Abstract

This research investigates the dynamics of turn-taking within a talk show context, specifically focusing on the "Beres-Beres Kursi Menkes" episode of Indonesia's Mata Najwa. Utilizing a qualitative content analysis methodology involving recording and note-taking, the study examines turn-taking behaviors based on Stenström's (1994) theoretical framework. The analysis reveals three primary strategies: Taking the Floor, Holding the Floor, and Yielding the Floor. The conversation unfolds through bidirectional interactions, characterized by initial greetings, instances of overlapping speech, intermittent interruptions, and a concluding prompt. The study underscores the significance of mastering the Taking the Floor strategy, which involves seizing speaking opportunities, initiating or responding to turns, and rectifying errors. Proficiency in this aspect facilitates meaningful dialogues and ensures a coherent exchange of ideas within the context of talk shows.

Abstract

Teaching is an activity involving semiotic resources beyond verbal language. Therefore, more studies investigating what semiotic resources are employed and how they are utilized within EFL classroom settings are needed. This study sought to explore the types of semiotic resources employed by two EFL teachers in Indonesia and the roles of these semiotic resources in teaching activities. Through a qualitative case study, two EFL teachers in Bandung and Medan, Indonesia, were purposively selected. Data collection was through a semi-structured interview and document analysis. A six-phase of thematic analysis was employed to analyze the interview results, while a three-step of skimming, reading, and interpretation was used to analyze the documents. This study found that spoken language, pictures, videos, proxemics, gestures, head movements, gaze, and music were the semiotic resources used by both teachers in their teaching. The findings also demonstrated that these semiotic resources were used in the opening, delivering, and closing of the class, explaining learning content, performing interactions with students, checking the students' progress, managing classroom order, showing appreciation, and conducting evaluations. This study implies the crucial roles of all stakeholders in education to help EFL teachers in multimodal knowledge and practical strategy to create better teaching outcomes.

Abstract

This study explores how the Choral Response method affects the development of English speaking skills of students at MTs Pancasila in Bengkulu City. Using a numerical method with a quasi-experimental design, the study involved two separate groups: an experimental group taught with the Choral Response method, and a control group taught using a general teaching approach. Information was collected through initial and final evaluations that assessed five specific aspects of speaking proficiency: pronunciation, fluency, grammatical accuracy, word usage, and comprehension. The results showed that both groups of students improved in their speaking skills, but the experimental group showed significantly greater improvement overall. The experimental group's mean score increased from 60.55 to 82.27, while the control group's mean score increased from 58.00 to 75.18. An isolated sample t-test showed a significant difference between the groups (p = 0.017 < 0.05), which proved the positive influence of the Choral Response method on students' speaking skills. In conclusion, the Choral Response technique effectively enhances students’ pronunciation, fluency, and confidence in speaking English. It is therefore recommended as an interactive and participatory teaching strategy for developing speaking skills at the junior high school student.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the correlation between language anxiety and communication experiences among users of the Free4Talk platform in a digital language learning context. A quantitative correlational approach was utilized, involving 30 people chosen through purposive selection. Data was collected using two Likert-scale surveys. Upon examination of the instruments, 22 items were determined to be genuine and utilized in the study. Due to the data’s failure to satisfy the normalcy condition, Spearman’s rho was employed to examine the relationship between the variables. The findings indicated a negligible negative connection between linguistic anxiety and communication experience (r = –0.104). This indicates that elevated anxiety was marginally correlated with reduced communication experiences; however, this relationship was not statistically significant (p = 0.584). The findings suggest that language anxiety does not substantially affect users’ conversational experiences in peer-to-peer digital language learning settings, especially on the Free4Talk platform. Consequently, it may be deduced that elements beyond language anxiety may significantly influence learners’ communicative results in online language learning contexts. This study contributes to the limited quantitative research on language anxiety in peer-to-peer digital language learning platforms by offering empirical evidence.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) on the reading achievement of eighth-grade students at SMPN 20 Bengkulu City. The PjBL model was chosen because it is believed to be able to increase students' involvement, creativity, and critical thinking skills through structured and contextual project activities. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design. Data analysis was carried out through normality tests, homogeneity tests, paired sample t-tests, and independent sample t-tests using SPSS. The results showed that both the experimental and control groups experienced an increase in reading scores, but the increase in the experimental group was much more significant. The average pre-test score of the experimental group was 65.66 and increased to 78.48 in the post-test, while the control group increased from 61.10 to 73.93. The t-test showed a significance value of 0.007 (p < 0.05), so H₀ was rejected and H₁ was accepted. Thus, this study concludes that Project-Based Learning has a significant impact on improving students' reading skills, thus PBL can be recommended as an effective learning model for improving students' literacy competencies at the junior high school level.
