Abstract

The study of Indonesian Islamic philanthropy has so far been carried out by scholars with organizations and managerial governance as the locus. The existing studies do not provide enough articulation space for the dynamics of traditional philanthropy. This draws the author's attention to discursively look at the portrait of Islamic philanthropy in Indonesia by placing traditional and modern models more proportionally. The results are, first, Islamic philanthropy is based on religious doctrine. Second, modern and traditional philanthropy have different articulations. Modern philanthropy inevitably tries to adopt neoliberal values by referring to managerialistic, formalized governance for the humanitarian agenda. Meanwhile, traditional philanthropy is limited, interpersonal, based on the ethics of immediacy, and adheres to the justification of Godliness as the main thing, as in the case of Muludan. Third, the traditional and modern models have shown their respective achievements and challenges. Indonesian Islamic philanthropy tells the story of a philanthropic movement that is not singular, reflecting the contestation between Islamic teachings and neoliberal values.

Abstract

This study examines the challenges faced by vocational high school graduates in their transition to employment and their strategies for overcoming these challenges. Vocational high school is advocated as a provider of skilled and job-ready graduates to solve unemployment problems. However, employment statistics show that vocational high school graduates account for the largest share of unemployment in Indonesia. This study aims to improve our understanding of this anomaly. The data in this paper were collected through in-depth interviews with vocational high school graduates in Yogyakarta, with a balanced representation of gender, geographic location, and specialization. We found that most graduates successfully obtained employment immediately after graduation. However, most of the employment is of low quality, indicating vulnerability in the transition. Their challenges emerge at different stages: before, during and after their schooling. This study also highlights the institutional role of vocational high schools in facilitating the school-to-work transition. Thus, this study contributes to the current discourse on youth transition by highlighting the intersectionality of factors influencing the transition of vocational high school graduates to the labor market and by pointing to the central role of the school in supporting their transition process.

Abstract

This study investigates the trends of workcation in Indonesia, and the motivations and expectations of workcationers. Workcation is a new way of working that has gained momentum globally, including in Indonesia, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. However, research on the workcation trend involving Indonesian workers is limited, if not non-existent. Thus, this study aims to identify the profiles of those who adopt this work style, their motivation, preferences, and experiences. The data in this paper were drawn from an online survey and interviews with workcationers. We use a mixed method and adopt the New Ways of Working (NWW) approach to the sociology of work to provide new insights into the emerging workcation trend in the digital age. The findings show that Indonesian workers who adopt this work style are mostly millennials employed in the formal sectors and earn above the regional minimum wage. They believe that workcation can improve well-being and productivity. However, this trend has drawbacks for workers, such as alienation due to a low sense of belonging, depression, and work-life imbalance. Based on these findings, we propose some relevant social policy responses.
