Abstract

Eliciting students’ mental model will enable teachers to monitor their students’ learning and understanding students’ mental model is a growing area of scientific inquiry in chemistry education. Diagnostics test can help teachers to understand the state of students’ understanding about certain topics and therefore, we developed a diagnostics test for eliciting students’ mental model about solubility equilibria. The developed diagnostics test was specifically designed to elicit mental model and rooted in Predict-Observe-Explain scheme, hence we called it as DTM-POE. After a series of DTM-POE trials, implementation results suggested that the developed DTM-POE can elicit students’ mental model about solubility equilibria. Several types of students’ mental models were found and DTM-POE sensitivity to elicit these mental models is discussed.

Abstract

Tes diagnostik POE-Reaksi Kimia terdiri atas 4 soal.

Abstract

Low student learning outcomes are a significant issue in high school colloid chemistry learning. Correspondingly, this research aimed to determine the effectiveness of scientific literacy-based student worksheets (LKPD) in colloid chemistry learning. A quasi-experimental approach, specifically the pretest-posttest control group design, was employed in this study. The experimental class, XI IPA-2, consisted of 15 students, while the control class, XI IPA-1, also included 15 students, with total sampling techniques used to select the sample. Test instruments were developed to collect student learning outcome data through pretest and posttest techniques. The effectiveness of student worksheets was analyzed using the N-gain test, independent sample t-test, and effect size tests. The N-gain results exhibited an average score of 0.7319, which was a high category for the experimental class, while the control class obtained a score of 0.5308, which was categorized as moderate. The independent sample t-test results indicated a 2-taliled significance score of 0.002 ( 0.05), demonstrating a significant difference between the learning outcomes of the experimental and control classes. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that scientific literacy-based student worksheets effectively improved student learning outcomes in colloid chemistry learning at the senior high school level.

Abstract

In dealing with the Merdeka Curriculum revisions, teachers must not only be capable and competent in developing instructional modules that match the needs of students. Teachers must also be able to apply them effectively during the learning process. This offers a big difficulty to teachers. This study intends to investigate the preparation of chemistry teachers and the challenges they confront when adopting teaching modules based on the Merdeka Curriculum. In this instance, numerous attempts can be taken to improve chemistry teachers' readiness to confront the issues they face. This form of research is descriptive and takes a qualitative approach. The data collecting subjects are three chemistry teachers from a senior high school in Banda Aceh City. The research data was obtained using semi-structured interviews. The data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman method. According to the study's findings, chemistry teachers are unprepared to adopt Merdeka Curriculum-based teaching modules. Teachers recognize the Merdeka Curriculum's essential concepts but lack confidence in constructing teaching modules on their own. Chemistry teachers face challenges in implementing teaching modules based on the Merdeka Curriculum, including a lack of training provided by schools to enhance teachers' understanding and skills regarding the structure and implementation of the independent curriculum in the chemistry learning process. To overcome this issue, schools could organize Merdeka Curriculum training or workshops to help teachers enhance their skills. Furthermore, the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum demands efforts for coordination among teachers, school principals, and the school's educational office.

Abstract

Practicum as an important part of the chemistry learning process, trains and develops students' scientific process skills in testing chemical theories. The low science process skills cause students to struggle with understanding work procedures, processing data, and concluding experimental results. This study aims to determine the effect of reaction rate practicum on students' science process skills. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design method. The research sample involved 35 students from class XI-MIPA 1 in the experimental class and 35 students from class XI-MIPA 3 in the control class at MAN 3 Aceh Barat Daya. Research data were collected using observation sheets to measure science process skills and multiple-choice tests to measure the impact of practicum on science process skills. The research results show that the science process skills of students in the experimental class are better compared to the control class. Students demonstrated very good observation and good skills in classifying, asking questions, and hypothesizing. However, they have sufficient skills in interpreting and communicating. The results of the hypothesis test obtained a t-value of 2.67 > t-table 1.65 at a significance level of 0.05, indicating that the implementation of practicum significantly affects students' science process skills in reaction rate learning. An effect size score of 0.18 indicates that practical-based reaction rate learning has a significant impact on students' science process skills. It is concluded that the reaction rate practicum influences the development of students' science process skills at MAN 3 Aceh Barat Daya.
