Abstract

Air pollution is a global problem faced by most large cities worldwide. Air has a very important role in the lives of humans and other living creatures. Air is a natural resource whose sustainability must be protected into the future. Therefore, efforts are needed to contain CO levels in the air using Sansevieria plants. Therefore, this research aims to obtain optimal levels of CO-absorbing compounds in Sansevieria sp. as carbon monoxide gas reducers. This type of research uses experimental methods (quasi-experimental). Quantitative data collection was carried out based on the results of experiments in the field. Field experiments with a Complete Random Design (Complete Random Design) with the conditions of each experiment assumed to be homogeneous. The research results show this plant contains Aliphatic Hydrocarbons and Primary Aliphatic Alcohols compounds. Keywords: air pollution, CO gas, sansevieria

Abstract

This study aims to determine the potential of water clover (M. crenata), curcuma (C. xanthorriza), and the combination of both extracts in order to improve the sperm quality of mice after MSG administration. This study used 35 Balb/C male mice (3 months old, 25-30 grams body weight (BW)). The animals randomly divided into 7 treatment groups, namely K0 (the group given MSG 4 mg/gBW), K1 (the group given MSG 4 mg/gBW and M. crenata 0.09 mg/gBW), K3 (the group given MSG 4 mg/gBW and C. xanthorriza 0.2 mg/gBW), K4 (the group that was given MSG 4 mg/gBW and a combination of M. crenata extract 0.045 mg/gBW and C. xanthorriza 0.1 mg/gBW), K5 (the group given M. crenata 0.09 mg/gBW), and K6 (the group given C. xanthorriza 0.2 mg/gBW). MSG and all extracts are given orally and daily for 30 days. The observed parameters were sperm’s motility, viability, and concentration. The data are analyzed using SPSS for windows with a One-way ANOVA test (p≤0.05) and Tukey HSD test. The administration of water clover, curcuma, and the combination of both extracts can significantly improve the sperm quality in mice exposed by MSG. The administration of single and combination extract can improve the motility, viability, and concentration of the sperm in treatment groups with the extract. In conclusion, the combination of water clover and curcuma ethanol extract significantly improved sperm quality.

Abstract

Cyprinus carpio is a freshwater species with high reproduction and adaptability. These factors make C. carpio being the freshwater fish that majority distributed and has high commercial value in some countries, including Indonesia. The maturation phase of male and female fish gonads does not occur simultaneously. Thus, sperm preservation could be an alternative technique to maintain the breeding process throughout the year. This research aims to determine the effect of storage time on C. carpio sperm quality strain Punten in NaCl solution-coconut water (Cocos nucifera L.). This study used common carp (C. carpio) 8 months of age with 500 g.bw-1. The C. carpio semen sample was divided into four treatment groups (0, 3, 6, and 9-hour storage time). The extender used in this research was composed of coconut water (C. nucifera L.) and NaCl solution with a ratio of 70% : 30%. The samples were stored in a refrigerator at 5oC. Fresh sperm sample was analyzed macroscopically using various parameters, such as pH, volume, color, and consistency. Meanwhile, the post-preserved sperm quality sample was analyzed microscopically (motility, viability, concentration, and abnormality). Furthermore, we also obtained the fertilization rate and hatching rate. The result showed that storage time affects the reduction of C. carpio sperm quality significantly (p<0.05). The highest sperm viability was obtained in NaCl solution-Cocos nucifera with a 3-hour storage time (78.33%±5.49). Our study found that the storage time significantly affected the sperm quality of C. carpio that was given with C. nucifera extender. Adding C. nucifera with 3,6,9 hour storage time also increases the fertilization and hatching rate compared with the group without C. nucifera. It can be shown that the addition of C. nucifera as a natural extender has the essential role of maintaining C. carpio sperm quality after a short storage period.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of MSG treatment for short and long term on the semen quality of adult male rats. Twelve male adult Wistar rats with 200-300g of body weight (BW) and 3-4 month of age were used in this study. The animals were divided randomly into 3 groups. M0 was used as a control, M1 and M2 were given with MSG 4mg/gBW for 15 and 45 days respectively. The experimental animals were sacrificed on the days 16th (to M1 group) and 46th (to M0 and M2 groups). The epididymis was isolated and semen quality (motility, viability, concentration, and abnormality of sperm) was evaluated. The results showed motility and concentration of M1 and M2 were not significantly decreased compared to M0. MSG treatment also significantly reduced viability and increased abnormality of sperm. Analysis of sperm abnormality character shows that the use of long-term MSG caused a formation of the primary abnormality (round and double head sperm) and increased the secondary abnormality (bent neck, curve tail, coiled tail, headless, and tailless) compared to control. Conclusion, semen quality decreases with consumed MSG for the long term. For this reason, reconsidering the use of MSG as an enhancer for the teste of food is very important. Keywords: epididymis, Monosodium L-Glutamate, semen quality.

Abstract

The prevalence of alcohol consumption is high among adult males during the reproductive period. The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of chronic administration ethanol on the quality of sperm in the rats. Twelve healthy Wistar male albino rats were randomly divided into 2 groups to represent the 2 phase duration. The first phase lasted 21 days and the second phase lasted 49 days. In each phase, the animals were separated into subgroups: A and B. Subgroup A represented control that received distilled water while subgroup B represented animals that received 7 mL.kgBW-1 of 30% ethanol per day, thrice a week. The data were analyzed using ANOVA (P<0.05). There is no significant difference in sperm concentration and viability. However, there is a significant difference in the motility of spermatozoa between the control group and ethanol-treated group. Thus, the study indicates that ethanol administration may disturb the sperm motility and have no clear effect on its concentration and viability. Keywords: alcohol consumption, reproductive function, sperm quality.
