Abstract

This article is the result of the study of literature on the scripture of the Upanisad, one of the most important in the Hindu scriptures. Upanisad becomes an integral part of the Vedas, even being sakha to describe the contents of Catur Veda Samhita. This position reinforces the belief of Hindus that the Upanisad is Vedanta, which on further development inspires other scriptures, especially Darsana, and also Bhagawadgita. The contents of the principal Upanisads primarily discuss the concept of God (Brahman), the human and the atman, the beginning and end of the universe, death, karma and reincarnation, and also dreams. But in general, the main content of Upanisad reflects about the sraddha, and Hindu philosophy. Actually, the content of the Upanisad is very heavy, but this scripture is relatively easy to read because it is served with a dialogue style and the narrative is rich in analogies. In addition Upanisad literally translated as “to sit down near the teacher”, as well as imagination on indepth dialogue between teacher and student, although the main content of the Upanisad has exceeded its basic meaning.

Abstract

Kampung Bugis is a small community of Bugis people who occupy a special land in the customary village of Serangan. The oral narrative stated that the village was a gift from the King of Pamecutan Badung in regard for their merits in assisting the kingdom during the war. They were eventually known as hard workers, courageous, and immigrants like the Bugis people in general. They also bring those sets of attitude to overseas, one of them in the customary village of Serangan, Denpasar. In addition to being able to adapt very well, they were also capable of maintaining a religious life in harmony with the society of Serangan where the major religion was Hindu. In 2007, the village of Kampung Bugis experienced a tragedy of eviction that eliminated half of the village. During the evictions they also survived by continuing the tradition and caring for the heritage of their noble cultural treasures through the old As Syuhada mosque, the old Qur’an book, the historical old tomb, and Bugis typical stage house. This writing is to highlight the cultural treasures and tradition that the people of Bugis strive for despite of many unfortunate events they experience including the recent evictions.

Abstract

This research is based on the current situation after many Aluk Todolo believers were integrated with Hinduism. Over time, this integration experienced many obstacles and challenges. The new name resulting from integration, namely Hindu Alukta, does not eliminate the stigma and stereotypes associated with local religion and adherents of animism. To examine the future challenges that they face after integrating with Hinduism, this research uses qualitative methods with an in-depth interview technique with key informants, direct observation at the location, and the study of documents from various existing sources. Employing the Practice Theory framework from Bourdieu, this study found that the challenge that Hindu Alukta adherents faced is largely capital (which sourced from structural supports). This is because structurally, the government, in this case the Ministry of Religious Affairs, especially the Directorate General of Hindu Community Guidance, has not been able to serve and guide them optimally. The Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Province of South Sulawesi, especially the Hindu Community Advisors are not capable enough to provide post-integration services and guidance. Culturally, those are rooted from the local belief of Aluk Todolo, experienced struggles as adherents of the official religion (Hinduism).

Abstract

This study aimed to highlight the harmonious coexistence among different ethnic and religious groups. The study was conducted in Badau, a sub-district in West Kalimantan, inhabited by the indigenous Dayak Iban ethnic group and migrants from various ethnic and religious backgrounds. The primary motivation for examining the socio-cultural and religious life in Badau stems from the region's challenges, including limited religious guidance and services, the establishment of places of worship, the roles of traditional and religious leaders, and interfaith relationships. Using a qualitative approach with observation, interviews, and document analysis, the research revealed several key findings. Firstly, customary rules play a significant role in the lives of the Dayak Iban, serving as a guiding principle. They adhere to these rules strictly but with flexibility. Secondly, community leaders and social institutions are instrumental in resolving social issues. The rumah panjang and balai adat are two key mechanisms for conflict resolution. The study recommends conducting anthropological and historical research to trace the origins of the Dayak Iban tribe and explore religious encounters in the region. It also suggests that local governments in border areas emulate Badau’s community resilience, where the Cross-Border Post (PLBN) serves as a living symbol of unity, promoting nationalism and harmony among diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious groups.
