Abstract

Culture resistance in modern era like nowadays is an important thing. In urban communities, culture is increasingly biased with each other so that it is no longer the main thing in everyday life. Cio Tao customary marriage until now still lives in the Benteng Chinese community in Tangerang and the Chinese community in general in Indonesia but is now shifting because of the times and things. This study aims to describe changes in social behavior of the Chinese Benteng community in the implementation of traditional marriage. The method used in this study is Qualitative with an Ethnographic approach. Research location is in Mekarsari Village, Neglasari District, Tangerang City, Banten Province, Indonesia. The informants in this study amounted to eight people consisting of the Benteng Chinese community and related parties involved in it. Data collection techniques in this study are interviews and observations. Data validity uses source validity and methods with Spradley phased forward model analysis techniques. The results showed that changes in social behavior of the Chinese Benteng community in organizing Cio Tao marriages were influenced by several factors including conversion of religion, economic conditions that were less strong and the influence of modernization. These changes are the result of responses to the stimuli they face.

Abstract

Non-mainstream religious movements are a characteristic feature of island regions isolated by the sea. This movement first existed as a societal need at that time. This article attempts to answer the question of how a community of ex-nonmainstream religious movements carries out cultural politics to survive amid the increasingly dominant mainstream religion. This study is based on interview data and observations conducted on several informants. Movement history manuscripts are also a secondary data source in this research. Objectively, it was found that the ex-Muhdi Akbar community carried out cultural politics in three forms. First, they reoriented their movement from focusing on religion and politics to social and cultural ones. Second, open membership regulations and freedom in choosing an official religion means they have a higher emotional bond. Third, accommodation in the government strengthens their position as religious people and does not deviate so that the problems they previously experienced can be minimized. This form of cultural politics is a formula for the success of a non-mainstream religious movement.

Abstract

In contrast to Indonesia's borders with Malaysia and Papua New Guinea, the border with Timor Leste has complexities. One line divides the island from north to south, and another includes a small enclave area in the northwest of Timor Island, which is a legacy of colonial occupation by the Dutch to the west of the island and by the Portuguese to the east. After Timor Leste's independence, people on the border had to change how they interacted in the social, political and economic spheres. This article, written using qualitative methods, attempts to describe the dynamic of society on the border of two countries. The research results show that even though politically, Timor Leste and Indonesia are separated into two countries, they are very closely related to each other from a socio-cultural aspect. The people on the border have kinship relations in the two countries and are socially and culturally connected even though they are politically separated as citizens. There are at least three activities involving citizens of two countries. The first is a traditional ritual in their house, which allows citizens of two countries to cross each other to return to their homeland. Second, economic transactions can be carried out legally or illegally. Third, they often do unofficial international sports representing villages directly adjacent to national borders.
