Abstract

The research is aimed at describing the types of translation errors made by the English Literature Students in translating news text from English into Indonesian. The present study employed a descriptive qualitative study. The research subject was the sixth-semester students of the English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Economics, Law, and Humanities, Universitas Ngudi Waluyo who have taken a Translation Course. The news text was taken from the Jakarta Post and it consists of 22 paragraphs. The news texts were then translated into Bahasa Indonesia and they become the target texts as the sources of data to investigate the students’ translation errors. They were then classified into five types of errors according to Vilar et al. (2006, 698). The research results revealed that there were 108 translation errors in the form of incorrect words (60,2%), punctuation (18.5%), missing words (12,03%), and word order (0,9%). It can be concluded that the most frequent errors made by the students are incorrect words, punctuation, and missing words.

Abstract

The 2020 live-action adaptation of Mulan offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic Disney animated film, presenting a nuanced portrayal of gender roles and feminist values. This analysis examines the film through the lens of liberal feminism, focusing on how the narrative and character development align with the principles of individual rights and gender equality. The film depicts Mulan as a strong, independent woman who challenges traditional gender roles and societal expectations. Key scenes, such as Mulan's decision to disguise herself as a man and her subsequent success in traditionally male-dominated roles, highlight the film's alignment with liberal feminist values. The analysis also considers the role of supporting characters, like the witch Xian Lang, and the depiction of patriarchal authority through figures like the Emperor. Despite its progressive elements, the film faces criticism for cultural inaccuracies and the reinforcement of certain stereotypes. Suggestions for future adaptations include enhancing cultural accuracy, exploring a broader range of feminist themes, and expanding representation across genres. By addressing these limitations, future films can further advance discussions on gender equality and representation in popular media .

Abstract

This study examines the personality traits of key characters in the biographical film Milk (2008) through the lens of the Big Five personality theory, which includes Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. The research focuses on five central figures—Harvey Milk, Dan White, Anne Kronenberg, Scott Smith, and Mayor George Moscone—to explore how their behaviors, interpersonal interactions, and decision-making reflect distinct personality dimensions. Data were collected through qualitative analysis of character actions, dialogue, and pivotal scenes, followed by categorization according to Big Five traits. The findings reveal significant contrasts among the characters: Harvey Milk demonstrates high openness, conscientiousness, and extraversion, coupled with moderate neuroticism; Dan White exhibits low openness and agreeableness but high neuroticism, explaining his impulsive and destructive behavior; Anne Kronenberg exemplifies organizational competence and emotional stability; Scott Smith shows introversion and moderate neuroticism reflecting personal conflict; and Mayor Moscone illustrates emotional steadiness and cooperative leadership. This study contributes to the understanding of character psychology in biographical cinema, highlighting how personality traits influence both individual behavior and relational dynamics within socio-political contexts. Implications for film studies, psychology, and leadership research are discussed.
