Abstract

This community service aimed to assist farmers in improving their knowledge and quality of feed by producing fermented complete feed (FCF). The community service occurred from June to November 2019 in the Karya Manunggal livestock group in Donokerto, Turi, Sleman. The activities included observing the initial conditions of the group, providing counseling, conducting FCF production training, evaluating the products, and utilizing the trained products for the livestock. The results of the activities indicated an increase in farmers' knowledge about manufacturing concentrate and feed supplements, feed preservation technology, and FCF, each by 80%, 73%, and 95%, respectively. Farmers successfully produced FCF with good quality, as indicated by the acidic pH of 4.31. The palatability of FCF was also excellent for livestock. The average daily gain in sheep with FCF supplementation was 0.156 grams/head/day, while the farmers' feed supplementation was 0.113 grams/head/day. The community service activities in the Karya Manunggal livestock group conclude the improvement of farmers' knowledge and skills in terms of livestock nutritional needs, balanced feed formulation, and the utilization of fermentation technology in feed production. The success of these activities is also evident in the increased effectiveness of feed and cost efficiency following the implementation of FCF.

Abstract

The body of literature on environmental studies suggest that sustainability in agricultural sector is not only a matter of technical agricultural management, but also the ideas, norms, or values that farmers hold, including those from religion. This cannot hold true more than the Indonesia context of religious society. Indonesia is an agricultural country where most of the population’s livelihood is agriculture, as demonstrated by the fact that 37.5% of the total land area is used for farming. Through an empirical study in Blora, Central Java, this article aims to examine and identify the norms, practices, and motivations of faith-based organic farming by Nahdlatul Ulama Agriculture Development Institute (LPPNU) Blora in promoting environmental and food sustainability. This study is based on a qualitative study using the theories of lived religion and religious creativity. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 13 individuals, including spiritual leaders, NU administrators, and NU organic farmers, and participant observation for three months. This article has two main findings. First, the religious norms and practices developed by LPPNU in organic farming in Blora express the principles of worship, stewardship of the earth, compassion for nature, self-reliance, and sustainability by making nutrient-rich organic matter fertilizer. Secondly, the primary motivations for farmers to switch to organic are personal health, soil health, and religiosity. Other motivations are influenced by institutional authority and religious reasons.

Abstract

Agricultural extension services that are currently following the decentralization era require a participatory extension approach in line the needs of farmers in each region. This mixed-method study looked at the condition of agricultural extension governance and services at local level which characterized by agricultural resource based on economic development, namely Purworejo Regency, Central Java Province, in responding to problems in the agricultural sector and extension institutions. The research results show that the governance of extension services in Purworejo Regency faces the issue of lack of capacity building o extension agents with excessive workload and minimal staff. In contrast, extension agents have a pile of tasks that must be done individually, without inadequate support on facilities and sufficient budget to support extension services to farmers. The impact of climate change, such as an increase in pests and plant diseases and water crisis, have become major problems in the agricultural sector. This study suggests a policy and program to build extension agents' capacity and a more organized governance of extension institutions.
