency in correcting students' tasks as its benefits, plagiarism, student cheating, and extending submission tasks as its drawbacks.

Abstract

Utilizing smartphone-based mobile learning in the learning process will provide the latest innovative alternatives to the learning process. Today's students tend to experience distractions in their learning process. Not infrequently the learning system that applies in a school makes students bored and not enthusiastic about learning. This could have been because the school did not make any changes in the existing education system. Where the effect of the incident will cause students to feel bored and bored in the learning process. In this era of the mobile revolution, it will create various advances in the field of technology that can be used to support the learning process. The purpose of this research is to find out the potential utilization of smartphones as a form of mobile learning revolution in the learning process. Through research on the Mobile Learning Revolution: Utilizing the Potential of Smartphones in the Learning Process, researchers hope that by utilizing the potential of smartphones as a manifestation of the mobile learning revolution in the learning process, it can facilitate the learning process itself. The method used in this research is a quantitative method. The researcher conducted a survey using the Google form which consisted of 15 statements related to the research title. Researchers found that the use of the potential of smartphones in the era of the mobile learning revolution had a major impact on the learning process. The existence of a smartphone in the learning process greatly facilitates the implementation of the teaching and learning process in schools. The limitations of this study are that researchers only conduct research in schools and researchers do not conduct research directly at schools but share survey links on Google forms containing statements about the Mobile Learning Revolution: Utilizing the Potential of Smartphones in the Learning Process.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ attitudes and perceptions toward learning English at SMP Islam Al-Falah Kota Jambi. Attitude plays a crucial role in language acquisition, influencing students' engagement, motivation, and overall learning outcomes. The study examines three key aspects of students’ attitudes: behavioral, cognitive, and affective. Using a qualitative research approach with Yin’s case study method, data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with second-grade students. Findings reveal that students generally hold a positive cognitive attitude toward learning English, recognizing its importance for future careers and global communication. Behaviorally, students demonstrate responsibility in completing tasks but show varying levels of motivation for independent learning. The affective aspect highlights enthusiasm for English learning but also identifies challenges related to speaking confidence and anxiety. The study suggests that fostering a supportive learning environment, integrating interactive methods, and encouraging speaking practice can enhance students’ attitudes and learning outcomes. This study elucidates the subtle aspects related to students' attitudes, so enhancing English language education through the provision of contextually pertinent teaching methodologies and fostering the advancement of more effective learner-centered strategies. Future research should explore motivational factors, teaching strategies, and the impact of digital resources on language learning.
