Abstract

Investigating readability of texts for use in teaching reading becomes crucial as teachers should adjust the readability of the texts to suit the level of students’ reading skill. If the students learn the inappropriate level of readability of reading texts, it might decrease the success of teaching reading or even the learning of reading might be absent. This paper is aimed at investigating how to analyze readability of the texts in the perspective of discourse analysis; thus, English teachers can choose and apply the appropriate texts as the teaching materials for their students. The objects of this study are three different texts about butterflies taken from three different sources. The study employed descriptive qualitative with concerning the all aspects of the texts which contribute to the readabilities of the texts using Gerot and Wignell (1995) and Eggins’ (2004) theories. Based on the result, there are three central elements of the texts which substantially contribute to the texts’ readabilities such as technical terms, noun phrases, and finiteness. Finally, it is suggested that the teachers analyze the three elements of texts as the consideration in adjusting the texts’ level of readabilities with the students’ level of reading skills.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the representation of Indonesian women in contemporary travel writings. The rise of globalization has challenged the domination of discourses that tend to place Indonesian women in the subordinate position. However, the challenge does not warrant a symmetrical relation between genders, as it sometimes blurs the relation as a result of clashes between discourses. This study, then, provides an overview of how discourses have shaped the representation of Indonesian women by revealing images that appear explicitly and implicitly in travel stories. Using the Foucauldian discourse analysis approach allowed the writers to exclude subjects, objects, and meanings to discover a comprehensive web of image construction. This research found that Indonesian women’s representation is stuck in an ambiguous position as it strives to be an independent individual subject.

This study is aimed at investigating the greeting strategies employed by Javanese people in Mangunsari village, Semarang, Indonesia. The notion of greeting strategies has not got quite considerable attention by Pragmatic researcher since there are only few studies concerning them. As utterances and verbal communication should be interpreted based on the socio-cultural background, Javanese cannot be separated from the concept of Javanese culture like friendliness. As a result, the verbal communication they uttered might have more meaning than the said. Therefore, this study also attempts to trace the implicature they intent. This paper examines how greeting strategies are manifested and conveyed within the major framework of the Javanese culture. This study is about socio-cultural pragmatics in which utterances are discussed in relation to their situation and cultural background which support them. The data are in the form of dialogue between Javanese which does not show any different social status among the interlocutors. The data are aimed at generating the strategies used by Javanese (in Mangunsari village, Semarang, Indonesia) to maintain harmony among the members. Finally, the data are examined from general theory of implicature and the Javanese culture concept (friendliness). This study provides important findings showing that Javanese tend to greet others by employing a particular way which differ from common ways of greeting.
